Free Streaming Channels on Your TV: Where to Find Them and What to Know

Open your TV’s Live TV section, channel guide, or built-in streaming app and look for free channels. Many smart TVs surface free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) services this way, but availability depends on your TV model, software, and country. You’ll need an internet connection, and “free” means no subscription fee for the relevant content—not ad-free viewing.

What is the free streaming feature on a TV?

It is usually a FAST service: live, scheduled channels streamed over the internet and supported by advertising. Some services also offer on-demand shows and films. Unlike traditional broadcast channels, these streams rely on your TV’s internet connection; unlike subscription streaming, the cited free content does not require a paid plan.

There isn’t one universal FAST feature built into every television. Depending on the platform, you may find it under a Live TV tab, in a channel guide, or inside a manufacturer’s streaming app. Channel lineups and access requirements vary.

Where can you find free channels on a smart TV?

Check the TV’s home screen for a Live TV or channel-guide option, then look for the manufacturer’s streaming service. If neither is obvious, open the TV’s app area and search for the service available on that platform. Confirm your TV model and country are supported before relying on a particular service.

  • Samsung TV Plus: Samsung describes TV Plus as a free, ad-supported streaming TV and video-on-demand service. Its newsroom page discusses integration in Samsung TVs from 2016–2023, but that historical scope is not a current compatibility list. Check your model and region.
  • LG Channels: LG’s US page says the service is free and does not require sign-up or login. LG says it is available on 2016-and-later LG Smart TVs, as well as Android, iOS, and web, while cautioning that the lineup may be limited by the TV’s operating system. Setup requires a network connection.
  • Google TV Live tab: Google’s April 11, 2023 announcement described more than 800 free channels in the US, drawing on Google TV and providers including Tubi, Plex, Haystack News, and Pluto TV. That was a dated US announcement, not a current count for every country or device; Google also noted that some channels may require a separate app.
  • Roku TV: Roku describes its TVs as providing access to hundreds of free live channels, alongside free and paid content from the home screen. Streaming requires Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

What do you need before watching?

  • A compatible TV or platform: Service support can differ by model, operating system, and country. Google says live content is subject to availability and partner services; LG says its lineup may be limited by TV operating system.
  • An internet connection: These are internet streams, not a way to receive over-the-air broadcasts without a network. Roku specifies Wi-Fi or Ethernet for streaming, and LG’s setup instructions require a network connection.
  • Possibly an app: A channel guide may bring services together, but some Google TV channels may require a separate app. Check the on-screen prompts for installation or sign-in requirements.

Should you buy a streaming device?

Not before checking the TV you already own. A compatible smart TV may already offer a built-in service or app. An external HDMI streaming player is worth considering only if your television cannot run a suitable service; confirm that the particular device supports the apps and services you want before buying. This does not mean every streaming stick supports every FAST service.

Why channel counts are hard to compare

Published totals can describe different countries, dates, and definitions of a channel, so they are not a reliable head-to-head measure. For example, Google’s figure of more than 800 referred to its US Live tab announcement on April 11, 2023. Lineups can change, and availability may depend on provider partners. Check the TV’s current guide or the service’s current regional information for what you can actually watch.
