Free-to-play games cost nothing to download, but may earn money through ads, optional in-app purchases, subscriptions, or a mix of them. Paid games charge you before you play; that upfront price can make spending easier to predict, but the label alone does not establish what a particular game includes. To compare fairly, check the game’s store listing and reviews for ads, optional purchases, recurring charges, and whether you can enjoy the game without paying more.
What “free-to-play” and “paid” mean
“Free” usually refers to the download price, not every part of the playing experience. Apple’s developer guidance distinguishes free apps with no monetization, free apps supported by display advertising, freemium apps with optional purchases, and paid apps. These are possible business models, and games can combine monetization methods. A free game is not necessarily ad-supported, and it does not necessarily require purchases.

Apple describes a paid app as a one-time download purchase with no additional charges or in-app purchases. Treat that as Apple’s model definition, not a guarantee about every game listing or every storefront. Check the specific game’s terms before buying. Apple’s business-model guide explains these categories.

Compare the likely cost, not just the download price
| What to compare | Free-to-play | Paid download |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | No charge to download, though optional purchases or subscriptions may be offered. | Pay before downloading or playing; check the particular listing for any additional offers or charges. |
| Ads | Some games show ads; others do not. Check the listing and reviews. | Do not assume a paid game is ad-free; verify the listing and reviews. |
| Optional purchases | May sell digital items, upgrades, or subscriptions; purchases are not necessarily required to play. | Check the listing and terms for the particular game and store. |
| Try before paying | You can usually download and try the game without an initial purchase. | You pay upfront, so look at reviews and the store’s refund terms before buying. |
There is no universal cost winner: the sources do not establish typical player spending, average game prices, ad frequency, or total cost differences. Your likely cost depends on the game’s design and on whether you choose to pay for items, subscriptions, or an ad-free option.

What ads and in-app purchases can look like
Ads and commercial prompts
Google Play’s “Contains ads” label is not intended to identify other commercial content, such as paid product placement or offers to buy upgrades. The label therefore does not tell you everything about how a game may ask for money. The FTC’s April 2025 consumer alert also warns that game-related ads can appear at different stages, and that some games represented as ad-free may still prompt players to pay for features. Check ratings and both positive and negative reviews for comments about interruptions, purchase prompts, and paid gates.
Items, upgrades, and subscriptions
In-app purchases are not all the same. Apple’s model guide describes these common types:

Apple’s description of freemium games says they can be downloaded and played at no cost while offering optional in-app purchases. Its guidance says successful freemium games should offer an experience to paying and nonpaying players; that is developer guidance, not independent proof that every game does so. Look for reviews discussing whether progress stalls, key features are pay-gated, or purchases feel necessary.

What store disclosures can and cannot tell you
Google Play requires developers to provide clear, accurate pricing information for apps, in-app features, and subscriptions, and says in-app prices displayed to users must match the Play billing interface. For games distributed through Google Play that sell randomized virtual items, such as loot boxes, Google Play policy requires odds to be disclosed before purchase and close to it. This is a Google Play policy, with exceptions and alternative billing programs for eligible regions—not a universal rule for every store or jurisdiction. See Google Play’s Payments policy.

A listing is a useful starting point, but it may not answer how often ads appear or whether a free game remains enjoyable without purchases. Read recent reviews as well as the listing, and check the game’s purchase terms before confirming a transaction.

Ratings and reviews can flag ads, recurring offers, subscriptions, or paywalls, but they cannot guarantee that a game contains none of these. The FTC recommends reviewing games and using device controls to disable purchases or require authentication, alongside clear family rules. Controls can help manage spending; they do not establish that a game is ad-free or that all content is available without payment.

Which model fits your preferences?
- Choose free-to-play when you want to try a game before spending and are comfortable checking for ads, purchase prompts, and pay-gated features. Set a spending limit—or avoid purchases—if optional offers could make costs hard to track.
- Consider a paid download when you prefer to pay at the start rather than decide about optional purchases as you play. Confirm what the specific listing includes, and do not infer that its paid label means it has no ads or additional offers.
- For a child’s game, base the decision on the content and monetization disclosures, reviews, and household purchase settings—not only on whether the download is free or paid.
