Treat these offers as current, limited quotas, confirm the terms for your account and model, and design your app to handle limits before relying on them.
Which LLM APIs have a free tier?
As of October 7, 2026, official documentation from Google, Cloudflare, and Groq describes ways to use their LLM APIs without an initial usage charge. Their free access differs in how it is measured, which models or accounts qualify, and what happens at the limit.

| Provider | What the documentation says about free access | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini API / AI Studio | Limited free access is available for certain models and eligible offerings. Google says AI Studio usage is free in available regions. [Google pricing documentation] | Check the active limits for your account and model in AI Studio; quotas vary by tier and may change. [Google rate limits] |
| Cloudflare Workers AI | Cloudflare documents 10,000 Neurons per day at no charge on both Free and Paid Workers plans. The allowance resets at 00:00 UTC. [Cloudflare pricing documentation] | Check the Neuron cost of the model you intend to use. Some named models require a paid billing method. [Cloudflare pricing documentation] |
| Groq API | Groq documents free-tier limits that vary by model and organization, with request and token caps over periods such as a minute or a day. [Groq rate limits] | Look up the exact limits in your account settings. Groq says its documentation provides a high-level summary. [Groq rate limits] |
These are not interchangeable quotas: Cloudflare measures usage in Neurons, while Google and Groq apply limits that depend on the model and account or tier. A free request count is not a meaningful comparison unless the model, input and output sizes, and applicable limits are also known.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

“Permanent free” is not established by the providers’ documentation. Google explicitly says its rate limits can change; Cloudflare and Groq describe current allocations and caps without promising they will remain unchanged indefinitely. Treat each free tier as a current offer, not a contractual guarantee.

Google’s pricing page states: “Google AI Studio usage is free of charge in all available regions.” That describes the documented offer, not a guarantee that pricing, access, or limits will never change. Before building around a free quota, review the provider’s live pricing, rate-limit, and account terms. [Google pricing documentation] [Google rate limits]
How much free API usage do you get?
Google Gemini API
Google describes limited free access for certain models and free input and output tokens for eligible offerings. It does not establish one universal quota that applies to every model, account, or project. View the active limits in AI Studio, where Google directs developers to check their current allowances. Cloudflare Workers AI
Cloudflare’s pricing documentation, last updated October 1, 2026, lists a free allocation of 10,000 Neurons per day, resetting at 00:00 UTC. This is a provider-specific usage unit, not a fixed number of prompts: the number of requests that fit depends on the model and workload. On Workers Paid, usage above the daily allocation is priced at $0.011 per 1,000 Neurons. Certain named models require a paid billing method. Check the live pricing page for the model and plan you will use. [Cloudflare pricing documentation]
Groq API
Groq’s documented limits are model- and organization-specific and include requests and tokens across time windows such as minute and day. Its public page is a high-level summary; the account settings show the limits applicable to your organization. The documentation does not give one cap that can safely be applied to every Groq model or account. [Groq rate limits]

What should you compare before choosing an API?
Compare the offer against your application’s needs, rather than declaring a single provider the cheapest. The reviewed documentation does not establish which service costs less for a particular workload; that depends on model choice, input and output token mix, and the quota that applies to your account.
- Model access: Confirm the model you need is included in free access and available to your account and region.
- Quota and measurement: Identify whether the limit is expressed in requests, tokens, or a provider-specific unit, and whether it applies per model, project, or organization.
- Limit response: Find out whether requests stop, return an error, or require a paid tier when you reach the cap.
- Data terms: Check how the provider handles prompts and outputs on the free tier.
- Upgrade requirements: Review whether upgrading requires a payment method and how additional usage is billed.
- Change risk: Check whether the provider says limits can change and where to find the current account-specific terms.
Can you use an LLM API without paying?
Yes, if your use fits an available free allocation and you meet its eligibility and billing requirements. “Free” means usage is capped, not unlimited. Google’s pricing documentation also draws a data-use distinction: it says content from the free tier may be used to improve Google products, while paid-tier content is not used for that purpose. Read the current terms for the tier you intend to use before sending sensitive prompts. [Google pricing documentation]
For Groq, moving to the Developer plan provides higher limits and additional features, and upgrading requires a valid payment method. Groq says users can downgrade to the free tier after settling outstanding usage, at which point free-tier limits and restrictions apply again. [Groq rate limits] [Groq billing FAQ]

What happens when you hit a free limit?
Plan for requests to fail or be throttled rather than assuming the provider will silently extend the free allowance.
- Groq: The API returns HTTP 429 when a rate limit is exceeded. Handle the response in your application, for example by pausing and retrying where appropriate or showing a clear message. [Groq rate limits]
- Cloudflare Workers AI: Cloudflare says further operations fail after the applicable limit is exceeded. Check the model’s Neuron usage and plan behavior before depending on uninterrupted processing. [Cloudflare pricing documentation]
- Google Gemini API: Check AI Studio for the limits active on your account and model. Google says limits can change, so avoid hard-coding an assumption that a particular quota will always apply. [Google rate limits]
For any provider, decide what your app should do when a request is rejected: retry only when appropriate, queue work if delays are acceptable, or stop with an informative error. Do not treat repeated retries as a substitute for checking the quota or billing terms.
