If you want to watch, listen to, or download YouTube media without using the conventional YouTube website in a browser, graphical clients offer several different approaches. The LinuxLinks page available on April 21, 2026 lists 25 tools—not 29—and groups together standalone viewers, music players, and download interfaces. Treat the list as a starting point, not a verified ranking: the page’s descriptions do not establish which projects still work, which systems they support, or whether they are maintained.
Why the title says 29 while the accessible article lists 25
LinuxLinks has an indexed edition titled “29 Best Free and Open Source Graphical YouTube Tools Bypassing the Web-Only Barrier,” dated September 25, 2026. The accessible LinuxLinks page is dated April 21, 2026, titled “25 Best Free and Open Source Graphical YouTube Tools Bypassing the Web-Only Barrier,” and lists 25 tools. It says the article was updated after a recent announcement, but the accessible content does not explain the difference in counts. This article summarizes the 25 entries visible on that page; the count and list should not be read as a verified current catalog. LinuxLinks’ accessible roundup.

Choose by what you want to do
The roundup combines three jobs that are easy to confuse: watching videos in a separate client, listening to music, and downloading media. Start with the job you need, then check the project’s own documentation for supported systems, setup requirements, and current status before installing.
Watch videos in a separate client
FreeTube is described as a privacy-based YouTube app. pipe-viewer is presented as a lightweight client that does not require an API key. Piped uses NewPipe Extractor, while Materialious is described as a frontend for YouTube and Invidious. Minitube is listed as a way to watch YouTube without Flash. Other viewing-oriented entries include Pipeline, which supports YouTube and PeerTube; PlasmaTube, designed for KDE Plasma integration; PsTube, built with Flutter; Youwee, built with Tauri and React; and VacuumTube, an unofficial YouTube Leanback wrapper. These are the roundup’s brief descriptions, not independent confirmation of features or compatibility.

Rank #2
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Look for a frontend’s dependencies
A graphical interface does not necessarily do all the work itself. The roundup describes Media Downloader as a frontend for tools including youtube-dl, gallery-dl, Lux, you-get, svtplay-dl, and aria2c. It also identifies NeoDLP, Pulsar, and ytdl-gui as yt-dlp-based or yt-dlp interfaces. Before installing, check whether the project requires a separate downloader, extractor, or other component, and whether it provides or expects you to install that dependency.

What to verify before you install
- Operating-system support: The roundup does not provide a reliable tool-by-tool compatibility matrix. Check the project’s current installation instructions for your operating system and desktop environment.
- Maintenance and working status: The short descriptions do not establish whether a project is actively maintained or currently able to access YouTube. Review recent releases, issue activity, and project notices; do not assume an entry still works because it appears in a roundup.
- License: LinuxLinks frames the tools as free and open source, but the accessible article does not independently substantiate the current license for each project. Confirm licensing on the project’s own repository or documentation.
- Privacy and account handling: A separate graphical client is not, by itself, proof of a particular privacy practice. Look for clear project documentation about data collection, sign-in, and any service or proxy it uses.
- Dependencies: Check whether the app bundles or requires command-line downloaders, extraction libraries, or other software, and how those components are updated.
The practical way to narrow the list
- Pick the task. Choose a viewer for watching, a music client for listening, or a downloader if saving media is your goal.
- Filter by your system. Use the project’s own documentation to confirm availability for your operating system and desktop environment; the roundup alone does not establish support.
- Check requirements and status. Review installation steps, dependencies, recent maintenance, and any account or privacy disclosures before you commit to an app.
- Test with the content you actually use. Confirm that the client handles the relevant YouTube content and playback or download workflow; the roundup does not report comparative testing or performance.
