Forza Horizon 6 is already available on Xbox Series X|S and PC, while the PS5 versions are scheduled for January 26, 2027. PS5 Premium Edition early access starts January 21. The PS5 release will support cross-platform play and cross-save with Xbox and Steam, so choosing PS5 does not isolate you from the existing Xbox community.
The evidence does not establish a performance winner. Playground Games has confirmed a 4K 30fps Quality mode and a 60fps Performance mode on the base PS5, while the Xbox product page advertises 4K Ultra HD and 60fps support for Series X|S. Those are separate platform descriptions, not a matched test, so there is no reliable basis for saying PS5, Series X or Series S has better image quality or frame-rate stability.

The practical choice is therefore less about a proven graphics advantage and more about timing, your existing console, subscriptions, preferred storefront and whether you want a disc. This guide separates confirmed capabilities from questions that still need measured testing or a final PS5 store listing.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release dates
Xbox Series X|S and PC received Forza Horizon 6 on May 19, 2026. Premium Edition owners received early access on May 15. The specific PS5 schedule announced by Playground Games is later: Standard and Deluxe editions launch January 26, 2027, and Premium Edition early access begins January 21, 2027.

The current PS5 timing comes from the October 8, 2026 Forza PS5 announcement. Earlier launch material used broader “later in 2026” wording, which has been superseded by the January 2027 date.
That difference matters if you want to play at launch with friends, follow seasonal community activity from its beginning or avoid buying a second version simply to start earlier. Xbox and PC players have already had access for months by the time the PS5 Standard and Deluxe editions arrive. Premium early access narrows the gap by five days on PS5, but it does not change the fact that Xbox launched first.
Performance: what is actually confirmed
Both platforms are advertised as supporting high-resolution and high-frame-rate play, but the available information does not provide a side-by-side benchmark. Do not treat marketing descriptions as measurements of average frame rate, frame pacing, resolution scaling or loading time.

What Quality and Performance modes mean for a player
Quality mode prioritizes the visual presentation and is identified by Playground Games as 4K at 30fps for the base-PS5 trailer capture. Performance mode targets 60fps. A higher frame rate generally makes steering, camera movement and fast driving feel more responsive, while a 30fps quality presentation can prioritize visual detail. The announcement does not specify every setting that changes between modes, so features such as reflections, shadows, foliage density and resolution should not be inferred.
“4K” also should not be read as a promise that every frame is rendered at a fixed native 3840-by-2160 resolution. The published wording does not explain dynamic resolution, reconstruction, output resolution or the exact television settings used for either console. Likewise, “60fps support” does not provide a minimum frame rate or frame-time graph. Those details require testing the same routes, weather conditions and races on each machine.
Is PS5 better than Xbox Series X?
There is no defensible winner from the published information. PS5 has two explicitly named modes, and Xbox has a broad 4K Ultra HD/60fps capability claim. Neither source supplies the controlled, platform-matched measurements needed to rank the consoles. If performance is your deciding factor, wait for testing that reports the same scenes, display settings, resolution behavior and frame-time data on base PS5, Series X and Series S.

Series S is included in Microsoft’s general 4K Ultra HD and 60fps support statement, but the product page does not provide a separate Series S mode table. Do not assume that Series S uses the same internal resolution, visual settings or performance headroom as Series X. A fair comparison needs separate measurements for both Xbox consoles rather than treating “Series X|S” as one identical configuration.

Cross-play between PS5, Xbox and Steam
Yes. The PS5 announcement confirms cross-platform play with Xbox and Steam. A PS5 player can therefore play with friends using the Xbox versions or the Steam version, subject to the game’s online-service requirements and any account or privacy settings that apply at launch.
Cross-platform user-generated content is also part of the confirmed feature set. The publisher specifically names EventLab races, Prefabs, Garages, Estates, Liveries and Tuning Setups as content shared across platforms. That establishes a common community pool; it does not promise that every individual item, playlist or future feature will behave identically in every version.
Cross-play removes the need to buy the same console as your friends. A group can include PS5, Xbox and Steam players, but each person still needs access to the game on their own platform and must meet the applicable online-service conditions. The announcement confirms compatibility between the named versions; it does not describe every privacy, party-chat or account-linking step.
Cross-save, progress and purchase entitlements
Cross-save is confirmed between PS5, Xbox and Steam. Progress can therefore follow the supported account across those platforms, which is useful if you begin on Xbox or PC and later move to PS5.
Before switching, use the same supported account that carries your progress and verify the account-linking prompts in the game. Cross-save means saved progression is shared; it does not promise that local settings, console captures or every offline file will be copied. The official announcement does not publish a technical list of which individual save elements transfer.
Cross-save is not the same as cross-buy. The official announcements reviewed do not say that buying the game on an Xbox or PlayStation storefront grants a free copy on the other console, nor do they confirm that paid expansions, Car Pass content or other add-ons transfer between storefronts. Treat the game license and downloadable-content license as separate questions and check the store terms for your region before buying twice or assuming an add-on will appear on another platform.
Shared game features and setting
The platform descriptions present the same core Forza Horizon 6 experience. Playground Games sets the game in Japan, with Tokyo, Japanese car culture, Aftermarket Cars and Touge Battles among the highlighted material. The campaign starts with the player as a tourist working toward the Horizon Festival, progressing through Horizon Qualifiers and Wristbands.

