Choose by the kind of editing you do
Photoshop-style work centers on editing pixels, combining layers and composing images. Lightroom-style work centers on developing camera RAW files and managing a photo workflow. Those needs overlap, but they are not the same job. A free setup may mean using one editor for composition and another for RAW development.

GIMP is free/libre software for photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. The project lists versions for GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows, and describes the software as extensible through third-party plugins. That makes it a practical first choice when your main need is hands-on desktop image editing rather than an all-in-one Lightroom-style catalog workflow. What GIMP does—and what not to assume
GIMP is a capable route for layer-based pixel editing and composition, but the available information does not establish that it duplicates every Photoshop capability. Nor does it establish that GIMP itself offers Lightroom’s catalog workflow. Treat it as an editor with its own workflow, not as a one-for-one Adobe clone.
Version details matter: GIMP 3.2 release notes dated March 14, 2026, highlight non-destructive layers and vector layers, while the official homepage reports GIMP 3.2.6 released September 10, 2026. These are version-specific additions; they do not make every GIMP operation non-destructive. Check the project’s GIMP 3.2 release notes and official site for the version currently available.

For camera RAW files, pair GIMP with a RAW processor
Camera RAW files usually need development before they are ready for detailed pixel editing. GIMP’s FAQ names darktable and RawTherapee as RAW-processing plugins. A sensible division of labor is to develop the RAW image in one of those tools, then open the resulting image in GIMP for retouching or composition.

This is a practical combination, not evidence of Lightroom parity. The available sources do not establish matching catalog features or a complete feature-by-feature comparison with Lightroom. If organizing and managing a large photo library is central to your workflow, verify that a specific app meets that need before switching.

Canva is worth considering when you want to make quick edits online or combine a photo with design work. Its vendor describes the photo editor as free and says you can upload PSD files and continue working on them. That supports browser access and PSD upload; it does not establish that every design extra, feature or export option is included without charge. Review Canva’s photo editor page and its current terms for the details that matter to your project.

How to decide before moving your workflow
- List the work you actually do. Separate layer-based retouching and compositing from RAW development and photo-library organization.
- Pick a tool for each job. Try GIMP for desktop composition, darktable or RawTherapee for RAW processing, or Canva for browser-based edits and design work.
- Check your file needs. If PSD upload or camera RAW handling is essential, confirm that the particular tool and workflow support your files; the available sources do not prove universal compatibility.
- Check the current free tier. Confirm account requirements and any feature or export limits on the vendor’s own pages before building a workflow around them.
