Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a straightforward, free full-page screenshot in Chrome, start with GoFullPage. Its listing focuses on capturing the current page in full and exporting it as an image or PDF. Choose FireShot instead if you need scrolling-area captures, multiple tabs, direct PDF links or annotation tools. GoFullScreenshot is a privacy-oriented option that also documents support for Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, while GoFully advertises OCR and redaction.
These extensions can capture ordinary websites, but none can bypass every browser restriction: pages such as chrome:// settings, extension pages and the Chrome Web Store are common exclusions. Long or dynamic pages can also need a second attempt or a different capture method.
Which free full-page screenshot extension should you choose?
The right choice depends on whether you mainly want a simple image, a PDF workflow, privacy-oriented local processing, or tools such as OCR and redaction. The comparison below reflects features documented by each vendor; it is not a performance test, and the specific free-versus-paid feature boundaries can change.
| Extension | Best fit | Documented capabilities | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoFullPage | Simple full-page captures | Captures the current page in its entirety and exports an image or PDF. | Its FAQ describes Chromium browser compatibility and explains that Downloads and iframe permissions are requested for particular functions. Recent dated change-log entries show that browser-specific edge cases continue to be patched. |
| FireShot | More capture and editing options | Full-page and scrolling-area captures, capture-all-tabs, PDF export with direct links, annotations, blur/effects, and PNG, GIF, JPEG and BMP output. | The listing distinguishes free functionality from Pro features; check the current listing for which feature you need. |
| GoFullScreenshot | Local-processing emphasis or Chromium-based Edge | Full-page, visible-area and select-area screenshots. The vendor says the core extension is free and emphasizes local handling without uploads. | Its feature page documents browser-controlled pages it cannot capture, including the Chrome Web Store and built-in PDF viewer. |
| GoFully | OCR, redaction or offline use | The listing advertises client-side OCR, annotation, blur/pixelate/blackout redaction, local capture history, PNG/JPG/WebP/PDF export and offline operation. | These are vendor listing claims, not independent test results. Confirm the current listing and permissions before relying on them. |
A quick decision
- Choose GoFullPage if your usual job is saving one ordinary webpage as a full-page image or PDF.
- Choose FireShot if you need to capture a scrolling region or several tabs, or annotate and export in several formats.
- Consider GoFullScreenshot if its local-processing approach and Chromium-based Edge support match your needs.
- Consider GoFully if OCR or redaction is central, but verify the advertised capabilities and handling on the current listing.
How to capture an entire webpage in Chrome or Chromium
For a normal website, the basic workflow is to install an extension from its browser-store listing, open the page you want, and invoke the extension from its toolbar. The extension then captures the page and offers its documented export options. Exact toolbar labels and export menus can change with updates, so follow the controls shown by the installed version rather than expecting a particular button name.

- Choose an extension for the output you need. For a simple image or PDF, begin with GoFullPage. If you need multi-tab capture, scrolling-area selection or annotation, check FireShot’s current free-feature boundary.
- Review the listing and permission prompt. Confirm the developer, requested access and privacy disclosure before installing. An extension that captures page contents necessarily needs some way to read or capture the tab.
- Open the target webpage and let it finish loading. If the page reveals more content as you scroll, scroll through it first where practical. A capture cannot include content that has not loaded or is unavailable to the page.
- Invoke the extension from its toolbar action. For area-based tools, choose the scrolling or full-page mode rather than a visible-viewport capture. Follow the extension’s prompts if it needs a download or frame-related permission for the selected function.
- Inspect the result before sharing it. Check the top, bottom, embedded frames, sticky headers, and any content that loads late. Save in the offered image or PDF format that suits the next step.
When the page is dynamic or unusually long
Pages with lazy-loaded images, infinite scrolling, sticky navigation, embedded frames or content that updates after load are harder to capture consistently than a static article. Scroll down the page before capture to trigger lazy loading, wait for animations or network activity to settle, and inspect the output for repeated sticky elements or missing sections. If the page keeps loading new content as you scroll, decide what portion you actually need: an extension cannot produce a stable full-page image of an endlessly expanding feed without a stopping point.
Extension vendors continue to make fixes for browser behavior and edge cases, so a failure on one page does not necessarily mean every page will fail. Conversely, no documented feature list guarantees a perfect result on every site. There is no independent performance comparison here, so choose based on documented workflow and test the extension on the type of page you actually capture.
Permissions, privacy and restricted pages
Chrome’s activeTab permission grants temporary access to the active tab after a user gesture, such as clicking an extension action. That access is revoked after navigation or when the tab closes. Chrome’s permissions documentation also excludes restricted pages such as chrome:// pages. For visible-tab capture, the tabs API documentation says an extension needs either activeTab or all_urls.

