Free Personal Website Builders for 2026: 9 Real Options, Limits, and Trial Traps

There is no single best free website builder. The right choice depends on whether you need a one-page portfolio, a blog, a multi-page profile, or a small store—and whether you can accept a platform subdomain, visible branding, storage limits, or transaction fees. In the evidence available for this guide, nine services are named clearly enough to compare. A tenth “best” entry cannot be identified without inventing a candidate, so this article does not pretend to rank one.

Use the comparison below to separate ongoing $0 plans from time-limited trials, match each builder to your site shape, and identify the restriction most likely to matter before you build.

The answer in one minute

  • For a simple one-page presence: Carrd is described by Wix’s comparison as suited to landing pages, portfolios, and personal sites.
  • For the simplest setup: Google Sites is characterized by TechRadar as straightforward, although less customizable than several alternatives.
  • For selling on a free tier: TechRadar reports that Weebly’s free plan permits online selling, but payment-processing fees apply and a custom domain cannot be connected.
  • For a broad feature set: Wix is described as offering drag-and-drop editing, templates, SEO and business tools, but TechRadar reports Wix branding and no custom-domain connection on its free tier.
  • For a trial rather than a permanent free site: Ucraft is listed in a Wix roundup, but that same article describes a 14-day trial. Under TechRadar’s eligibility rule, that is not an ongoing free plan.

WordPress.com, Webflow, Jimdo and Strikingly also appear in the reviewed roundups, but the available material does not establish current plan limits or independent test results for them. Treat them as options to verify, not as proven winners.

“Free” has two different meanings

Ongoing free tier

An ongoing free tier remains available without a required expiry date. It may still impose a platform subdomain, advertising or branding, limited storage, traffic caps, restricted analytics, or paid-only features. “$0” describes the subscription price, not necessarily a professional-looking address or unlimited use.

Free trial

A free trial ends after a stated period and normally requires payment to continue premium use. TechRadar’s eligibility rule excludes trials from a list of free builders. Ucraft is the clearest warning in the available sources: it appears in a roundup of free builders, while the same Wix article says its offer is a 14-day trial. Do not publish or choose it as a permanent $0 solution without checking the current terms.

Why the distinction matters

A trial can be useful for testing an editor, but it is a poor fit if your site must stay online at no cost. Before entering content, confirm the expiry date, whether the site is unpublished when the trial ends, and what happens to its address and files.

Comparison of the named options

The table uses only limits and descriptions reported in the available sources. “Not stated” means a current comparable figure was not established; it is not evidence that a service has no limit.

Builder Free status in the available evidence Best fit to investigate Reported restrictions or cautions
Carrd Free plan described in Wix’s comparison One-page portfolio, landing page or personal profile Basic customization is described; current domain, storage and feature limits were not established.
Google Sites Included by TechRadar as a free builder Simple informational site or project page TechRadar characterizes customization as more limited than Wix, WordPress or Webflow. It reports 100 MB per site in 2026, a figure not verified against Google documentation in the available material.
Weebly TechRadar reports an ongoing free plan Small site that may sell products TechRadar reports 500 MB storage and bandwidth, no custom-domain connection, and payment-processing fees. Verify current vendor terms.
Wix TechRadar reports a free tier Users wanting a visual editor, templates and broad built-in features TechRadar reports Wix branding and no custom-domain connection on free sites. Its feature descriptions come partly from a vendor-authored comparison.
Ucraft Described as a 14-day trial in Wix’s 2026 article Short-term experimentation, not a confirmed permanent free site Do not count the trial as an ongoing free plan unless current terms say otherwise.
WordPress.com Included in the reviewed roundups; current terms not established here Readers considering a publishing-focused platform Confirm subdomain, advertising, storage, plugins, themes and export rules on the current plan page.
Webflow Included in the reviewed roundups; current terms not established here Readers prioritizing visual design control Check the free staging address, publishing limits, CMS capacity and which features require a paid workspace or site plan.
Jimdo Included in the reviewed roundups; current terms not established here Readers seeking a guided site-building workflow Verify the free address, branding, storage, SEO controls and export or migration options.
Strikingly Included in the reviewed roundups; current terms not established here Simple personal or event site Confirm page, product, bandwidth and domain restrictions before committing content.

The available evidence does not identify a tenth named finalist. Rather than fabricate a ranking, use the nine documented names above and check any additional service against the same criteria.

What each documented option is good for

Carrd: a focused one-page presence

Carrd is the clearest fit when your site can be reduced to one scrolling page: a short biography, selected work, contact links, a résumé-style profile or a campaign landing page. Wix’s comparison describes customizable templates and basic customization on the free plan and specifically positions Carrd for one-page sites, landing pages, portfolios and personal sites.

