Windows already includes a free antivirus engine, Microsoft Defender Antivirus, and that is the only no-cost protection we can confirm from Microsoft’s own documentation for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Beyond it, the business-grade products that independent labs test are commercial licenses, and the consumer “free” editions that rank well in searches are personal-use products whose commercial-use rights you have to check yourself.
This guide explains what Windows includes, where the built-in protection stops being enough, what the licensed options cost and how they are licensed, what the 2025 and 2026 business tests actually measure, and how to verify licensing before you roll anything out.

Why a “top 7 free” list does not hold up for enterprises
A ranking of free enterprise antivirus needs two things: products that protect business endpoints well, and licensing that allows business use at no charge. The evidence supports the first requirement for several paid products and the second only for the Windows-included engine. Filling a list of seven with consumer free editions would mean recommending software whose business-use terms have not been confirmed, and filling it with paid products would contradict the word “free” in the title.
The more useful split is between three categories: protection that comes with Windows, licensed endpoint platforms built for businesses, and consumer free editions that should stay off managed business machines unless their vendor’s terms say otherwise.

What Windows already includes
Microsoft’s Learn documentation states: “Microsoft Defender Antivirus is available in Windows 10 and Windows 11, and in versions of Windows Server.” Microsoft’s overview of Defender Antivirus in Windows describes it as a component of next-generation organizational endpoint protection. It operates in active, passive, or disabled modes, and it is designed to coexist with some other antivirus products.
Two names cause confusion. The antivirus engine is built into Windows and is managed through the Windows Security app. Microsoft Defender is a separate application that is distinct from that built-in antivirus. When a reader asks whether “Windows Defender is enough,” they are usually asking about the built-in engine, and the answer depends on what they need to manage across machines.
Checking the built-in protection on a PC
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security and select Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection and confirm that real-time protection is on.
- To check the running mode from PowerShell as an administrator, run
Get-MpComputerStatus | Select-Object AMRunningMode, AntivirusEnabled. - Review the value of
AMRunningMode. A value ofNormalindicates Defender is the primary antivirus. A value ofPassive Modeindicates another antivirus product is active and Defender is supporting it. Treat either outcome as a status to verify, not a complete security assessment.
When built-in protection is not enough
Windows’ built-in engine protects an individual machine. It does not, by itself, answer the questions an IT team usually has to answer for a fleet. The source material does not establish that inclusion alone provides every centralized management, detection, or response capability an enterprise might want, so check these before relying on it alone:

- Can you see the protection status, threat history, and policy state of every device from one console?
- Can you enforce settings across all endpoints and prevent local users from disabling protection?
- Do you have a response workflow for detections, including isolating a device and investigating what ran on it?
- Do you have servers in the environment, and do you know which licenses cover them?
- Do you run specialized line-of-business software that could trigger false alarms?
- Do you have more than 300 users? Microsoft’s small and medium business product, covered below, is scoped to that limit.
Licensed options for businesses
The most clearly documented licensed option from Microsoft in the available sources is Defender for Business, a separate product from the built-in engine.
Microsoft Defender for Business
Microsoft’s Defender for Business frequently asked questions, last updated August 7, 2026, describes the product as designed for small and medium-sized businesses with up to 300 users. The FAQ says server instances require an additional license and lists a Defender for Business servers add-on at $3 per server instance. That figure is the list price stated on that page, and it does not make the product free.
The Microsoft Product Terms for Microsoft Defender add licensing limits that matter for deployment planning:

What the independent business tests measure
Independent labs test business products under conditions that differ from consumer reviews, and they report results by edition. Two sources are relevant here, and neither is a ranking of free products.
AV-TEST, Windows 11 business clients, October 2025
AV-TEST’s October 2025 Windows 11 business-client test scores protection, performance, and usability. It covers three named products, and the results apply to those specific editions and that test date, not to the brands in general.
Rank #4
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.

| Product (as named in the test) | Protection | Performance | Usability | Total score shown on page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avast Ultimate Business Security | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 25.6 |
| Bitdefender Business Security Enterprise | 6/6 | 5.5/6 | 6/6 | 7.9 |
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Enterprise) | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 4.18 |
The total scores are reproduced as printed on the AV-TEST page. The page’s category ratings are the more direct comparison. Note that all three products tested are business editions, and the test does not establish that any of them is free for business use. Newer AV-TEST business reports may exist, so check the testing body’s current listings before you cite this table.
AV-Comparatives, business security test, March–April 2026
AV-Comparatives’ March–April 2026 business security factsheet tests products on Windows 11 64-bit. Its approval criteria are the most useful checklist for evaluating any product:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- At least 90% in the Malware Protection Test.
- Zero false alarms on common business software.
- A false-positive rate on non-business files below its “Remarkably High” threshold.
These are pass criteria for the test, not a verdict that any single product is best. Zero false alarms on common business software matters because a blocked line-of-business application is a production outage, which is why the business test weighs it differently from a consumer review.

Consumer free editions and commercial use
Consumer free antivirus products such as Avast Free and AVG AntiVirus Free are aimed at personal use. Their business-use permission has to come from the vendor’s current license text, not from their popularity or from the free price. Until a vendor’s terms explicitly allow business use on your devices, do not deploy a consumer edition across an organization. Paid business editions from the same vendors are licensed separately, and that is the version the business tests above evaluate.
How to verify licensing and support before deploying
- Identify the exact product and edition. Write down the name as it appears on the license, such as “Defender for Business” or “Business Security Enterprise,” and do not substitute a consumer product name.
- Read the license for business use. Look for explicit commercial-use language in the vendor’s license or product terms. If the text is silent or limits use to personal devices, treat the product as not free for business.
- Count devices, users, and servers. Compare your numbers with the limits in the product’s terms, including the five-concurrent-device rule and the 300-user cap for Defender for Business, and confirm that server workloads have their own license.
- Check the test date. Match any test result you rely on to the same edition and Windows version, and recheck the lab’s current listings if the date is old.
- Confirm support and response features in writing. Ask the vendor which administration, reporting, and incident-response capabilities are included in your edition, because the sources reviewed here do not provide a full feature matrix for every product.
- Pilot against your own software. Run a small group of machines with your line-of-business applications before a fleet rollout, and watch for false alarms that would interrupt work.

Quick Recap
Choosing a path
| Situation | Starting point supported by the sources | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Single PC or very small team with no central management needs | Defender Antivirus included with Windows 10 or 11 | Real-time protection is on and the mode shown by Get-MpComputerStatus is what you expect |
| Small or medium business up to 300 users wanting a managed Microsoft product | Defender for Business, a licensed product | Current price, regional availability, and the five-concurrent-device and 300-user limits |
| Servers in the environment | Server licensing is separate, per the Defender for Business FAQ | Whether each server instance has the required license; the FAQ lists $3 per server instance for the add-on |
| Larger enterprise or broader management needs | Licensed business editions of the kind tested by AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives | Edition, licensing, and management capabilities, because the sources do not provide a full feature comparison |
| Any consumer free edition | Not recommended for business deployment | Explicit commercial-use permission in the vendor’s current terms |
