Short answer: the Framework Laptop 12 has a 50Wh battery, but that capacity does not tell you how many hours it will run. Framework documents upgradeable memory and storage, four swappable Expansion Card bays, user-replaceable battery access, and support for MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0 pens. The exact limits depend on whether you have the original 13th-generation Intel configuration or the newer Core Series 3 model, so identify the generation before buying memory, planning displays, or choosing a card.
Start by identifying your Framework Laptop 12 generation
Framework has published Laptop 12 information for two materially different configurations: an original 13th-generation Intel model and a newer Core Series 3 model. They share the modular chassis concept, but port bandwidth, display connectivity and memory specifications are not identical.

How long does the Framework Laptop 12 battery last?
Framework lists a 50Wh battery for the Laptop 12. That is an energy-capacity specification, not a promised runtime. Framework’s own wording is explicit: “The stated Watt Hour (50Wh) is not an indication of battery life.” Runtime changes with processor choice, memory and SSD configuration, display brightness, wireless activity, applications, operating-system settings, temperature and battery age.

What Framework’s current test actually establishes
For the newer Core Series 3 configuration, Framework describes a July 2026 test using a Core 5 320 processor, 16GB of RAM, a WD SN5000S 512GB SSD, 150-nit display brightness, Wi-Fi enabled, Best Power Efficiency mode and Netflix 4K video playback. The retrieved product-page text explains those conditions and warns that real-world life can be lower, but it does not expose the test’s numerical hour result. There is therefore no defensible Laptop 12 hour figure to quote from that material.
This distinction matters when you compare listings. A result from a video-loop test is not equivalent to a productivity benchmark, and neither predicts the same hours during compiling, gaming, video calls or high-brightness outdoor use. Treat the Framework test as a defined workload, not as a universal promise.
Why an older 10–11-hour figure should not be applied
Framework’s general battery-support article reports 10–11 hours from a 2022 MobileMark 2018 benchmark, but that result belongs to a different Framework Laptop configuration. It is not evidence for Laptop 12 and should not be used as its expected runtime.
How to evaluate a battery claim before buying
- Confirm the exact Laptop 12 generation and processor.
- Check whether the stated result is a laboratory loop, an office benchmark or a mixed-use estimate.
- Match brightness, wireless status and power mode to how you intend to use the computer.
- Look for the memory, SSD and display configuration used in the test.
- Expect maximum runtime to decline as the battery accumulates recharge cycles.
For a practical purchase decision, ask the seller or listing for the configuration behind any quoted number. If it does not identify the workload and settings, treat the figure as an estimate rather than a comparable measurement.
What ports and Expansion Cards does Laptop 12 have?
The Laptop 12 has four simultaneous Expansion Card bays, with two on each side. Cards are removable, so you can arrange connectivity around a particular trip or desk instead of carrying a permanent hub.
| Card type named by Framework | Typical reason to choose it |
|---|---|
| USB-A | Existing keyboards, mice, flash drives and other legacy peripherals |
| USB-C | Modern peripherals, charging convenience and a spare USB-C connection |
| HDMI | Direct connection to common televisions, projectors and monitors |
| DisplayPort | DisplayPort-equipped monitors and docks |
| MicroSD | Camera, recorder and other removable-media workflows |
| Ethernet | Wired networking where Wi-Fi is unsuitable |
| Storage | Framework lists 250GB and 1TB storage-card options |
The built-in 3.5mm audio jack means many users do not need to spend an Expansion Card bay on headphones. Charging works through USB-C from any of the four bays. Framework recommends keeping at least one USB-C card installed because the dedicated charging connection inside the bay is recessed; a normal cable is easier to use when a USB-C card is present.

