For a quick conversion without creating an account, OCR.space is the clearest fit among the options covered here: its service page says it accepts image and PDF uploads, supports multi-page and multi-column documents, and limits each document to 5 MB. If you already use Google Drive, opening an uploaded file with Google Docs can produce editable text, though complex layouts may not survive intact. These are different workflows, not a tested ranking: current, comparable accuracy results for five tools are not established.
What free online OCR can—and cannot—do
Optical character recognition (OCR) turns text represented as pixels in a photo, image, or scanned page into machine-readable text. That can make a page searchable or let you copy and edit its words. Recognition and formatting are separate: a service may identify the words while losing columns, tables, spacing, or reading order.

The options below are useful routes for different needs, not a claim that five services were tested against the same files. No comparable accuracy or speed benchmark is established for them. Free access also varies: a browser tool, cloud-account workflow, desktop application, and locally installed OCR engine differ in setup, output, and where processing may take place.
Which OCR route fits your file?
OCR.space: direct browser upload
OCR.space says its web tool accepts image and PDF uploads without registration, handles multi-page and multi-column documents, and has a 5 MB limit per document. Its page also offers searchable-PDF options. That makes it a practical starting point when you have an existing image or PDF and want to extract text in a browser. Check the service page for current limits and formats before relying on it: OCR.space.

OCR.space states: “All uploaded files and extracted text are automatically deleted immediately after OCR processing is complete.” This is the provider’s published privacy claim, not an independently audited guarantee. Do not treat it as a substitute for your organization’s rules on handling confidential documents.
Google Drive and Docs: editable document output
A described workflow is to upload an image or PDF to Google Drive, then open it with Google Docs to convert it into an editable document. The resulting text can be convenient when editing matters more than preserving the original page. Complex layouts may not convert cleanly, so inspect the document for missing text, altered reading order, and broken tables. A secondary guide describes this workflow and its layout caveat: MakeUseOf’s Google Docs OCR guide.

Microsoft OneNote: an existing-app possibility
Microsoft OneNote appears in a secondary comparison of free OCR options, but current consumer feature behavior and limits were not confirmed from a primary OneNote source. Treat it as a route to check if you already use OneNote, rather than assuming a particular import method, output, or free allowance. Microsoft’s separate document-processing OCR services are not the same thing as OneNote’s consumer OCR workflow; a Microsoft Learn page’s “through June 2026” no-cost-trial statement concerns selected document-processing services with pay-as-you-go billing configured, not a general OneNote promise.

PDF24: a route to investigate for searchable PDFs
PDF24 is named among free OCR options, including desktop or web use, and may be worth checking if the goal is a searchable PDF rather than plain editable text. Exact current limits and whether a particular workflow processes files locally or online were not established here. Confirm those details on the specific PDF24 tool page before uploading a document.
Tesseract: local OCR for a more hands-on workflow
Tesseract is an open-source OCR engine and a candidate for readers who value local control and repeatable processing. It is not the same convenience as uploading a file to a web page: installation and setup are part of the workflow, and output quality depends on configuration and input. Setup steps and performance on identical samples were not verified for this comparison, so it is best treated as a local-software direction rather than a plug-and-play online service.

How to choose without mistaking “free” for equivalent
- For an occasional image or PDF conversion: start with the browser workflow whose accepted formats and file limit match your document.
- For editable text in a document: a cloud document workflow such as Drive and Docs may suit you, but check the output carefully when the original has columns or tables.
- For privacy-sensitive material: establish where processing happens and what the provider says about retention. A provider’s own deletion statement is not an independent audit; local processing can offer a different control model but requires setup.
- For searchable PDFs: confirm that the chosen service returns a searchable PDF, not only extracted plain text.
- For routine or high-volume work: test your own representative files before settling on a workflow; a free allowance or upload limit can change what is practical.
Check the OCR result before relying on it
OCR can confuse similar-looking characters, omit faint words, or read columns in the wrong order. Review names, dates, numbers, and any text that will be used for decisions. For a table or multi-column page, compare the extracted text with the original rather than assuming a clean-looking output preserved the structure.
A fair comparison would use the same rights-cleared files in every tool: a clean single-column scan, a skewed or low-resolution page, a two-column page, and a page with a small table. Record the date, input type and size, account requirement, output, elapsed time, free-tier restriction, and errors in a fixed text sample. Keep provider privacy statements separate from observations about the conversion. Without such a shared test, there is no sound basis to call one option the most accurate or fastest.
