Windows Report described the change on October 14, 2026; Google’s complete reward table still needs to be checked before those figures are treated as final program terms.
What the reported Chrome bounty change covers
The increase is aimed at vulnerabilities whose practical impact can be demonstrated, not at every crash or coding defect. The most valuable reports show that content delivered through a web page can influence a security-sensitive Chrome process and produce a controlled memory write. Whether a report qualifies depends on the bug class, demonstrated impact, exploitability, the affected process and whether the result is a single vulnerability or part of a multi-stage chain.

| Reported scenario | Amount | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying memory-corruption vulnerability | $2,000 base reward | Reported by Windows Report as a fourfold increase; the complete official tier table was not included in the report. |
| Controlled write demonstrated from web content | Up to $20,000 | The demonstration must affect a Chrome browser, network or GPU process; the figure is a reported maximum, not an automatic payment. |
| CVE-2026-85046 V8 type-confusion report | $1,000 | A separate bounty credited to researcher Salvatore Gulizia; it should not be read as the cause of the reward increase or as a universal Chrome rate. |
A report that merely identifies suspicious code, causes a denial of service or duplicates an existing submission may not meet the conditions for the higher amounts. Researchers should preserve a reliable reproduction, explain the security boundary crossed and document every step needed to reproduce the impact.
Why Google is expanding rewards now
The change comes during an unusually large Chrome security-fix cycle. SecurityWeek reported that Chrome 149 and 150 together fixed 1,072 security defects, more than the total fixed across the previous 23 milestones combined. The next release added 370 more fixes, taking the reported 2026 total above 1,800 at that point. Those counts measure fixes released, not necessarily new vulnerabilities found by external researchers, so they should not be interpreted as a direct measure of Chrome’s real-world exploit rate.

Google has also described a Gemini-based agent harness for searching Chrome’s source code. The system combines a knowledge base of earlier CVEs with Chrome’s Git history, reads developer guidance in SECURITY.md through a critic agent and can run vulnerability-finding models repeatedly. Google says analysis occurs on locked-down machines with no general internet access.
What the AI system does
- Searches source code for patterns associated with past vulnerabilities.
- Uses historical CVEs and code changes to provide context for candidate findings.
- Applies a critic stage that checks findings against project security guidance.
- Helps validate candidates, triage reports and generate possible patches.
An automated finding is not automatically a zero-day. A candidate still needs confirmation, a working security explanation, an appropriate severity assessment and a patch that can be shipped safely.

The clearest example: CVE-2026-3545
SecurityWeek identified CVE-2026-3545 as a CVSS 9.8 sandbox escape patched in Chrome 145 in early May 2026. The reported root problem was insufficient data validation in Navigation. A specially crafted HTML page could exploit the flaw, and a compromised renderer could then trick the browser into reading local files.
Google said the defect had remained in Chrome for 13 years before the AI-assisted discovery. Its age illustrates why historical code analysis matters: a vulnerability can survive many release cycles without being noticed, even when the affected feature is heavily used.

A separate actively exploited browser flaw
The Hacker News archive separately reported CVE-2026-85046, a V8 type-confusion vulnerability fixed in Chrome 152.0.7977.82. The report described arbitrary code execution inside Chrome’s sandbox from a crafted HTML page and credited Salvatore Gulizia with a $1,000 bounty.
This incident demonstrates the kind of browser bug security researchers monitor, but there is no evidence that it triggered the reward increase. It also shows why a bounty amount alone cannot describe risk: active exploitation, sandbox impact and the attack path matter as much as the payment.

Google’s plan to shorten the patch gap
Google says it is piloting twice-weekly security releases alongside a two-week major-release schedule. The company’s longer-term plans include dynamic patching that can apply some updates without a conventional restart, background restarts with seamless session restoration and migration of vulnerable components toward memory-safe languages such as Rust.

The objective is not simply to discover more bugs. Google’s stated concern is the time between finding a vulnerability, producing a fix, distributing it and getting users protected. As the company puts it, “Every bug found and fixed is one less foothold for an attacker,” but a patch only helps once it has shipped and been applied.

How to check whether your Chrome installation is patched
- Desktop: Open Chrome’s three-dot menu, choose Help, then About Google Chrome.
- Allow the page to check for an update. If one is downloaded, select Relaunch to complete installation.
- Record the version shown after restarting, especially when a security advisory names a minimum fixed version.
- Android or iPhone: Check Chrome’s listing in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and install any available update.
- If the browser is managed by an employer or school, follow the administrator’s update policy; a delayed rollout can be intentional, but it leaves the device on the older security state until deployment finishes.
Keep automatic updates enabled where possible. A current browser reduces exposure to vulnerabilities delivered through ordinary web content, but it cannot undo compromise that occurred before the update.
Does a bigger bounty mean Chrome is less secure?
Not by itself. A higher reward can encourage more independent testing and give researchers a reason to spend time proving difficult, high-impact bugs. The unusually high 2026 fix volume may reflect stronger automated discovery, more external reporting, or both. It does not establish that Chrome is becoming either safer or less safe without evidence about exploitation, exposure and how quickly users receive patches.
The practical test is the complete response chain: credible reports, accurate triage, a usable fix, rapid release and installation on real devices. Google’s reward change addresses the first step; the proposed release and patching changes target the steps that follow.