Choose it when speed and focus matter more than a large information architecture. Before publishing, confirm whether the free plan supports the form, custom domain, analytics and embeds you need. If your portfolio will grow into several detailed project pages or a blog, a one-page tool may become a constraint rather than a benefit.

Google Sites: straightforward pages with less design freedom

TechRadar characterizes Google Sites as straightforward and less customizable than Wix, WordPress or Webflow. That trade-off suits a résumé, club page, class project, family information page or internal-to-public reference site where clarity matters more than bespoke visual design.

TechRadar reports a 100 MB per-site storage limit in 2026, but the figure was not verified against Google’s own documentation in the available material. Treat it as a source-reported number, not a guarantee. If you plan to host many large images or downloadable files, check the current limit and consider storing media elsewhere.

Weebly: a free selling option with important ceilings

TechRadar reports that Weebly’s free plan permits online selling, which distinguishes it from many basic personal-site tiers. The same report says storage and bandwidth are limited to 500 MB and that a custom domain cannot be connected. Payment-processing fees still apply when transactions occur.

That combination can work for a very small catalog or occasional sale if you accept the platform address and keep media light. It is a poor match for a growing shop, a portfolio with large galleries, or anyone who needs a domain that belongs exclusively to the brand. Confirm the current product, payment and transaction terms before taking orders; plan details can change.

Wix: broad tools, visible free-tier identity

TechRadar reports that Wix’s free sites carry Wix branding and cannot connect a custom domain. Its comparison highlights drag-and-drop editing, an AI builder, templates, SEO and business features. Those tools may reduce setup time for a personal site that needs several sections, forms or marketing controls.

The free-tier restrictions are decisive for a professional portfolio: visitors will see the platform identity and the address will remain on a Wix subdomain. Remove those limits only after checking the current paid plan and renewal price. Wix’s comparison is vendor-authored, so treat its feature descriptions as product information rather than independent testing.

Ucraft: a trial, not a confirmed free plan

Ucraft demonstrates why labels need scrutiny. Wix’s 2026 roundup includes it among free builders but also says the offer lasts 14 days. That makes it a trial under the ordinary definition, not an ongoing $0 tier. Use it only if a short evaluation period meets your goal, and record the end date before you begin.

WordPress.com: verify publishing terms before choosing

WordPress.com appears in both reviewed roundups, but the available material does not establish current plan limits. If you are considering it for a blog or frequently updated personal site, verify the free address, advertising policy, storage, theme choices, plugin access, export tools and upgrade requirements directly on the current plan page.

Webflow: investigate the free staging model

Webflow is included in the reviewed roundups, but no current free-plan figures are established here. Its suitability depends on how much design control you need and whether a staging address is acceptable. Check CMS item limits, publishing frequency, form handling, code export and the point at which a site plan or workspace payment becomes mandatory.

Jimdo: confirm what the guided workflow includes

Jimdo also appears in the roundups without documented current limits in the available evidence. A guided builder can be attractive if you want fewer design decisions, but verify the free subdomain, branding, page count, storage, SEO settings and migration path before investing time in content.

Strikingly: check one-page and bandwidth boundaries

Strikingly is named in the reviewed sources, yet its present free terms are not stated. If you are considering it for a personal or event site, check whether the free plan limits pages, products, bandwidth, forms or domain connection. A quick editor is valuable only if the resulting limits match the life of the site.

How to choose without being misled by a “free” label

1. Define the site shape

  • One page: Start with Carrd, or investigate a simple option such as Google Sites.
  • Several profile or portfolio pages: Compare Wix, WordPress.com, Webflow, Jimdo and Strikingly against page, CMS and branding limits.
  • Blog or journal: Verify publishing tools, categories, media storage, export and advertising before selecting WordPress.com or another platform.
  • Small store: Weebly is the only option here with a source-reported free selling capability; confirm payment support and fees before launch.

2. Decide whether the address matters

A platform subdomain is usually the price of a free tier. If you need yourname.com, confirm both that the builder can connect a domain and that the feature is available on the free plan. TechRadar specifically reports that Wix blocks custom-domain connection on free sites and that Weebly does the same.

3. Audit branding and advertising

Look at the footer, header and published URL—not just the editor preview. Branding may be acceptable for a résumé link shared privately but distracting on a freelance portfolio. Record exactly what visitors will see before you distribute the address.

4. Measure capacity against your media

List your expected images, downloads, videos and monthly visitors. TechRadar reports 500 MB storage and bandwidth for Weebly’s free plan and 100 MB per site for Google Sites, with the latter unverified against Google documentation. For every other option, the current comparable figure is not established here, so check the live plan terms rather than assuming unlimited storage or traffic.

