For a substantial free desktop editor, start with DaVinci Resolve; for simpler browser or Windows edits, consider Clipchamp. Their documented free-export ceilings differ: Resolve supports virtually all 8-bit formats up to 60 fps and Ultra HD (3840 × 2160), while Clipchamp’s free personal plan exports at up to 1080p. The other 13 names below are candidates, not verified recommendations: current official details for their free limits are not established here.
Which free editor fits your workflow?
| Editor | Best-supported fit | What is established about the free option | Likely reason to upgrade or switch |
|---|---|---|---|
| DaVinci Resolve 21 | Desktop post-production, including editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, and audio post. | Blackmagic Design lists Mac, Windows, and Linux support. Its free version supports virtually all 8-bit formats up to 60 fps and UHD 3840 × 2160. | Resolve Studio adds features including AI tools, extra effects, noise reduction, and text-based editing. Its stated support for 10-bit video up to 120 fps and resolutions beyond 4K is a Studio feature, not a free-version capability. |
| Clipchamp (personal) | Straightforward edits using your own footage or the free stock collection, in a browser or on Windows. | Microsoft documents free personal editing and exports up to 1080p. It works in Edge or Chrome on desktop and laptop systems including Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chromebook, and is built into Windows 11. | Some premium features, including 4K export, are available to eligible Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers. A separate paid tier is also available. |
These are different kinds of “free.” Resolve is a free software edition with a paid Studio upgrade; Clipchamp offers a free personal tier whose documented export ceiling is 1080p. Your existing Microsoft 365 subscription may change which Clipchamp features are available, but it is not required for the documented basic free editing and export.

What the other 13 names do—and do not—tell you
A secondary roundup names CapCut, Kdenlive, Shotcut, OpenShot, iMovie, VSDC, Lightworks, Blender, Avidemux, LosslessCut, VN, Flowblade, and Canva alongside Resolve and Clipchamp. That list alone does not establish whether each is currently available as a continuing free product, which devices it supports, or what its export, watermark, account, media, or feature restrictions are. Those details are not stated in the roundup information available for this comparison, so they are not presented as verified limits or recommendations.

Before choosing one of these, check its official product or project documentation for the current supported platforms, maximum export resolution and frame rate, watermark rules, account requirements, and whether assets or editing tools are paid-only. Do not treat a missing limit in a roundup as proof that no limit exists.

Do not confuse a free plan with a free trial
Adobe Premiere is a trial-based alternative, not a continuing free plan. Adobe’s US plans page describes a seven-day full-version trial that converts to paid membership unless cancelled. Its US individual plan price and subscription terms can change and do not apply globally; Premiere is offered by subscription, not as an outright purchase. Include Premiere only if you are willing to evaluate it during the trial and manage cancellation before conversion.

- Need exports above 1080p without moving into paid access? Clipchamp’s documented free personal ceiling is 1080p, so it does not meet that requirement. Resolve’s free version reaches UHD for supported formats and frame rates.
- Need 10-bit footage, 120-fps support, or work beyond 4K? Those capabilities are listed for Resolve Studio, not the free edition. Check the Studio feature list against your footage before committing to that workflow.
- Want a quick edit rather than a post-production suite? Clipchamp is positioned for straightforward personal edits and runs in supported desktop browsers as well as Windows 11. Verify the exact premium features attached to your Microsoft 365 subscription if you already have one.
- Considering another editor from the candidate list? Confirm its current free terms on the maker’s official documentation before importing a project or building a workflow around it.
Blackmagic also sells the optional DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor, an editing keyboard with a search dial and dedicated controls. It is an accessory, not a requirement for using Resolve. Resolve documentation supports directly attached drives as well as NAS/SAN storage; no particular capacity or drive model is established here.
