You can build a free graphics toolkit around GIMP for image editing, Inkscape for vector illustration, and Scribus for page layout. But calling that a like-for-like replacement would overpromise: the tools serve different jobs, and the available evidence does not establish that they preserve every Adobe workflow or file perfectly. Whether one feels like a downgrade depends on the work you do and the files you need to exchange.
Three different jobs need three different tools
Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign overlap in places, but they are built around distinct kinds of work: manipulating images, creating vector artwork, and laying out pages. A useful free toolkit should match those jobs rather than expect one app to replace the whole suite.

| Workflow | Free app to consider | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Photo manipulation and image composition | GIMP | The GIMP Project describes it as a free program for photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. That makes it a candidate for image work, not proof of Photoshop feature parity. GIMP Project overview |
| Vector illustration | Inkscape | Inkscape is a free, open-source vector editor whose main format is SVG. Its overview lists import and export support for formats including AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG; that does not guarantee exact round-tripping of every document. Inkscape overview |
| Multi-page layout | Scribus | Scribus is a plausible free counterpart for page layout, but current official feature, compatibility, and release details are not established here. Confirm that it supports your required print workflow before relying on it. |
Where the replacement may feel like a downgrade
There is no universal answer to which app feels worse. The practical test is whether your regular tasks, files, and handoffs work without the capabilities or workflow you rely on. A free alternative can cover the broad category of work yet still differ in specific tools, file behavior, collaboration, or output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Task coverage: List the operations you actually use in each Adobe app, then check that the replacement handles those operations—not just the general category.
- File compatibility: Open representative source files, inspect the result, make edits, and export them. If colleagues or clients need editable files, test the handoff in their software too.
- Print and delivery: For page-layout work, validate your actual export and production requirements with the printer or recipient. Do not infer current Scribus print capabilities from its role as a layout candidate.
- Platform and hardware: Check that the app runs on your operating system and handles your usual project sizes and input devices.
- Learning and collaboration: Account for changed terminology, workflows, and the tools other people on your team use.
- Cost: Compare the value of the free tools with the local price and plan terms for the Adobe apps you would otherwise use. Adobe’s plans vary by market; check the current options for your region rather than treating one market’s price as global. Adobe Creative Cloud plans
Check file interchange instead of assuming it
Format support means an app can work with a format to some degree; it does not establish that every layer, effect, font, or other document detail will survive opening, editing, and saving. Inkscape’s documented support for AI and PDF is useful, but test the files that matter to you. Keep the original files until you have confirmed the complete workflow.

The same caution applies to PSD. Krita’s feature page lists PSD loading and saving alongside painting tools, animation, vector and text tools, layer types, color management, and scripting. PSD support alone does not show that it is a drop-in substitute for general-purpose photo compositing or that it preserves every PSD feature. Krita features

Krita for painting and illustration
Krita is worth considering when painting is central to your work. Its feature list includes customizable workspaces, brushes, animation, and PSD loading and saving. Its download page lists version 5.3.4, released September 15, 2026, and says 4 GB of RAM is the minimum and 16 GB is recommended. It also says any graphics tablet compatible with your operating system can be used. These details are specific to the page and release information currently listed there; check the page for changes before installing. Krita download and system requirements

Photopea for browser-based editing
Photopea describes itself as a free online photo editor that runs in a browser. It says files stay on the user’s device rather than uploading, and lists PSD support along with layers, masks, adjustment layers, paths, vector editing, and other formats. Those are vendor statements, not independent verification. If privacy or offline access matters, assess the service’s current behavior and your own setup before using it for sensitive work. Photopea official page
A practical way to decide whether to switch
- Choose representative projects. Pick a photo-editing job, a vector document, and a multi-page layout that reflect your normal work, including any files you exchange with others.
- Map each project to its app. Try GIMP for image manipulation, Inkscape for vector illustration, and Scribus as the page-layout candidate. For digital painting, consider Krita; for browser-based image editing, consider Photopea.
- Recreate the important operations. Work through the edits, effects, typography, and exports you depend on. Note missing capabilities and awkward steps rather than judging by the first screen.
- Test round-trips and handoffs. Open the source files, save a working copy, export the deliverable, and have the intended recipient check it if possible.
- Decide by workflow, not app count. Keep an Adobe app if a critical task or exchange fails; switch only the parts of your workflow that the free tools reliably cover.
What to conclude from the comparison
GIMP and Inkscape have clearly described roles as image-manipulation and vector-editing tools. Scribus is a reasonable layout candidate, but current official documentation for its capabilities and release status is not established here, so verify it against your needs. No independent usability or performance comparison establishes that this trio is equivalent to Adobe’s apps—or that only one is a downgrade. The answer depends on your own tasks and tested files.
