What kind of day does each museum offer?

The Franklin Institute: a science-centered visit

General admission includes three floors of interactive exhibits, Fels Planetarium shows, live science programs and access to the Holt-Miller Observatory when weather permits. That mix makes it a strong choice when your family wants science activities and demonstrations rather than a museum built primarily around role-play. See the official visit page for current admission details and planning information.

Please Touch Museum: play-led exploration

Please Touch centers its experience on interactive play and imaginative role-play, with environments aimed at infants, toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary-age children. Visit Philadelphia describes six interactive exhibit zones across 157,000 square feet, including four areas designed for children three and younger. Examples include a supermarket role-play area, a mini Delaware River boat, Nature’s Pond and a fairytale garden. The museum’s FAQ says it is generally best for children about six months through age eight. Please Touch age guidance; Visit Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum overview.

How to choose for children of different ages

  • Mostly babies, toddlers or preschoolers: Please Touch is the more directly age-targeted choice, with play environments for those stages and its stated general age range extending through age eight.
  • School-age children keen on science: The Franklin Institute’s exhibits, planetarium and live science programming align naturally with a science-centered outing. Its visit information does not give an official best-age band, so consider your child’s interests rather than assuming a specific age cutoff.
  • A wide age spread: Think about which activities will hold the attention of both the oldest and youngest children. The Franklin Institute offers broad-audience science experiences; Please Touch focuses its environments on younger children. Neither museum’s published age guidance guarantees that every child in a sibling group will enjoy the same activities.

Compare the real cost, not just the headline ticket

At the Franklin Institute, the listed general-admission price depends on age, and special exhibits add $15–$20 per ticket. Decide whether a special exhibit is part of your plans before estimating the family total. The institute also lists $2 PA ACCESS admission per person for up to four people, along with membership, group-pricing and CityPASS options; eligibility and terms apply. Check the visit page and ticket information for current details.

Please Touch lists general admission at $24 per adult or child and separate reduced categories for military, firefighters and police, Association of Children’s Museums members, out-of-state EBT and ACCESS visitors. Its FAQ says qualifying ACM members may receive 50% off up to six tickets with proof of membership and ID. Confirm current eligibility and offers with the visit page and FAQ.

Check the calendar and plan getting there

The Franklin Institute lists daily hours of 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. and recommends advance tickets to skip lines. It also notes that weekday group visits are heavier before 2 p.m., suggesting after 2 p.m. for a more relaxed weekday experience. Its address is 222 N. 20th Street. The institute lists an on-site garage at 271 North 21st Street, but the current garage rate is not stated on the visit information reviewed; verify the cost and availability before driving. It is closed Mondays and Tuesdays; Wednesday through Saturday hours are 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Sunday hours vary: the first, fourth and fifth Sundays are listed as 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., while the second and third Sundays begin at 11 a.m. The museum says event exceptions and holiday hours are posted. Its directions page lists free on-street parking and a gated museum lot for $20, with limited spaces. Reservations are encouraged for visitors and members age 12 months and older, though tickets can also be purchased at the admissions desk. Check the visit page, FAQ and directions page for the date you have in mind.

Exhibits and events can be temporary. For example, Please Touch listed PAW Patrol: Adventure Play for October 7, 2026–January 3, 2027; that dated listing should not be treated as a permanent exhibit. Check the museum calendar for what will be available on your visit date. Please Touch visit information.

Compare accessibility features to your family’s needs

Both museums publish accessibility information, but a general accessibility statement is not a substitute for checking the specific support your family needs.

  • Franklin Institute: The institute lists accessible entrances, a limited number of courtesy wheelchairs, sensory backpacks with noise-reducing headphones and other tools, and no-cost personal care attendants for visitors with severe disabilities. ASL interpreters are subject to availability and require a request at least three weeks ahead. Details are on its accessibility page.
  • Please Touch: The museum lists stroller access throughout, wheelchair access across both floors, a limited number of free adult wheelchairs, free Quiet Kits, Quiet Zones and sensory guidance. Play Without Boundaries is a separately scheduled sensory-friendly event; check its dates and ticketing because general admission may begin later on those mornings.
