Four Sony Surround Sound Alternatives, From Rear Speakers to Virtual Atmos

If you want an alternative to the Sony HT-S40R, start by checking whether the package includes physical rear speakers. Four non-Sony models have configurations documented by their manufacturers: the LG S65TR, Samsung HW-B67EF/XL, Hisense AX5125H and JBL Bar 500MK2. They are not interchangeable, and the available price figures do not support a current, same-country ranking across budgets.

First decide which Sony system you mean

“Sony surround sound” can describe two different kinds of setup. The Sony HT-S40R is a 5.1 system with rear speakers; Sony’s India specification page says its subwoofer is wired. It is a useful reference if your priority is speakers placed behind you rather than surround effects created from the front.

The Sony HT-S2000 is a different proposition: a 3.1-channel Dolby Atmos bar. Sony describes its Vertical Surround Engine and S-Force PRO Front Surround as technologies that create surround effects. That is not the same package as a conventional 5.1 system with separate rear speakers. Compare what is in the box, not just the channel number or format logos.

Four non-Sony alternatives with documented configurations

These models are candidates to investigate, not a nine-product ranking. The cited specifications are regional manufacturer listings, so check the exact model suffix, box contents and availability where you live.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

LG S65TR: a package with rear speakers

LG India lists the S65TR as a 5.1 soundbar system with a subwoofer and rear speakers, with 600 W and Dolby Digital also listed on its India product page. It is the clearest match among these four if your main requirement is a package that includes separate rear speakers. The listed configuration and power rating are for the India page; confirm that the version sold in your market has the same components.

Samsung HW-B67EF/XL: 5.1 with virtual surround features

Samsung India lists the HW-B67EF/XL as a 5.1 system with Dolby Audio, DTS Virtual:X and 490 W. Its product page also describes Q-Symphony compatibility with specified Samsung TV models. Q-Symphony is a compatibility feature, not evidence that the soundbar package contains separate up-firing speakers. Check the TV requirements and the included speaker components before choosing it for a physical-rear-speaker setup.

Hisense AX5125H: 5.1.2 with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X

Hisense UK lists the AX5125H as a 500 W, 5.1.2 system supporting Dolby Atmos and DTS:X on its UK product page. What Hi-Fi? describes its tested package as including surround speakers. Its review guide reports a tested price of £249 / $350 and says it had observed a UK price as low as £199; those are editorial price observations, not a live quote or a same-market comparison with the other models. Check current local stock, price and exact box contents.

JBL Bar 500MK2: Atmos and virtual surround in a bar-and-sub package

JBL lists the Bar 500MK2 as a 5.1 system with Dolby Atmos, DTS Virtual:X and a wireless 10-inch subwoofer on its product page. The cited specifications establish those features, but do not establish that the package includes discrete rear speakers. Consider it if you are interested in a bar and subwoofer with surround processing; do not assume it is a like-for-like physical-rear-speaker replacement for the HT-S40R.

How to choose without mistaking a feature label for a speaker

  1. Check the included components. Look for rear speakers in the exact product listing or box contents. A “5.1” label alone does not tell you whether they are included.
  2. Match the audio format to your use. Dolby Atmos or DTS:X support is not proof that a system includes rear speakers. Choose based on the formats your TV and sources can pass through, as well as the speaker arrangement you want.
  3. Check connections and TV compatibility. Confirm the ports and connection types supported by both the soundbar and your TV, including whether the connection you plan to use supports the audio formats you want. For Samsung’s Q-Symphony feature, check the specified compatible TV models on the product page.
  4. Plan the physical setup. A separate subwoofer and rear speakers need suitable placement and power arrangements. Sony’s India HT-S40R specifications identify a wired subwoofer; check each alternative’s own regional documentation for its included components and setup needs.
  5. Compare local prices only after confirming the variant. A manufacturer’s regional listing, a reviewer’s historical tested price and a current retailer offer are different kinds of prices. Verify the exact suffix, stock and complete package in your country before deciding which is affordable.

What the available prices do—and do not—show

The figures available here are snapshots from different markets, not a current comparison of all four alternatives. Sony’s US HT-S40R page listed $329.99 and marked the product no longer available; Sony India lists ₹34,990 MRP for the HT-S40R. What Hi-Fi?’s Hisense AX5125H figures are a UK tested price of £249 / $350 and a UK observed low of £199. Those amounts differ by region and price type, so they cannot establish which system is cheapest for you today.

No comparable current price and stock check is established here for the four non-Sony candidates. Treat their feature descriptions as a shortlist for local verification, not as proof that every model is available or affordable in every country.

Bottom line for an HT-S40R alternative

If separate rear speakers are essential, investigate the LG S65TR first among these documented alternatives, then verify the local version’s included components. The Hisense AX5125H is another candidate where Atmos and DTS:X are priorities, but confirm the package and local price. The Samsung HW-B67EF/XL and JBL Bar 500MK2 offer different processing and compatibility features; neither cited specification should be read as confirmation of discrete rear speakers. For a compact front-bar setup instead, the Sony HT-S2000 is a useful reminder that virtual surround and a physical 5.1 speaker package answer different needs.

“Affordable” depends on country, current stock and the exact package. The evidence supports four non-Sony models to check, not nine equally substantiated recommendations or a universal budget ranking.
