For many organizations, the most defensible no-additional-Google-cost starting point is Android Enterprise’s built-in controls and Google Play Protect. A free consumer app is not automatically licensed for company devices or manageable across a fleet.
What “free antivirus for enterprise” needs to mean
A business needs more than an app that can be downloaded without charge. Before deploying protection to company-owned phones or employee BYOD devices, check three separate questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Price and commercial rights: Is the product free for organizational use, or only for personal, non-commercial use? Does business deployment require a license?
- Administration: Can IT enforce settings, see relevant alerts, and manage the app through a vendor console or the organization’s enterprise mobility management (EMM) system?
- Coverage and privacy: What threats does it address, which Android versions and devices are supported, and what can administrators see on a personally owned device?
These questions are not interchangeable: a free app may lack fleet management, while a management service or business security product may require a paid subscription.
Start with Android Enterprise and Play Protect
Android Enterprise provides operating-system features for business deployments, including work-profile separation of work and personal data, Managed Google Play app allowlists and blocklists, device-trust signals, and integrations with security partners. Google describes these built-in enterprise features as available without additional cost from Google, and its FAQ describes Android Enterprise as built into standard Android 5.0 or later. That does not make an organization’s EMM console or third-party security services free; many organizations use a management console from an enterprise solution provider.

Google Play Protect is the directly documented baseline for app safety in this material. Google says it scans apps from Google Play and periodically checks installed apps, including apps installed by sideloading or through an EMM. In an EMM deployment, an administrator can enforce that Play Protect is enabled and receive notifications when it detects a potentially harmful app.
That makes Play Protect useful as part of an Android security plan, not proof that every organization’s needs are covered. The documentation described here does not establish Play Protect as a replacement for every paid mobile threat-defense product or for an organization’s broader device-management controls.

How the free and business options compare
| Option | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Android Enterprise built-in features and Google Play Protect | Google says Android Enterprise’s built-in features are available without additional cost from Google. Play Protect scans apps, including sideloaded and EMM-installed apps; an EMM can enforce it and receive potentially harmful app notifications. | This does not establish that an external EMM subscription or a third-party security service is free. |
| Sophos Intercept X for Mobile, unmanaged app | Sophos says its free app can be downloaded and used on Android without management. | Free unmanaged use does not establish free central administration for a business fleet. |
| Sophos managed deployment | Sophos says managed business use requires a license and management through Sophos Central/Sophos Mobile. Its administrator documentation also describes management on devices enrolled in third-party EMM software. | The cited guidance does not establish a free managed business tier. |
| Avast consumer free antivirus | Avast’s small-office guidance says its consumer free antivirus and certain other consumer products are for private, personal, non-commercial use; it directs organizations to Avast Business. | It is not a substantiated corporate-use recommendation without a suitable business license and review of current terms. |
| AVG free Android antivirus | AVG advertises a free Android antivirus app, and its support FAQ says the free version includes third-party ads. | The reviewed AVG material does not establish commercial-use rights or centrally managed fleet deployment. |
Product terms and features can change. The distinctions in this table reflect vendor material reviewed on October 7, 2026; check current terms, supported devices, and regional availability before deployment.
Which option fits your deployment?
Company-owned devices managed by IT
Use Android Enterprise and an EMM to set device and app policies, then confirm whether the EMM can enforce Play Protect and surface its alerts. If adding a third-party antivirus or threat-defense app, verify that the business license permits the intended deployment and that administrators can manage it through the chosen console.

BYOD phones with a work profile
Prioritize work/personal separation and make the employee privacy boundary clear. Confirm which work-profile apps and settings IT can control, what alerts administrators receive, and whether the security product operates on work data, the whole device, or both. Do not assume a consumer antivirus app offers an appropriate or centrally managed BYOD configuration.
A small team looking for a no-cost starting point
Begin by checking the Android Enterprise capabilities and Play Protect controls available through the organization’s existing setup. Treat a free, unmanaged app such as Sophos Intercept X for Mobile as a separate user-installed option, not as a centrally managed fleet solution. If your requirements include central administration, obtain the vendor’s business licensing and deployment terms before rollout.

Why this is not a verified “top seven” list
Consumer antivirus roundups can help identify apps to investigate, but they do not establish that an app is licensed for business use, centrally manageable at no cost, or equivalent to another product in enterprise protection. The consumer candidates named in the reviewed roundups include Avast, AVG, Sophos, Avira, and McAfee; the available evidence does not verify seven free enterprise-ready products or provide a comparable enterprise malware-detection test.
Recommended Free Tools
For each candidate your organization considers, verify these points with the vendor before adoption:
Best Value
- Android Security & protection
- Daily Virus Database checkup and updates
- Scan Apps and Files
- System Cleaner Integrated
- Virtual Private Network (VPN)
- Whether organizational, nonprofit, or government use is permitted by the exact license.
- Whether a separate business license is required, and what management features that license includes.
- Whether administrators can manage the app through the vendor console or the EMM already in use.
- Whether it supports your Android versions, device models, deployment mode, and region.
- Which protections it actually supplies, such as app-malware detection, phishing or web-threat controls, or device-trust checks.
- For BYOD, what information is collected and visible to administrators, and how work and personal data are separated.
Because the reviewed sources do not provide a consistent enterprise scorecard, there is no sound basis here to rank seven products by protection effectiveness. Choose based on verified licensing, management fit, and the specific controls your organization needs.