Generation-specific bandwidth and display limits
Do not describe all four positions as equivalent. Framework’s port matrix dated August 18, 2026 identifies Thunderbolt 4 on ports 1 and 3 of the Core Series 3 model. The 13th-generation Intel version is listed with USB 3.2 Gen 2 and DisplayPort 1.4a across its specified ports. That difference affects high-speed external storage, docks, multiple-display plans and peripherals that rely on Thunderbolt certification.
Before buying a dock or monitor, map the device to the actual port number and generation. A USB-C-shaped connector does not by itself guarantee Thunderbolt 4 bandwidth. Likewise, selecting an HDMI or DisplayPort card gives you a connector, but the usable resolution and refresh combination still depends on the laptop generation, the card and the display chain.
A sensible four-card layout
- Travel: one USB-C card for charging, one USB-A card for older accessories, and the remaining positions for the connector you use most.
- Desk setup: choose the display card or dock connection your monitor requires, retain USB-C for charging, and add Ethernet if wired networking matters.
- Photography: use MicroSD, USB-C and USB-A, leaving the fourth bay for storage or a display connection.
Can you upgrade the RAM and SSD?
Yes. Framework’s Laptop 12 specification lists one SO-DIMM memory slot and one M.2 2230 NVMe SSD slot. The product information presents memory, storage, ports and even the mainboard as upgradeable.
Memory: one slot means compatibility matters
Because there is a single SO-DIMM slot, the replacement module must match the generation’s supported memory type, speed and capacity. Framework indicates that the maximum capacity and supported speed differ between the 13th-generation Intel and Core Series 3 configurations. The exact values are not stated in the available specification extract, so verify them in the current Laptop 12 specification for your processor before ordering.
- Identify the processor generation first.
- Buy a DDR5 SO-DIMM that the generation-specific specification lists as supported.
- Check the module’s capacity against the stated maximum; do not infer the limit from another Framework model.
- Keep the original module until the upgraded system has completed a successful boot and memory check.
Storage: M.2 2230 is not the same as a full-length M.2 2280 drive
The listed SSD position is an M.2 2230 NVMe slot. Confirm both the 22-by-30-millimetre form factor and NVMe interface when selecting a replacement. A physically longer 2280 drive is not an interchangeable substitute simply because it is also an M.2 SSD.

Can you replace the Laptop 12 battery yourself?
Framework documents battery replacement as an Easy procedure. Its Laptop 12 guide contains 17 steps and estimates five to ten minutes using the Framework screwdriver with a T5 Torx bit. That is the manufacturer’s estimate, not an independent repair-time test.
What to prepare
- The correct replacement battery for your Laptop 12 generation.
- The Framework screwdriver with its T5 Torx bit.
- A clean, well-lit, static-conscious work surface.
- A backup of data and a fully shut-down laptop with external power disconnected.
How to approach the repair safely
- Open the current Laptop 12 battery-replacement guide and confirm that its part applies to your exact model.
- Shut down rather than merely suspending the computer, unplug the charger and remove accessories.
- Follow the guide’s 17 steps in order, keeping screws organized and using the specified driver bit.
- Handle the battery by its connector and casing; do not bend, puncture, crush or use a swollen or damaged pack.
- Install the replacement part from Framework’s documented parts channel, reconnect everything exactly as illustrated, and inspect the cable routing before closing the case.
- Boot the laptop, verify charging and check that the operating system recognizes the battery normally.
Battery cells wear through recharge cycles, so replacement is a maintenance option rather than a sign that the whole computer must be discarded. If the pack is swollen, hot, leaking or physically damaged, stop using the laptop and follow local battery-disposal guidance instead of attempting a routine swap.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which stylus works with Framework Laptop 12?
Framework lists support for the MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0 stylus protocols. A third-party pen should explicitly name one of those protocols; a generic capacitive stylus may touch the screen but will not provide the active-pen features expected from a compatible digitizer.
How to check a pen listing
- Look for “MPP 2.0” or “USI 2.0” in the technical specifications, not just “works with Windows” or “works with touchscreens.”
- Confirm whether the pen requires Bluetooth pairing, a replaceable battery or USB charging.
- Check included nibs and pressure or button features against your intended note-taking or drawing workflow.
- Verify return terms, since protocol labels are more reliable than a retailer’s broad compatibility headline.
Do not assume that an MPP 2.0 pen and a USI 2.0 pen are interchangeable across every software feature. The protocol named by the pen is the starting compatibility check; application behavior and operating-system support still matter.
Purchase and upgrade checklist
Use this sequence when evaluating a new or used Laptop 12:
- Record the generation: 13th-generation Intel or Core Series 3.
- Verify the port plan: identify which side and port number will carry displays, storage or a dock.
- Choose cards around real devices: reserve USB-C for convenient charging and select HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, MicroSD, USB-A or storage as needed.
- Confirm memory compatibility: use the generation-specific SO-DIMM speed and maximum listed in the current specification.
- Confirm SSD format: select an M.2 2230 NVMe drive, not a longer M.2 form factor.
- Price repairability correctly: include the cost and availability of the official replacement battery and parts, not just the initial laptop price.
- Match stylus protocol: buy a pen that explicitly supports MPP 2.0 or USI 2.0.
- Interpret battery claims cautiously: demand the workload, brightness, power mode and configuration behind any quoted runtime.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The 50Wh battery should last exactly X hours.”
Capacity is not runtime. Use a test with disclosed conditions and the same generation and workload instead.

What to verify on the current product page
Framework can revise configurations, firmware and parts availability. Before ordering or repairing, confirm the current specification for your processor generation, the port matrix, the compatible memory limits, the exact battery part and the latest repair instructions. That final check is especially important for used systems whose seller may have mixed a mainboard, memory module or Expansion Card from another configuration.
