“Free” on the Nintendo eShop means the download costs nothing. It doesn’t mean the game is purchase-free or that your child can’t talk to strangers in it. Nintendo’s own listings for popular free games carry labels such as “In-Game Purchases” and “Users Interact.” Before a free game goes on a child’s Switch, check that game’s listing and set purchase and communication limits.
What “free” actually covers
Nintendo’s December 22, 2025 roundup of free Switch games lists titles you can download at no price. It also says optional in-game purchases are available in select titles and may let players progress faster. The roundup is a dated snapshot. Titles can leave the store or change, so treat it as examples rather than a permanent catalog.

The games Nintendo named include Pokémon UNITE, Fall Guys, Fortnite, Rocket League and Pokémon Café ReMix. That is a list of what Nintendo featured. It isn’t a ranking of the best games for kids. Whether a game fits depends on your child’s age, tolerance for content and comfort with online interaction.

How three popular free games differ
These descriptors come from Nintendo’s Switch store listings. Ratings and labels can change, so check your local listing.
#1 Best Overall
- Case size : 6.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 inches.
- Internal mesh pocket conveniently stores cables, cords, chargers, AMP, earpads, adapters and other accessories.
- Engineered hard EVA outer shell protects against drops, impacts or crushes. Soft inner maximize controller protective in the case.
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch Pro controller case. A good replacement or upgrade of the original controller case.
- Package: 1 x Controller carrying case. Note: Other devices are not included.
| Game | Content descriptor | Interaction and purchase labels | Notes from the listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon UNITE | Fantasy Violence | Users Interact; In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items) | Five-versus-five team battles, cross-platform play, online player range of 1–10 |
| Fall Guys | Mild Cartoon Violence | Users Interact; In-Game Purchases | Free cross-platform party royale; modes where players compete or cooperate |
| Fortnite | Not stated here | Users Interact; In-Game Purchases | Many game experiences, with individual age ratings for Fortnite islands |
Two points stand out. Pokémon UNITE’s label mentions random items, so check what your child is spending on. Fortnite isn’t one uniform game. Content varies by island or experience, so check the specific experience your child wants to play, not just the Fortnite listing.
Controlling purchases
Nintendo splits parental controls into two places. Purchase and viewing restrictions for eShop activity are set through the parent or guardian Nintendo Account for a child or supervised account. Content limits by age and in-game communication limits are set on the device or in the Parental Controls mobile app. The app also adds play-time limits and gameplay history. Console play-time limits alone don’t stop purchases.

Region matters here. Nintendo Japan’s support page says its purchase restriction can block paid downloadable software, add-on content, game items and Nintendo Switch Online memberships bought with account balance. It also says that specific control can’t block the download of free software itself, though in-game item purchases can be blocked. That wording is Japan-specific. Check the wording and screens in your own region’s Nintendo Account settings.
A setup sequence for parents
- Find the game in your local Nintendo store and read its age rating and content and interaction descriptors.
- Check whether the listing mentions in-game purchases or random items.
- Review the eShop purchase restrictions on the child’s or supervised Nintendo Account, through the parent or guardian account.
- Set communication restrictions, then set play-time limits in the Parental Controls app to match your household rules.
- Talk with your child about not sharing their name, address, email address or phone number with people online, as Nintendo advises.
The Parental Controls app is free. It needs a Nintendo Account and an internet connection, and it offers controls that aren’t all available on the console itself.

Online play and Nintendo Switch Online
Two questions get mixed up. One is whether a game lets players interact online, which shows in the listing’s online player count and “Users Interact” label. The other is whether you need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to use it. Nintendo’s online services guidance shows membership requirements vary by service and feature. Don’t assume a free game needs a membership, or that it never does. Check the individual game and feature.
To manage the interaction side, Nintendo’s parental controls let you customize online features and restrict communication.

- 【Shockproof & Scratch-Resistant – Avoid Costly Repairs】Tired of drops, scratches or dents causing costly repairs? Our 1-piece high-impact switch 2 hard shell case is affordable preventive insurance: thickened corners absorb 60-inch fall shocks (commuter slips, kid tumbles, mid-game hand slips). Scratch-resistant surface resists scrapes from keys, chargers, backpack gear—ideal for safeguarding your device as top-tier switch 2 protective covers. Lab-tested 10,000+ times, NinABXY switch 2 protective case keeps Switch 2 like-new for years
- 【Pop-up 1-Press Joy-Con Release – Uninterrupted Multiplayer&Motion Gaming】Fed up with generic switch 2 shell forcing you to yank off the entire shell just to play multiplayer or motion games? Our hidden spring-latch button design on this Switch 2 case solves this: press the +/- buttons on the back, detach Joy-Cons in 1 second—no prying, scratches, or hassle. Perfect for swapping in a charging Joy-Con mid-game. Tested 20,000+ times for zero wear, this switch 2 grip case lets you jump into gameplay without case removal
- 【Seamless Dock & Kickstand Compatibility – No Case Removal for Any Mode】Annoyed by generic switch 2 protective shell making you strip off the shell to charge/play 4K TV games, or blocking your Switch 2’s kickstand? Our switch 2 dockable case solves both: a slim PC build fits the original dock perfectly, with aligned ports preventing blockages. A precision kickstand cutout lets the built-in stand open freely. This dockable switch 2 case works seamlessly for big-screen 4K games, café multiplayer, or nightstand binge-watching. Built for how you actually play

Perfect for commutes, friend visits, café gaming—balancing portability, protection, style seamlessly
Optional: extra storage
