You can add a free Christmas overlay to a YouTube livestream by choosing a holiday design in Streamlabs, checking that the specific item is free, and installing it in Streamlabs Desktop or OBS. A holiday collection is a place to browse—not a guarantee that every design is free or licensed for every use—so check the selected overlay’s access and usage terms before using it, especially on a monetized stream.
Where to find Christmas overlays
Start with the Streamlabs Overlay and Widget Theme Library. Streamlabs groups designs into collections that can include holidays, making it a useful place to look for seasonal artwork. Its library includes many free overlays and widget themes, while full-library access is part of Streamlabs Ultra. Those general statements do not establish the price or access terms of any particular Christmas design; verify the item’s status in the library before installing it.

You can also browse holiday collections using Streamlabs’ guide to navigating the overlay library. Compare candidates by whether they work with your streaming software, whether that specific theme is free or requires Ultra, which scene components it includes, and what its usage terms allow. The available official sources do not rank designs by visual quality or performance.
Install an overlay in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open the Streamlabs overlay library, browse its holiday collection, and check the chosen design’s access status and usage terms.
- Select the overlay and choose Select and Install.
- Choose the components you want, then confirm the installation in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Open the relevant scene in your scene collection and check that the overlay appears as intended before going live.
Streamlabs’ overlay installation guide also describes importing an .overlay file through Settings → Scene Collections → Import Overlay File. Follow the prompts in the app, then review the imported scenes and components.

Add a Christmas overlay in OBS
Streamlabs documents an OBS plugin route as well as an import route that does not require the plugin. Its Streamlabs Plugin for OBS Guide says the plugin is free to download and use, while some features and premium themes are Ultra benefits. Check the selected theme’s own access requirements; a free plugin does not make every theme free.
- Choose a theme in the Streamlabs library and confirm whether it is free or requires a subscription.
- Use the plugin installation workflow if you want to add supported Streamlabs components within OBS, following the plugin guide’s current steps.
- Alternatively, import the supplied
.overlayfile using the scene-collection import workflow described in Streamlabs’ setup guide. - If you have separate image files instead, add them as image sources to the relevant scenes—for example, Starting Soon, Live, or BRB. In the OBS canvas, check source order, scale, and placement so the artwork does not cover important content.
- Preview the scenes before starting the YouTube broadcast. Check that the overlay is visible in the scenes where you want it and that text, alerts, or other on-screen elements remain readable.
OBS itself is free for any use and can be used commercially, according to the OBS Project Help Portal. That software license does not grant permission to use third-party overlay artwork. Check the selected design’s item-level terms, particularly if your stream is monetized; the reviewed sources do not establish one universal license for every library asset.

Check the artwork’s access and usage terms
- Free access: confirm the specific design is marked free before building scenes around it. Streamlabs’ statements that many items are free and that Ultra includes the full library do not settle an individual item’s status.
- Subscription features: some animated overlays and widget themes are described as Ultra features. If the design depends on a premium component, check whether it will work with your account and setup.
- Permission to use: review the artwork’s own terms, including whether your intended use is allowed. Do not assume OBS’s commercial-use terms also cover graphics made by someone else.
- Scene fit: check that the overlay fits your stream layout and does not obscure gameplay, a camera feed, captions, or other information viewers need to see.
Or let it run in the cloud
A Christmas overlay is a scene graphic; it does not keep a YouTube stream running by itself. If your goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded videos stream at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
