Start with the games you want to watch and the location you’ll watch them from—not the word “free” or a service’s headline price. A free legal stream may not carry a particular live game, and paid subscriptions can still be subject to local or national blackouts. Compare event availability and the full cost of the services required for your games before you sign up.
What “free sports streaming” actually means
“Free” can mean an ad-supported service, or access to a game broadcast over the air. Neither guarantees that a specific event is available. Tubi describes itself as a free, legal, advertising-supported streaming service, but that general description does not establish that it carries the game you want. Check the event listing and its rights holder rather than assuming a free service has live coverage. Tubi

For over-the-air access, availability depends on whether the event is being broadcast by a local station and whether you can receive that station. The relevant question is not simply whether a service costs nothing; it is whether the game is legally available to you at no charge in your market.

Why one paid subscription may not be enough
Sports rights are split among broadcast networks, cable channels, streaming services, leagues, and regional providers. The NFL’s live-access guidance lists CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN/ABC, Amazon Prime Video, NFL Network, YouTube, and Netflix among the outlets used for regular-season games, subject to event and location qualifications. Use the NFL’s current schedule and instructions to identify the outlet for a specific game; the list is not a promise that every service carries every game. NFL: Ways to Watch

The same fragmentation applies elsewhere. NBA League Pass, for example, is subject to local and national restrictions because regional and national content providers have exclusive rights to some games. For US viewers, the NBA says a game blacked out on League Pass may instead require a regional sports network or national broadcast. NBA League Pass blackout policy
A 2026 Federal Register notice describes rights distributed across broadcast, cable, and streaming outlets. It recounts an estimate that watching all games during the 2025 NFL season across 10 services could cost more than $1,500. That is a reported estimate for that season and scope—not a typical bill for every fan or a universal price for watching football. Federal Register notice (2026)

Blackouts can affect paid services, too
A paid plan does not necessarily override a league’s or rights holder’s local restrictions. ESPN says some live events may be blacked out in a participating team’s home television territory. Availability depends on where you access the service, which may use location technology, and third-party services accessed through an ESPN subscription can have their own league blackout policies. ESPN explains that blackouts protect the primary rights holder in a market. ESPN blackout guidance ESPN Fan Support
Peacock advertises live sports such as Sunday Night Football and Premier League programming, but it also warns that in-market blackouts may apply under television availability and league policies—even when a regional sports network is available to purchase. The FCC eliminated its sports blackout rule in 2014. According to the 2026 Federal Register notice, sports blackouts remain possible under private contractual arrangements between teams or leagues and distributors. In practical terms, the end of the FCC rule did not make every game available on every service. Federal Register notice (2026)
How to compare services for the games you want
- List the events. Write down the teams, competitions, and specific games you care about, including the season or date range. “All NFL games” and “my team’s Sunday games” are different coverage requirements.
- Find each game’s official listing. Check the league or event schedule and the listed broadcaster or streaming service. For NFL games, begin with the NFL’s current viewing instructions; for other leagues, check that league’s schedule and viewing guidance.
- Check availability in your location. Read the service’s local, regional, and national blackout information for the relevant event. A general subscription page may not show whether your market is restricted.
- Add the full cost. Total every required plan for the games on your list, and include applicable taxes or fees. If you choose annual billing, compare the upfront payment as well as its monthly equivalent.
- Confirm the terms before paying. Recheck the schedule, current price, plan inclusions, and blackout conditions immediately before subscribing; rights and offers can change.
Example: pricing one relevant service is not the same as pricing a season
Peacock’s official US pricing page listed the following prices when checked in 2026. They are prices for those plans at that time, not a guarantee of current pricing or of access to every event a viewer wants.

| Peacock plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing | What the price tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | $12.99/month | $129.99/year | Plan price; check the event listing and blackout terms for the game you want. |
| Premium Plus | $19.99/month | $199.99/year | Plan price; check the event listing and blackout terms for the game you want. |
These figures alone cannot tell you the total cost of following a team or league: other games may be carried by other distributors, and a blackout may require a different outlet. Peacock’s prices and event coverage may change. Peacock plans (US; checked 2026)
Where can I watch this game for free?
Look up the specific game and date in the league’s schedule, then check the listed broadcaster or service for your location. If it is on a local over-the-air station, you may be able to watch without a paid streaming subscription, subject to reception. If the game is listed only on a paid service, a free service’s general availability does not make that event free to watch.

Will this subscription show my local team’s game?
Confirm the game’s local and national rights for your market, then read the service’s blackout policy. ESPN says location and league policy can determine whether an event is blacked out; the NBA says local and national rights can restrict League Pass. For Peacock sports, in-market restrictions may also apply. If the service’s listing does not clearly resolve your case, check its event-specific help information before paying.
