Yes, a $200 Android phone can do some things an iPhone cannot do natively. The clearest examples are inserting a microSD card into a compatible phone, viewing two apps at once on supported models, replacing more of the home-screen experience, and—depending on country, device and current policy—installing apps from outside the default store.
Those are capability differences, not guarantees for every inexpensive Android. A particular model may omit a card slot, disable user switching, or restrict app installation. Meanwhile, iPhones can read files from USB drives and SD cards, and recent iOS and Android updates have narrowed older gaps in sharing and migration.

What “$200 Android” actually means
The price is a moving target. Retail discounts, unlocked versus carrier-locked stock, taxes, storage configuration and regional availability can all change the amount you pay. Android Central’s July 6, 2026 budget-phone guide lists the Moto G (2026) among models under $200, with Android 16, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The same guide notes compromises such as a lower-resolution display and a modest chipset. Treat that as a dated buying example, not a permanent price or a promise that every store still has the phone.
The Moto G (2025) is a separate, concrete example of the first feature below: Android Central reports a microSD slot supporting cards up to 1TB. That maximum belongs to that phone’s documented configuration; it is not an Android-wide limit. Before buying, check the exact model number, card type, maximum supported capacity, update policy and whether the listing is unlocked for your carrier.

| Expandable storage | Insert a microSD card; the Moto G (2025) is reported to support up to 1TB | Many models have no slot, and card performance varies |
| Two-app multitasking | Split-screen, pop-up windows or app bubbles on supported phones | Manufacturer software and individual apps can disable the feature |
| System customization | Alternative launchers, different default apps, widgets and more layout control | Menus and available controls differ by Android skin |
| Outside-store installation | Some devices allow APK installation or approved alternative stores | Country, Android version, manufacturer policy and security controls apply |
1. Add storage with a microSD card
A phone with a card slot lets you increase local capacity without replacing the handset. You can keep photos, downloaded video, music, maps and documents on the card while leaving internal storage for the operating system and apps. On the Moto G (2025), Android Central reports support for microSD cards up to 1TB. That is the most concrete capacity figure available here, and it should be read as a model-specific maximum.
How the setup works
- Confirm the exact phone model and its published microSD capacity and speed requirements.
- Power off the phone if the manufacturer instructs you to do so, then open the SIM/memory tray with the supplied tool.
- Place the card in the marked orientation, close the tray and restart the phone.
- When Android offers to format or configure the card, follow the prompt. Formatting erases existing data, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- In Settings, open the storage screen to see available space and choose where the camera or supported apps save new files.
Cards are especially useful for media libraries and backups, but they are not identical to built-in flash storage. A slower or failing card can make photo browsing and app loading sluggish. Some Android versions permit an “adoptable” format that treats a card as internal storage; that encrypts and ties the card to the phone, so it cannot be moved freely between devices. Other phones offer only portable storage. Read the on-screen warning before selecting either mode.
Why this is different from an iPhone
Apple Support documents that an iPhone can access files on external USB drives and SD cards through the Files app or another supported app. You may need a compatible connector or adapter, and some drives require their own power or a powered hub. That is useful external-storage access, but it is not the same as leaving a microSD card inside the phone and having the operating system manage it as removable capacity. Do not claim that an iPhone cannot read an SD card; the distinction is the built-in slot and workflow.

2. Keep two apps visible at once
On supported Android phones, split-screen mode can show two applications simultaneously. Some manufacturers also provide a resizable pop-up or floating window, and app bubbles can keep a conversation or task available above another app. This is practical when you are copying an address into a map, taking notes while reading, checking a recipe while shopping, or moving information between a browser and a message.
Typical split-screen steps
- Open the first app.
- Open the recent-apps view using the navigation button or swipe gesture.
- Tap the app icon at the top of its preview and choose Split screen or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- Select the second app from the recent list or home screen.
- Drag the divider to give one app more space. Exit by dragging the divider to an edge or using the on-screen close control.
The labels and gestures vary among Android versions and manufacturers. A budget phone may support split-screen but still reject a particular app because its developer has not enabled multi-window mode. Video playback, games and camera apps are common examples of software that may refuse to share the screen. Floating windows can consume more memory, so a phone with 4GB of RAM may reload apps more often than a higher-end model.
The iPhone comparison
iPhone does not provide the same native two-app split-screen view found on supported Android phones. Picture-in-picture video and quick app switching are different: they keep one app floating or move you between apps rather than presenting two full phone apps side by side. Apple does offer more multitasking on iPad, so the precise comparison is an iPhone versus an Android phone, not Android versus every Apple device.

