Free AI Limits Explained: What Nine Services Disclose—and What They Don’t

When a free AI service says “you’ve reached your limit,” the message may not tell you when access returns—or whether you could have predicted the stop. In a report dated 29 September 2026, A. F. Sadek compared the free plans of ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, DeepSeek, Copilot, Claude, Grok, Perplexity and Mistral Vibe. The report’s central finding: none publishes a numeric cap for free chat messages. That is a dated finding from the report, not an independently repeated audit of every provider page.

What does “no published cap” actually mean?

A numeric free-chat cap would tell you how many ordinary messages you can send in a stated period—for example, a stated number per day. Sadek’s report says it found no such published number for the free chat messages of the nine services it compared. That does not mean the services have no limits; it means the report did not find a public number answering how many free chat messages a user can send.

The distinction matters because product pages can disclose limits for particular tools without setting a cap for ordinary conversation. A file-upload allowance or a research-query quota answers a different question. Likewise, knowing when a limit resets does not tell you how many messages you receive before it applies.

Which kinds of limits can you actually identify?

What a service discloses What you can learn What remains unanswered
A numeric quota for a specific tool The stated allowance for that tool, if the information is current and applies to your plan. How many ordinary chat messages are available.
A reset interval without a count When the stated limit may renew. How much you can use before reaching it.
Qualitative wording such as “limited” or “generous limits” That some restriction may apply. A dependable stopping point or an exact allowance.
No applicable public figure found Only that the consulted source did not settle the question at that scope. Whether there is a cap, what it is, and when it resets.

As examples of tool-specific quotas, Sadek’s report lists three file uploads a day for ChatGPT and three Perplexity Pro Searches a day plus one Research query a month. These are the report’s dated claims, not independently confirmed current allowances here; check the providers’ official pages before relying on them. They do not establish a free-chat message cap.

Why isn’t “unknown” the same as “unlimited”?

A missing number is not evidence of unlimited access. A provider may enforce a limit without publishing a fixed allowance, may describe only a reset period, or may change access according to conditions not captured by a public quota. The report uses “unknown” for a field where its authors say they searched but found no source that settled the question at the required scope.

Scope is another common source of confusion. A page describing a feature across a whole product does not, by itself, confirm that the feature is available on the free plan. A plan comparison and a feature-help page may also differ in what they cover; the report flags a discrepancy between Perplexity’s plan table and image-generation help article as an example. Treat a feature’s existence and its free-tier availability as separate questions.

Can high demand change free access?

Yes, at least for some Gemini features. Google’s official Gemini Apps help documentation says that features requiring more compute, including Deep Research, may be unavailable to people without a Google AI plan during high demand. It also says free-plan limits may be constrained before subscriber limits when capacity changes. This is a specific statement about Gemini, not proof that every provider handles capacity the same way.

Capacity-sensitive access makes a fixed, public message count an incomplete guide even where one is available: a feature can become temporarily unavailable under stated conditions. Check whether a provider’s notice describes a quota, a reset, or availability that can vary with demand; they are not interchangeable.

How should you check a limit before switching services?

  1. Identify the surface and feature. Check whether you mean ordinary chat, a particular tool, the web experience, a mobile app or an API. Sadek’s comparison does not establish that limits behave identically across app, web and API.
  2. Look for a free-plan-specific statement. A general product page or a feature description may not confirm free-tier access. Prefer an official plan or help page that names the relevant plan and feature.
  3. Separate the count from the reset. Record a stated allowance and its time period separately from any reset interval. A reset schedule alone is not a message count.
  4. Check the date and conditions. Plan details can change. Note when the provider page was checked and whether it mentions region, demand or other conditions; recheck before relying on a figure.
  5. Keep “not stated” as an unknown. If the official page gives no applicable number, do not infer unlimited use or borrow a quota from a different tool or plan.

Sadek says the comparison preserves dated copies of official pages and is based mainly on provider sources; the author reports preserving and timestamping 70 pages. Those methodological details describe the report, not an independent count or verification here. Its comparison is explicitly a snapshot as of 29 September 2026, so it should not be treated as a live guarantee of any provider’s current terms.