5. Check the features you cannot replace later

  • Contact forms and spam controls
  • Blog or CMS support
  • Analytics and SEO controls
  • Payment processing and transaction fees
  • Custom code, embeds or integrations
  • Collaboration permissions
  • Export, backup and migration options

6. Read the exit conditions

Find out what happens when you exceed storage, cancel a paid upgrade, miss a renewal or finish a trial. Download original images and text separately, keep a copy of your domain settings, and avoid making a time-limited trial your only copy of important work.

A practical build-and-check procedure

  1. Write a one-sentence purpose. For example: “A one-page portfolio with six projects and a contact link.” This prevents you from paying for features you will not use.
  2. Shortlist two or three builders. Select by site shape first, then remove any option whose free address or branding is unacceptable.
  3. Open the plan details before the editor. Confirm whether “free” is ongoing, the expiry date if it is a trial, storage and traffic limits, domain rules and payment fees.
  4. Create a minimal test site. Add one representative image, a form, your intended navigation and any embed you require. Do not migrate all content yet.
  5. Publish privately or to a temporary address. Check the mobile layout, page speed, footer branding, URL, metadata and form delivery from a visitor’s perspective.
  6. Test the upgrade boundary. Identify the exact feature that would force payment: a custom domain, extra storage, additional pages, analytics, products or removal of branding.
  7. Back up before launch. Save copy, images and a list of settings outside the builder. Confirm how you would move if the free plan changes.

Costs that can appear after a $0 start

The first likely expense is a custom domain or the plan needed to connect one. Other common upgrade triggers are removal of builder branding, extra storage or traffic, advanced analytics, collaboration, forms, integrations and ecommerce features.

Wix’s comparison lists starting paid prices of $17 per month for Wix and $9 per year for Carrd. Those are Wix-published comparison figures, not independently confirmed checkout prices, and prices can vary by region, billing cycle, taxes and promotions. Check the current vendor plan page before budgeting or quoting a price.

For a store, include payment-processing and transaction fees in the calculation. TechRadar specifically cautions that fees apply to Weebly selling. A free storefront can therefore cost money on every sale even when the site subscription remains $0.

Common failure modes and fixes

“I thought it was free, but the site expired.”

You probably selected a trial. Recheck the plan label and end date; Ucraft’s reported 14-day offer is an example. Move to an ongoing tier or export your content before the deadline.

“My professional domain will not connect.”

Custom-domain connection may be paid-only. TechRadar reports this restriction for Wix and Weebly free sites. Confirm the upgrade requirement before designing around a URL you cannot use.

“The page looks acceptable in the editor but not to visitors.”

Publish a test URL and inspect it on a phone, in a private browser window and with images enabled. Check platform branding, navigation, form delivery and the exact address visitors receive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I ran out of space or bandwidth.”

Compress images, remove duplicate downloads and compare the measured limit with your traffic. Weebly’s source-reported 500 MB storage and bandwidth ceiling and Google Sites’ source-reported 100 MB per-site figure show why capacity must be checked rather than assumed.

“The builder cannot do one essential task.”

Do not force a workaround for a core requirement such as payments, export or forms. Return to the feature checklist and choose a platform whose free or paid path supports that requirement transparently.

How to interpret “tested and compared” claims

TechRadar’s May 29, 2026 guide describes its own hands-on method: researching vendor material, signing up for each free builder, creating and populating a site, evaluating management and marketing tools, and assessing visitor experience. That is TechRadar’s methodology, not evidence that this article’s publisher performed those tests.

The Wix comparison names Maddy Osman and shows a September 7, 2026 publication date with a later edit noted at access time. It is useful for feature discovery, but vendor authorship creates a commercial-bias concern. Use it alongside, not instead of, current vendor terms and your own short test site.

Because the available material does not provide a reproducible ten-service test set or current limits for every named builder, the responsible conclusion is a decision framework, not a fabricated ranking.

Bottom line

Start with the shape of your site, then eliminate any builder whose free address, branding, capacity or feature limits conflict with your purpose. Carrd is the most clearly documented fit for a focused one-page personal site; Google Sites favors simplicity; Weebly is notable for source-reported free selling but has a 500 MB ceiling, no custom-domain connection and payment fees; Wix offers a broad visual toolkit while retaining branding and a platform address on free sites. Treat Ucraft as a 14-day trial unless current terms prove otherwise, and verify every unstated limit for WordPress.com, Webflow, Jimdo and Strikingly before committing your content.
