Free-to-play describes a game’s access model; a free-game promotion describes a temporary offer. A free-to-play Xbox game is offered without an upfront purchase under that model, while an event such as Free Play Days lets eligible players try selected games for a limited window. The event’s dates, eligibility and post-event access depend on its terms.
What free-to-play means on Xbox
A free-to-play game is offered as a free-to-play title, rather than being a normally paid game opened temporarily for an event. Xbox maintains a free-to-play games catalogue; its titles and related in-game benefits can change. “Free-to-play” does not mean every feature, item or purchase inside a game is free.

For supported free-to-play games on Xbox console, online multiplayer is available without a paid subscription, according to Xbox’s April 2021 announcement. Xbox said at the time that this covered a library of more than 50 games. That is a historical figure, not a current catalogue count.
What a free game promotion means
A promotion temporarily opens selected games to eligible players. Xbox’s Free Play Days page describes opportunities for qualifying Game Pass members to try selected games. But eligibility is event-specific: an announcement may include games open to all Xbox members, so check the event notice and the relevant game listing rather than assuming a subscription is always required—or never required.
#1 Best Overall
- THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
- USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.
- GAME PASS READY — Apply your balance toward XBOX Game Pass Ultimate to play new titles on day one* and access a library of hundreds of high‑quality console games.
- PRE‑ORDER & PRE‑INSTALL GAMES — Use your balance to pre‑order and pre‑download upcoming titles so you’re ready to play the moment they launch.
- NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.
When the event window ends, access may end unless you purchase the game. Some events offer a limited-time purchase discount and let you continue playing after buying, but those terms are not universal; use the particular announcement to confirm what applies.
How the two types of access compare
| Question | Free-to-play game | Free game promotion |
|---|---|---|
| What does “free” describe? | The game’s access model while it is offered as free-to-play. | A temporary opportunity to play a selected game. |
| How long does access last? | It remains offered under that model while listed as free-to-play; catalogue availability can change. | For the announced event window. |
| Who can play? | Check the title and platform listing. Supported free-to-play console multiplayer is available without a paid subscription, per Xbox. | Check the individual event: it may require a qualifying Game Pass plan or be open to all Xbox members. |
| What happens afterward? | The title continues under its free-to-play model while offered that way; in-game purchases or benefits may still apply. | Access may end unless you purchase the game. Any discount or continued-play terms depend on the event. |
Example: the October 2026 Free Play Days event
Xbox announced Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Skull and Bones, and The Crew Motorfest for Free Play Days from Thursday, October 1 through Sunday, October 4, 2026. The event announcement said Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential were not required for those games. It also described limited-time purchase discounts and continuing to play after purchasing. The window ends October 4, 2026; this dated offer is an example, not a standing promise about later events.

Does multiplayer require Game Pass?
Not for online multiplayer in supported free-to-play games on Xbox console: Xbox announced that access is available at no charge. That is separate from Free Play Days, where membership requirements depend on the event and the games included.

Game Pass Core is a distinct case: Xbox’s published benefits include online console multiplayer and access to selected Free Play Days games. See Xbox’s Game Pass Core benefits announcement for those benefits. A game’s inclusion in a promotion does not make it a free-to-play title.

How to check which offer applies
- Find the game’s listing. Check the Xbox free-to-play catalogue or the game’s Xbox store page to see how it is offered.
- For an event game, open the event notice. Confirm its start and end dates, eligible players or membership, and any purchase or discount terms.
- Check the game’s own listing or console store collection. Event eligibility and access details can be title-specific; do not rely on a past event’s terms.
