A free LLM server is not automatically unsafe, but “free” says nothing about who receives your prompts, how long they keep them, or whether they use them for training. Before sending anything sensitive, verify the operator, every provider in the processing path, and the terms for the exact endpoint and feature. If you cannot verify those details, use an approved alternative—or stop sending data.
What “safe” means for a free LLM server
Safety depends on the service’s data handling and security controls, not its price. You need to know who operates the endpoint, who processes its requests, what happens to prompts and responses, and whether the promises apply to the product and account you are actually using.

Do not treat a policy for one product as a guarantee for another. A consumer chat service, an API, a cloud-hosted model, and a routed inference endpoint may have different operators, retention rules, and exceptions. A provider’s zero-data-retention (ZDR) terms may also be limited to eligible customers, endpoints, or features.
“Not used for training” and “not retained” are separate claims. A service could say it does not train on prompts while still keeping logs for abuse monitoring or retaining application state. Encryption in transit protects data moving between systems; it does not answer what the receiving service stores or does with it.

What provider policies show—and where their limits are
OpenAI API
OpenAI says API data is not used to train or improve its models by default. Its API documentation also says default abuse-monitoring logs may contain prompts and responses and may be retained for up to 30 days, subject to stated legal and safety exceptions. ZDR and Modified Abuse Monitoring require eligibility and prior approval, and some features may retain application state even when ZDR is enabled. These statements concern the API, not every product or free endpoint.
Anthropic API
Anthropic documents ZDR arrangements for eligible API features and endpoints, with exceptions. Its documentation distinguishes the Claude API from claude.ai and says that using cloud platforms such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud brings those platforms’ own processor and retention policies into the picture. The documentation identifies Covered Models as requiring 30-day retention under the described arrangements; that is a scoped exception, not a universal retention rule for all Claude use.
Hugging Face Inference Providers
Hugging Face says that, when routing through Inference Providers, it does not store request bodies or responses, and that debugging logs are kept for up to 30 days without user data or tokens. It also says traffic is encrypted in transit and directs users to check each selected provider’s security policies. Those are Hugging Face’s published statements; the downstream provider’s terms still matter.

Business products are not a blanket guarantee
OpenAI’s business-data documentation says its listed business products and API do not use organization data for training by default, describes encryption at rest and in transit, and says qualifying organizations can configure retention controls. These commitments are scoped to the listed products and qualifying arrangements. They do not establish how an unrelated free endpoint handles data.
Red flags to check before you send a prompt
Use this checklist for the exact service, endpoint, account, and feature you plan to use:
- Unclear operator: You cannot identify the legal operator or find its terms and privacy policy.
- Unclear processing path: The service does not explain whether another model host or processor receives prompts and responses.
- Vague data-use claims: It says “private” or “not used for training” but does not separately explain abuse monitoring, logs, files, product storage, and deletion.
- Unclear scope: The promise is not tied to your endpoint, feature, plan, organization, or region—or eligibility is not clear.
- Missing security details: Encryption, account protections, or access controls are not described.
- No workable organizational controls: Your team cannot revoke credentials, remove integrations, or enforce rules about what data may be submitted.
A missing or vague answer is a reason not to send sensitive information. Do not infer that an endpoint is malicious simply because it is free or because its policies are hard to verify; these checks identify uncertainty, not proof of misuse.

How to compare safer alternatives

Compare candidates on operator and processor identity, training use, prompt and response retention, logs, third-party routing, deletion, data residency, feature exceptions, account eligibility, security controls, and the team’s ability to maintain the setup. A GPU-equipped workstation may suit some local workloads, but hardware needs vary substantially. OpenAI’s Help Center gives an 80 GB GPU as an example for the gpt-oss-safeguard-120b variant; it is not a general requirement for running LLMs locally.

Set an exit trigger before a problem occurs. Stop sending data if you cannot verify the operator, processing path, retention, training use, deletion process, or applicable security controls—or if observed behavior conflicts with the service’s published policy.
- Stop sending new prompts and remove the endpoint from tools and workflows.
- Revoke its API keys and connected-app access.
- Request deletion if the service provides a meaningful deletion mechanism.
- If sensitive information may have been exposed, follow your organization’s incident process.
This is a practical response plan, not a universal provider-mandated procedure. Whether deletion is available or what an incident requires depends on the service and your organization.

Questions to get answered before sharing sensitive data
Ask the operator for the policy covering your exact endpoint and feature. Confirm who receives prompts and responses; whether each party uses them for training; what is retained, including logs and files; how long it is retained; how deletion works; and which controls apply to your account. If routing is involved, check the downstream provider’s policy as well as the platform’s. If the answers remain unclear, choose a route your organization has approved.