That distinction matters: a screenshot extension may work on a website after you click its toolbar button without having permanent access to every site. But permission labels alone do not tell the whole story. Read the store’s permission warning and privacy disclosure, and consider whether the extension’s stated data handling fits the pages you capture.
Pages that commonly cannot be captured
- Chrome settings and other browser-controlled
chrome://pages. - The Chrome Web Store and extension-management or extension pages.
- The browser’s built-in PDF viewer.
GoFullScreenshot explicitly documents several of these restrictions. They arise from browser security boundaries, not just from an extension’s feature set; installing a different extension will not necessarily make a restricted page capturable.

What “local processing” does and does not establish
GoFullScreenshot emphasizes local handling and says screenshots are not uploaded. GoFully advertises offline operation and local capture history. Those are vendor statements; check each extension’s current privacy disclosure for its precise data practices, including any optional features or services. Do not treat a privacy-oriented description as a substitute for reviewing requested permissions or the current disclosure.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The extension action is unavailable or capture does nothing on a browser page. | The target is a restricted browser page, extension page, Web Store page or built-in PDF viewer. | Try a regular website. Browser-controlled pages are excluded from extension access in common cases. |
| The bottom of the page is missing. | The capture started before late content or lazy-loaded sections appeared, or the page uses an unusual scrolling layout. | Scroll the page to trigger content, wait for it to settle, then capture again. Inspect whether a particular embedded frame or nested scroll area is the real target. |
| Headers or floating controls repeat in the image. | A sticky or fixed element remains visible while the extension stitches page sections together. | Check whether the extension offers an option for the capture mode or area you need. If the extension supports annotations or effects, those may help with presentation, but they do not correct every stitching issue. |
| The extension asks for additional permission when saving or capturing a frame. | A feature may need access to downloads or iframe content. | Read the prompt and the extension’s explanation. Grant only permissions you understand and need; otherwise choose a workflow that does not require that feature. |
| An advertised OCR, redaction or export feature is unavailable. | The feature may have changed, may be limited to a paid tier, or may not be enabled in the installed version. | Recheck the current store listing and free/Pro distinction before depending on it. For GoFully, treat OCR and redaction as advertised vendor capabilities, not independently verified results. |
When a browser extension is not the right capture method
Extensions are convenient when a person is already viewing a page and wants an image or PDF. They are less convenient for repeatable captures in a script, a batch of URLs, a backend workflow, or an AI agent that needs to request screenshots without operating a browser toolbar. In those cases, a screenshot API can return the capture to an application instead of relying on manual extension use.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
For a basic WebP capture, replace the example URL with the page you want and your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. It supports full-page capture, CSS element capture, device and viewport settings, PDF options, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, headers, cookies, caching, bulk capture and other controls; all features are on every plan. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Choosing between the four extensions
For a one-off screenshot of a normal webpage, GoFullPage is the simplest documented starting point. FireShot is the better fit when the capture itself is part of a broader editing or multi-tab workflow. GoFullScreenshot and GoFully make stronger privacy or offline-oriented claims, but users should check the current disclosures and listings before trusting a feature for sensitive work. In all cases, the page type and browser restrictions may matter more than the extension name.

Can I use a Chromium-based browser other than Chrome?
GoFullScreenshot’s vendor feature page specifically documents support for Chromium-based Microsoft Edge. GoFullPage’s FAQ says Chromium browsers can use the extension. For another browser, verify its current extension-store compatibility before installing.
Will a full-page extension capture a page that requires me to sign in?
The material here does not establish a universal rule for authenticated pages. A capture can only reflect what is available to the tab and the extension under its permissions; check the extension’s disclosure and avoid granting access to sensitive content unless its data handling is acceptable to you.
