Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with Isaac Asimov’s original trilogy: Foundation, Foundation and Empire, then Second Foundation. It is the shortest useful reading path after Apple TV+’s adaptation, and you do not need to read the prequels first.

- Foundation and Empire
- Second Foundation
This order follows the trilogy’s publication and reading sequence. A 2025 adaptation guide identifies these as the three most important books for viewers who want to focus on the show and its source material. Read the guide.

How the books relate to Apple TV+
Apple describes the series as based on Asimov’s novels. That does not mean each season retells one book in order: the 2025 guide says the show draws on the first three novels in different ways. Read the books as their own story rather than expecting a one-book-per-season match. Apple’s series page.

What to read after the trilogy
For more about Hari Seldon and the Empire
Read Prelude to Foundation and then Forward the Foundation. These prequels add background, but they are optional before the original trilogy; starting with them means encountering material written later rather than following the trilogy’s original reading experience. See the 2025 reading guide.
To continue the Foundation story
After Second Foundation, continue with Foundation’s Edge and then Foundation and Earth. The 2025 guide reported that the series then drew little from these sequels, a description tied to the show’s coverage at that time rather than a guarantee about later episodes. See the guide’s sequel notes.

For optional Robot and Empire context
The wider connected reading named by the guide includes the Robot novels The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, The Robots of Dawn, and Robots and Empire, as well as the Empire novels The Stars, Like Dust, The Currents of Space, and Pebble in the Sky. These expand the setting but are not prerequisites for the Foundation trilogy. See the connected-reading titles.

For a first read, use the trilogy order above rather than trying to arrange every connected book by its story timeline. Asimov’s books were not written in chronological order, and the additional books are best treated as optional paths rather than a single required sequence. The Asimov FAQ search result notes the difference, but a detailed author-endorsed chronological sequence is not established here. See the Asimov FAQ.
