1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA free AI tier is a set of access rules, capacity limits, data practices, and upgrade paths—not a promise of unlimited or production-ready service. To judge whether one fits, identify the exact product (consumer chat or developer API), check its current limits and privacy terms, and trace what happens when a limit is reached or billing is enabled.
Start by identifying the exact free service
Record the provider, product surface, model or model family, account type, region, and date you checked. Consumer chat and developer APIs are separate services: their access rules, limits, billing, and data terms may differ. For example, Anthropic distinguishes its consumer Claude policy from its commercial and API arrangements, while Google documents separate free and paid Gemini API services. See Anthropic’s consumer data policy, its API retention documentation, and Google’s Gemini API billing guide.

Also note that “free” describes price, not a stable quota or service guarantee. The ChatGPT Free plan page describes access but does not establish one universal numeric quota. The ChatGPT Free Tier FAQ says feature tools can have separate usage limits, and the product displays reset timing when a limit is reached.

Map access and capacity, not just a headline quota
For the precise service you plan to use, list which models and features are included and what can constrain use. A single request count may not capture separate limits for tokens, images, audio, tools, or context. Record the limit’s scope—such as user, project, workspace, or organization—and where the account displays current status, reset timing, or retry guidance.

API limits are not the same as consumer-chat allowances. OpenAI’s API rate-limit documentation describes multiple metrics and says limits vary by model and organization or project. It lists a $100/month usage limit for Free-tier API users in an allowed geography; that is API-tier information, not a ChatGPT consumer-plan allowance. Check the documentation and account controls applicable to your own geography and project.
Anthropic’s Claude API rate-limit documentation likewise describes API-specific limits. It cautions: “All limits described here represent maximum allowed usage, not guaranteed minimums.” A published maximum therefore should not be treated as guaranteed throughput.
Plan for what happens when you hit a limit
Limits shape runtime behavior. A request may pause until a reset or retry time, fail because a particular metric has been exhausted, or require a change in account or billing status. Short bursts can also reach a rate control even when longer-term usage appears within bounds. For a service you depend on, find the provider’s stated error and retry behavior, then decide what your application or workflow should do: wait, queue work, show a clear message, or stop rather than repeatedly retrying.
Do not infer continuous availability from a quota ceiling. Anthropic explicitly describes its API figures as maximum allowed usage rather than a minimum guarantee. Provider documentation describes limits and controls; it does not establish whether a particular workload will meet your latency or reliability needs.

Check data handling for the same product surface
Before entering sensitive material, establish whether prompts or outputs may be used to improve models, which settings control that use, whether deletion is available, how long data is retained, and what exceptions apply. Do not assume that an API policy applies to a consumer chatbot—or vice versa.
Anthropic’s consumer policy says deleted Claude conversations disappear from chat history immediately and are deleted from backend storage systems within 30 days. If a consumer user allows chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, data may remain in de-identified form in model-training pipelines for up to five years. The policy says this treatment applies to new or resumed conversations after the setting is enabled. Those statements concern consumer Claude; Anthropic documents API data retention separately in its API policy.
Google also documents different data-use treatment for Gemini API services when billing is enabled. Review the current Gemini API billing documentation for the service and account state you intend to use rather than carrying assumptions over from consumer Gemini.

Billing can change more than the price. Before linking a payment method or upgrading, check which limits change, whether a prepaid balance is required, how spending is controlled, and what happens at a cap. Google’s current Gemini API billing guide describes new accounts as starting on a model-specific free tier; access to the paid tier requires linking billing and prepaying. The guide describes a $5 minimum credit setup for completing that flow. These are details of the documented account path, not a universal rule for every AI service, and terms or eligibility may change.

- 【Everything stays local on your phone and device】— No cloud, no WiFi needed. The offline engine runs anywhere without internet, so this lecture recorder or meeting recorder keeps confidential talks exactly where they belong — private and under your control.
- 【Five omnidirectional microphones plus a bone conduction sensor】— Capture both room audio and phone call voices with precision. The built-in AI labels up to 8 speakers in transcripts so you always know who said what, even in noisy spots like trains, airports, or busy cafes.
- 【At just 30 grams and smaller than a car key】— This smart recorder slips into any pocket or clips onto a lanyard. It holds 1,000+ hours of recordings on 64GB storage and runs up to 55 hours on a single charge, so you can record lectures, interviews, or meetings all day without worrying about battery.
- 【A versatile voice recorder with AI that covers 126 languages】For real-time translation and speech-to-text. Use it for class notes, job interviews, warehouse walkthroughs, or quick health check-ins — one pocket-sized tool that adapts to whatever you need to capture.
Write down what will pause or continue if a free allowance runs out, if billing is linked, and if a paid cap is reached. For an app, make sure the account’s spend controls and failure behavior match the way the app handles user requests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare options against the workload you actually have
When assessing two or more services, compare the same dimensions rather than relying on a single “free quota” figure:
- Access: Which models and features are available, and is the offer for chat or API use?
- Capacity: Which request, token, tool, or other limits apply; what is their scope; and how are resets and bursts handled?
- Data: What use, opt-out, deletion, and retention rules apply to this specific product and account?
- Operations: What errors or pauses can occur, what spend controls exist, and are limits ceilings rather than throughput guarantees?
- Transition: What billing steps, eligibility rules, and policy or limit changes apply when moving to paid access?
Then measure a representative workload under the account conditions you expect to use. A free tier can be a useful way to explore certain models and interfaces. Whether it can support an app depends on the app’s actual throughput, latency, privacy, reliability, and spending requirements; plan pages alone cannot establish that fit.
What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you
Some provider figures are useful only with their specific context attached. Anthropic’s 30-day and up-to-five-year retention periods concern consumer Claude data under the stated deletion and model-improvement conditions. Google’s $5 minimum concerns a documented Gemini API paid-tier billing flow. OpenAI’s $100/month figure concerns Free-tier API users in an allowed geography. They describe different products and kinds of limits, so they are not directly comparable. Consumer quotas can also vary by model, feature, account, and region; check the current in-product status and applicable account terms rather than relying on a third-party estimate.
