West of Loathing is the closest match for an open-world western, while Best in the West is explicitly free to play but describes short online matches aboard a steam train rather than a persistent open world. Their hardware requirements are very different: West of Loathing lists a 2 GB RAM minimum on Windows, whereas Best in the West requires 8 GB RAM, a GTX 960/Radeon R7 370-class graphics card and broadband internet.

If your priority is a roaming western map and a low-end PC, start with West of Loathing’s requirements. If “free” is non-negotiable, Best in the West is the listed free-to-play option, but plan for a considerably stronger PC and a broadband connection.

West of Loathing’s hand-drawn 2D presentation and low published memory and storage targets make it the most accessible open-world western in this comparison. The figures below are the Windows requirements listed on its Steam page.

Can a low-end PC run West of Loathing?
A computer that meets even the minimum 2 GB RAM, 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, 512 MB graphics-memory and 4 GB storage figures should satisfy the listed baseline. A modern entry-level or office PC normally exceeds those numbers by a wide margin. That indicates substantial headroom for the game’s 2D workload, but it is still an inference from the art style and requirements, not a measured frame-rate result.

No cited source publishes an FPS benchmark, frametime chart or complete graphics-options matrix for West of Loathing. Therefore, do not treat a particular “60 FPS” claim as guaranteed. Start at your display’s native resolution with the default settings, then change one option at a time only if you observe stutter, input lag or visible slowdown.

Best in the West: free-to-play requirements
Best in the West is the strongest free-to-play match in the available data. Its store page describes a ten-minute online fight on a steam train, not a persistent open-world campaign. That distinction matters: you should not buy or install it expecting the open-ended map structure described for West of Loathing.

The recommended graphics entry is written as “GTX 2080” in the store requirements. Because no further qualification is supplied, do not silently reinterpret that label as a different model. The minimum specification is already far above West of Loathing’s 2 GB RAM and 4 GB storage baseline, so an old integrated-graphics laptop may fail even if it can launch the 2D game.

What the online requirement changes
Best in the West needs broadband internet in addition to local hardware. A PC that meets the CPU, RAM and GPU figures can still be unsuitable if the connection is unavailable or unstable. Network interruptions may appear as match disconnects or delayed actions rather than a graphics frame-rate problem; lowering visual quality will not repair a lost connection.
How heavy are other western games?
Two comparison points show why requirements vary so sharply between a stylized 2D adventure and modern 3D westerns.

These figures are requirements, not a shared benchmark. Wild West Legacy’s 720p/low and 1080p/high labels are explicit quality targets in its support information; the Red Dead Redemption 2 figures do not include a corresponding resolution target in the available data. A machine suitable for either comparison game is not automatically needed for West of Loathing.

Use the procedure below as a conservative tuning order. It is guidance based on the published requirements and target settings, not a measured test result.
- Confirm the correct baseline. Compare your operating system, CPU, RAM, graphics memory and free storage with the game’s minimum table. For Best in the West, also confirm 64-bit Windows, DirectX 11 support and broadband internet.
- Start at the native resolution. For West of Loathing, leave the display at its native resolution and use default settings first. The game’s requirements and 2D presentation suggest a low-demand workload, but they do not establish a guaranteed FPS.
- Use the publisher’s stated target when available. For Wild West Legacy hardware near minimum, begin at 1280×720 with the low-quality preset. For its recommended tier, begin at 1920×1080 with high quality.
- Reduce resolution if frame time remains unstable. On a 3D game, moving from 1080p to 900p or 720p reduces the number of pixels the GPU must draw. Expect a softer image, especially on a high-resolution monitor.
- Lower shadows next. Shadow maps can be expensive on older graphics cards. Reduce the shadow setting before cutting every option indiscriminately.
- Lower effects. Volumetric effects, particles and post-processing can create spikes during combat or busy scenes. Choose the next lower preset and check whether frame pacing improves.
- Reduce view distance last among the major options. Shorter view distance can help a GPU or CPU that struggles with distant objects, but it also makes scenery and characters appear later. Use it after resolution, shadows and effects.
- Change one setting at a time. Play the same type of scene after each change. This identifies which option matters on your machine and avoids mistaking a network issue for a graphics issue.
Interpreting what you see
- Low FPS everywhere: the graphics card may be below the game’s minimum or the resolution may be too high. Lower resolution first.
- Brief stutters during effects: reduce effects and shadows, then retest the same action.
- Slowdown only when looking across a large area: reduce view distance; this pattern can involve scene complexity rather than display resolution alone.
- Disconnects or delayed responses in Best in the West: investigate the broadband connection; visual settings cannot correct network instability.
- Not enough disk space: free at least the listed capacity—4 GB for West of Loathing, 15 GB minimum or 30 GB recommended for Best in the West, 15 GB for Wild West Legacy and 150 GB for Red Dead Redemption 2.
Choosing the right game for your PC

What the published requirements do—and do not—prove
A minimum specification means the publisher considers that class of hardware a starting point for running the software; it does not promise a fixed frame rate, stable frametimes or a particular image quality. Recommended specifications likewise do not establish a universal FPS because results depend on resolution, drivers, background load and the exact scene.
For that reason, the safest expectation is qualitative: West of Loathing should be the least demanding candidate based on its 2D presentation and very low listed targets; Best in the West needs a mid-range gaming-class baseline and an internet connection; the two 3D comparison games require far more memory, graphics power and storage. Treat any exact FPS number not accompanied by a reproducible test as an estimate rather than a published fact.
