Windows 11 already includes the best starting point for most people: Snipping Tool. Press Windows + Shift + S for an image capture or Windows + Shift + R for a video snip. If you need scrolling captures, extensive annotations, OCR, uploads or automation, ShareX is the more configurable free choice. Greenshot is a lighter, productivity-focused open-source alternative.

Snipping Tool: the built-in Windows 11 option
Snipping Tool requires no separate download. Open the capture overlay with Windows + Shift + S, then choose a mode from the toolbar.
Available image modes
- Freeform: draw an irregular outline around the area.
- Rectangle: drag a rectangular selection.
- Window: select an individual window.
- Full screen: capture all visible displays.
The result is copied into the Snipping Tool window, where you can make changes, save it or share it. Microsoft also documents Print Screen as a way to copy a full-screen image to the clipboard.

Video snips
Press Windows + Shift + R to open the video capture overlay. Select the region, start recording and stop when finished. This is useful for showing a short interaction without installing a recorder.
Editing, OCR and redaction
Snipping Tool provides a pen, highlighter, shapes and cropping. Its text-recognition features can extract text from a capture and offer quick redaction of detected email addresses and phone numbers. Microsoft says recognition and redaction are performed locally on the device. Review the result before sharing: automated recognition can miss text or identify the wrong region.
Some newer capabilities, including Perfect Screenshot and Color Picker, are limited to Copilot+ PCs. Do not assume they are present on every Windows 11 computer.
When Snipping Tool is enough
- You need an occasional image of a window, region or entire screen.
- You want a built-in tool with no account or third-party installer.
- You need basic markup, cropping, text extraction or quick redaction.
- You want a short screen recording rather than a full production workflow.
ShareX: the advanced free and open-source choice
ShareX is free, open source and presented by its official site as having no advertisements. Its repository documents a configurable workflow without requiring an account. It is suited to people who capture frequently and want the capture, edit, upload and follow-up actions connected.
Capture modes and recording
- Full screen, active window, monitor and selected region.
- Scrolling capture for pages or documents longer than the visible window.
- Screen recording and animated GIF capture.
Editing and privacy tools
ShareX includes annotations and tools such as blur and pixelation. OCR is available for extracting text. Use blur or pixelation deliberately and inspect the exported image before publishing sensitive content; neither tool is a substitute for removing confidential data from the original source.

Automation and uploads
Hotkeys can launch particular capture actions. Configurable after-capture tasks can process a file, copy it, open it in an editor or send it to an upload destination. This makes ShareX a better fit than Snipping Tool when every capture follows a repeatable sequence. The exact upload services and account requirements depend on the destination you configure.
Who should choose ShareX?
- You routinely need scrolling pages, multiple monitors or active-window targeting.
- You want recording, GIF creation, OCR and richer annotation in one installation.
- You want hotkeys and after-capture automation instead of manual save-and-share steps.

Greenshot: a focused open-source alternative
Greenshot is a free, open-source Windows screenshot utility that its project describes as lightweight and optimized for productivity. The official downloads page listed Windows release 1.3.315, dated March 20, 2026. The page also mentions an optional $1.99 contribution to cover project costs; it is not a required price for the app.
Choose Greenshot when you want a dedicated desktop screenshot program and a simpler productivity orientation than a highly customized ShareX setup. Check the project’s current downloads page before installing because release details can change.

Capture a single application window
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose the window mode.
- Select the application window.
- Open the notification or Snipping Tool window to annotate, save or share.
Capture a long web page
- Install ShareX from its official project distribution.
- Choose its scrolling-capture action.
- Select the browser window and follow the on-screen capture boundary.
- Review the stitched image for repeated headers, lazy-loaded sections or clipped content before saving.
Record a short demonstration
- Press Windows + Shift + R.
- Select the area to record.
- Start and stop the recording from the overlay.
- Review the resulting clip before sharing; confirm that notifications and private windows were not visible.
Troubleshooting
The keyboard shortcut does nothing
Press the keys together and check whether another utility has reassigned the shortcut. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu to confirm it is installed. If the image overlay appears but saving fails, try a different destination and verify that the folder is writable.
A scrolling capture is incomplete
Scrolling capture depends on the target application’s scrolling behavior. Keep the page in a stable position, close overlays and check the final image for duplicated or missing sections. For content that loads only after interaction, scroll manually first or use a capture method that supports waiting and scripted actions.
OCR or redaction misses text
Increase the captured resolution, ensure text is not blurred or covered and inspect every redaction. OCR results are not guaranteed to recognize stylized, low-contrast or rotated text.

An upload workflow fails
Verify the destination configuration, network access and any required credentials. Save a local copy before retrying. If the service rejects the file, check its format and size limits rather than repeatedly sending the same capture.
Video contains private notifications
Turn off desktop notifications, close unrelated windows and select only the required region. Watch the complete recording before distributing it.
