France drew 1-1 with Italy in the UEFA Nations League at Stade de France on 2 October 2026, denying Zinedine Zidane a win in his first home match as France coach. Michael Olise put France ahead with a curling second-half strike, but Alessandro Bastoni equalized after a French defensive error.
How France and Italy drew 1-1
France took the lead in the 55th minute. After Rayan Cherki took a short free kick, Michael Olise curled a shot from around 20 metres that struck the crossbar on its way in, according to The Independent’s match report.

Italy levelled in the 68th minute. Alessandro Bastoni scored after a French defensive error, with Adrien Rabiot involved in the mistake, according to FotMob’s match coverage. Neither side added another goal, leaving the Nations League match at 1-1.
Why the result mattered for Zidane
The draw came in Zidane’s first home match in charge of France, at Stade de France. He had begun his tenure with away fixtures, but the available match reports do not establish an exact record for those games. The 1-1 result meant his home debut ended without a victory.

What Zidane said after the match
At his post-match press conference, Zidane said, as quoted in Spanish by AS: “Estoy contento de lo que vi. No por el resultado. Creo que merecimos más. Así es el fútbol. Tuvimos ocasiones para marcar el segundo, no lo hicimos y a veces pasan estas cosas en el campo. Muy orgulloso de mis jugadores y de todo lo que han hecho. Estoy contento pese al resultado”. In English, he said he was happy with what he saw but not the result, felt France deserved more, and was proud of his players despite the draw. Le Monde separately reported him as “very disappointed” not to win his home debut; that is reported speech rather than a verified verbatim English quotation.
