Four University of Lausanne students have tested sheep-wool covers against a conventional synthetic glacier tarp at Glacier 3000 in Les Diablerets, Switzerland. After the first summer, the wool prototypes appeared to protect the ice about as well as the synthetic control, but the measurements are still being analysed. The trial is an encouraging materials experiment—not a solution to climate-driven glacier loss.
What the Swiss glacier experiment tested
The Keep It Wool project placed two wool geotextile prototypes on Glacier 3000 in the canton of Vaud on 22 June 2026. Each wool section covered 10 by 10 metres, or 100 square metres, and sat beside a same-size synthetic geotextile control. CleantechAlps reported wool densities of 400 grams per square metre and 750 grams per square metre.

Researchers monitored the covered areas with stakes and took measurements every two weeks through September. Initial field observations found the wool covers comparable to the conventional cover. The project team has not yet published the complete analysis, so the result should be treated as a preliminary first-season observation rather than a final performance claim.
Who carried out the trial
UNIL master’s students Maxime Galley, Elliot Gaffiot, Jose Bastidas and Léonard Duloube led the experiment. The work followed a 2025 partnership between the Summit Foundation and the University of Lausanne’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Mountain Research.

Fisolan AG manufactured the wool prototypes, while the Association Filature de l’Avançon connected the project with the wool sector. Glacier 3000 hosted the installation. GLAMOS researchers Mathias Huss and Mauro Fischer advised on the scientific design, and Innosuisse provided financial support.
Did wool work as well as a plastic glacier cover?
So far, the answer is “apparently comparable for one summer,” not “proven equivalent in every condition.” The official project description says the wool covers offered protection comparable to conventional geotextile after the 2026 summer season. CleantechAlps also reported only limited differences between the wool solutions and the synthetic cover.

That comparison matters because existing synthetic tarpaulins can reduce melting in covered areas by about 50% to 70%, according to 2026 reporting by SWI swissinfo.ch based on Keystone-SDA. The wool trial indicates that a natural fibre might deliver similar short-term shading and insulating performance, but it does not yet establish how the material behaves over multiple seasons.

Why replace synthetic glacier geotextiles?
Glacier protection textiles are generally made from polyester or polypropylene. Wind, precipitation and wear can detach fibres from these materials, releasing microplastics onto snow and ice. Those particles can be carried into mountain water and potentially enter food chains.

Wool offers a different material profile: it is renewable, biodegradable, naturally insulating and potentially sourced close to the glaciers where it is used. The Summit Foundation says up to 70% of Swiss wool is destroyed because sheep are mainly kept for meat, milk or landscape maintenance. Turning some of that underused fibre into protective geotextile could create a local use for a material that is currently discarded.
Those advantages do not automatically make wool the better engineering choice. A practical replacement must also withstand ultraviolet exposure, wind, rain, snow loading and repeated installation. It must be transportable, secure on steep ice and affordable to manufacture and replace. The 2026 experiment begins to address melt protection, but it does not yet provide published results for all of those tests.

How the project measured the covers
- Matched test areas: Researchers installed two 100 m² wool covers beside a same-size synthetic control, allowing local conditions to be compared.
- Stake measurements: Stakes in the covered areas tracked changes in the ice and snow surface.
- Repeated observations: Measurements were taken every two weeks from the 22 June installation through September.
- Seasonal comparison: The team compared the wool sections with the conventional geotextile after one summer of exposure.
This design can show whether the materials perform differently at the same site and during the same weather. It cannot, by itself, establish multi-year durability, performance at other glaciers or a full environmental footprint.

What the experiment does—and does not—mean for glacier loss
Protective covers are a targeted intervention, not a way to stop climate-driven retreat. The Summit Foundation reports that geotextiles cover about 0.02% of Switzerland’s glacier area and preserve approximately 300,000 cubic metres of snow each year. In the same project materials, nearly one billion cubic metres of Swiss glacier ice is reported lost annually.

The scale comparison explains why a successful wool cover would still have a limited national effect. Tarps can protect specific high-value or visitor-access areas, preserve snow for local operations and reduce melt during the warm season. They cannot reverse the energy imbalance driving widespread ice loss. The Summit Foundation identifies greenhouse-gas reduction as the main long-term lever for limiting glacier retreat.
What researchers still need to establish
A useful follow-up assessment would need to report results across several practical axes:
- Durability: whether wool survives wind, precipitation, ultraviolet exposure and handling for more than one season.
- Pollution: whether fibres are shed during use and how wool’s breakdown compares with synthetic fibre release.
- End of life: whether used covers can biodegrade safely or be reused and recycled.
- Logistics: the weight, anchoring requirements and installation effort at high altitude.
- Supply: whether enough suitable Swiss wool can be collected, cleaned and manufactured consistently.
- Economics and emissions: lifecycle cost and carbon results covering production, transport, installation, maintenance and disposal.
None of those complete lifecycle or long-term results has been published for these prototypes. The strongest defensible conclusion is therefore narrow: locally sourced wool showed promising first-season protection beside a synthetic control, and it merits further testing.

The bottom line for “can sheep wool help save glaciers?”
Sheep wool may become a biodegradable alternative for the small areas where glacier covers are already used. Four students’ 2026 field trial at Glacier 3000 found the material broadly comparable to synthetic geotextile during its first summer, but the evidence remains preliminary. Even a durable, low-pollution wool cover would complement—not replace—deep reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions, which remain essential to slow glacier retreat.