3. Change more of the home screen—and sometimes create separate users
Android’s launcher system allows more variation in how the home screen behaves. Depending on the phone, you can install a replacement launcher, change the default home app, resize or remove icons, use different widget arrangements, alter the app drawer and choose alternative defaults for browsers, messaging and other tasks. Android Authority and DigitBin describe this as an ecosystem-level strength rather than a setting guaranteed on every model.
What to check before customizing
- Open Settings and search for Default apps or Home app to see whether the manufacturer permits a replacement launcher.
- Check whether icon packs, grid sizes, gesture navigation and lock-screen controls are exposed on your phone’s Android skin.
- Review launcher permissions and backup options. A third-party launcher can request access to notifications, accessibility features or usage data.
- Test banking, work and accessibility apps after changing the launcher; a few apps behave differently with custom navigation or overlays.
iOS has gained more home-screen controls over time, including changes documented for iOS 26, but Apple still controls the launcher and the overall system layout. The meaningful claim is that compatible Android phones generally expose more replacement and rearrangement choices, not that every Android phone offers unlimited theming.
Separate user profiles are model dependent
Some Android devices include multiple user profiles, allowing another person to have a separate set of apps, files and settings. Look in Settings for System, Users or Multiple users; the path differs, and many inexpensive phones omit the option. A guest profile may be temporary, while a full secondary user keeps its own data. Do not confuse this with a managed work profile, which an employer or school can impose through device-management software.

An iPhone is designed around one primary user account per device. Family Sharing separates services and purchases, but it does not create independent phone environments with separate app data. If you need a genuinely shared handset, verify that the specific Android model supports user switching before purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. Install apps outside the default store—only where the rules allow it
Android’s package system can, on some devices, install an application package obtained outside the default store. The usual control is an Install unknown apps permission granted to a particular source app, such as a browser or file manager. After installing, you can revoke that permission. Some manufacturers, carriers, enterprise policies or regional builds disable the process or add warnings.
A safer way to evaluate an outside-store install
- Identify the publisher and obtain the package from a source you can verify, rather than a reposting site.
- Check the requested permissions, signing information and whether the developer provides a way to receive security updates.
- Enable installation permission only for the source app that needs it.
- Install, scan and test the app, then return to Settings and switch the permission off.
- Keep Play Protect or the phone maker’s malware protections enabled unless you understand the specific consequence of changing them.
Installing an APK can expose you to counterfeit apps, spyware, fraudulent updates and software that no longer receives patches. It can also break banking or streaming services that require an approved distribution channel. A phone administrator can block the setting entirely.

Why the iPhone side requires a narrow claim
Apple’s alternative app-marketplace rules are not global. Android Authority and DigitBin describe alternative iPhone marketplaces as an EU-specific option under Apple’s current framework, while installation outside that region remains more restricted. Country, operating-system version, Apple account region, device policy and regulatory changes all matter. Because those rules are evolving, the defensible comparison is limited: a compatible Android phone may offer a more direct route to an independently supplied package, whereas an iPhone’s alternatives are constrained by Apple’s regional policies. Check Apple’s current documentation and local law before relying on this feature.
Do not use outdated differences as evidence
Cross-platform sharing has changed. In a May 12, 2026 Android announcement, Google said Quick Share can generate a QR code for sharing with iOS devices. The announcement also describes a revised iPhone-to-Android transfer process that can move passwords, photos, messages, apps, contacts, home-screen layout and eSIM on supported launch devices. Rollout and device eligibility still need to be checked, but blanket statements that Android and iPhone cannot share files or that switching requires rebuilding everything manually are no longer reliable.
Likewise, an iPhone’s ability to read USB and SD storage means “Android has expandable storage and iPhone has none” is too broad. The useful distinction is a built-in, always-available card slot versus an attached drive and adapter. And desktop-style modes associated with flagship Android hardware should not be counted as a $200-phone feature unless the exact budget model documents support.
How to compare real phones before buying
Use the exact model, not the operating system label, as your unit of comparison. A short checklist prevents the four capabilities from turning into assumptions:
- Out-the-door price: Include tax, shipping, activation requirements and whether the advertised price depends on a carrier promotion.
- Storage design: Confirm internal capacity, microSD slot, maximum card size and whether apps can use the card.
- Multitasking: Search the manufacturer’s manual for split-screen, pop-up view and supported-app restrictions.
- Customization: Verify launcher replacement, default-app controls, widgets and user-profile support in the phone’s software version.
- App sources: Check the rules in your country and whether the manufacturer or carrier disables outside-store installation.
- Long-term support: Compare promised Android-version and security-update periods, not just the launch specification.
- Compromises: Budget models can trade display resolution, camera quality, processor speed, storage speed or update duration for a lower price.
The result is a more honest answer than a platform-wide slogan. A well-chosen $200 Android can provide built-in expandable storage, genuine two-app multitasking and a more changeable user environment, with conditional freedom to install software from other sources. An iPhone remains capable of external storage access and increasingly convenient cross-platform transfer, so the deciding factor is the specific phone, region and software version you will actually use.