The Xbox product information advertises more than 550 real-world cars. That is the publisher’s product-page figure, not an independently audited count or a PS5-specific catalog total. The feature description also identifies multiplayer CoLab as an upgraded EventLab toolset.

These elements are game features, not documented Xbox-only advantages. The sources do not state that Japan, the campaign progression, the car roster, Touge Battles, Aftermarket Cars or CoLab are absent or reduced on PS5.

Where each platform fits
Choose PS5 if you already play there
- You want the game on your existing console and do not want to change hardware.
- Your friends are on Xbox or Steam; cross-play is confirmed, so their platform does not prevent multiplayer.
- You value the option of a 60fps Performance mode or a 4K 30fps Quality mode, with the understanding that detailed comparative testing is not yet available.
- You prefer a physical copy: the publisher says a PS5 disc edition will be sold through supporting retailers.
- You are willing to wait until January 2027, or until January 21 for Premium early access, rather than starting on Xbox in May 2026.
Choose Xbox Series X|S if you want the earliest console access
- Xbox launched in May 2026, months before the PS5 editions.
- You want access through the Xbox ecosystem, including the Xbox console and Windows PC options described by Microsoft.
- You use Game Pass and the game is included day one with Game Pass Ultimate; PC access is available through PC Game Pass, subject to current membership terms and local availability.
- You want Xbox Play Anywhere support between the listed Xbox and Windows versions.
- You already own Xbox accessories, a compatible display setup or an established Xbox account and would rather keep purchases together.
Choose based on your friends, not assumed performance parity
Because cross-play and cross-save span PS5, Xbox and Steam, the usual multiplayer-platform divide is smaller than it was for earlier entries. The practical differences are release timing, your existing hardware and subscriptions, preferred storefront, and whether you want a disc. Published information does not justify choosing one console on the assumption that it has a faster or more stable version.
Game Pass, PC and cloud availability
Microsoft’s launch information lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud and Steam as supported destinations. It also describes Forza Horizon 6 as a day-one Game Pass Ultimate title, with Xbox Series X|S consoles covered by Game Pass Ultimate and PC access available through PC Game Pass.
Xbox Play Anywhere is relevant for people who alternate between console and Windows PC: the launch material identifies Forza Horizon 6 as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. That benefit belongs to the Xbox and Windows ecosystem. It does not mean that an Xbox purchase creates a PS5 license, and it does not alter the separate PlayStation storefront rules.
Game Pass catalogs, prices, membership rules and regional availability can change. Check the current listing for your country before subscribing or assuming that a particular edition, expansion or early-access entitlement is included. A subscription listing is access to the game under the service terms; it does not establish ownership of a PlayStation copy or transfer of paid add-ons between stores.
PS5 disc edition and digital buying questions
Playground Games says the PS5 version will be available on disc at supporting retailers. That confirms the format, not inventory at a particular shop or region. The Standard and Deluxe release date remains January 26, 2027, with Premium early access from January 21.
A disc can be useful if you prefer to resell or lend games, but the announcement does not state pricing, regional stock, install requirements or whether every edition will receive a disc release. Confirm those details with the retailer and the final PlayStation listing when ordering.

The Xbox product page lists its own edition contents. Deluxe includes the base game, Car Pass and Welcome Pack. Premium includes two Premium Expansions, the Italian Passion Car Pack, Time Attack Car Pack, Car Pass, VIP Membership and Welcome Pack. Those are Xbox listing details; do not assume that the PS5 packages contain identical items until the PlayStation store or the PS5 announcement specifies them.

Edition details can change as the PS5 launch approaches. Use the current PS5 store listing for the final package rather than inferring it from Xbox’s page. If you own an Xbox edition already, compare the listed contents line by line before purchasing a PS5 edition; shared progress does not by itself identify which paid items you own on the new storefront.
What remains unknown before the PS5 launch
The official material leaves several useful comparison questions unanswered:
- There is no side-by-side resolution table for base PS5, Series X and Series S.
- No independent frame-rate, frame-pacing or loading-time measurements are provided.
- The sources do not specify whether Series X and Series S use different graphics settings.
- Cross-save is confirmed, but cross-buy and paid-DLC transfer are not.
- The PS5 announcement confirms a disc format, but not stock at a particular retailer or in every region.
- The PS5 announcement does not list a complete edition-by-edition contents table matching Xbox’s Deluxe and Premium descriptions.
These are evidence limits, not evidence that one version is inferior. A later technical analysis could change the performance conclusion if it measures identical scenes and settings. Until then, claims about sharper image quality, steadier 60fps or faster loading are speculation.

- Check your friends’ platforms. They can play together across PS5, Xbox and Steam because cross-play is confirmed.
- Check when you want to start. Xbox access began May 19, 2026; PS5 Standard and Deluxe access begins January 26, 2027, or January 21 with Premium early access.
- Check subscription value. Xbox and PC Game Pass availability is documented, but membership terms vary by region and date.
- Choose disc or digital. A PS5 disc edition is planned; the Xbox and PS5 storefronts remain separate purchases unless the platform holders explicitly say otherwise.
- Do not buy on performance assumptions. Confirmed mode descriptions are not a comparative benchmark.
- Verify edition contents at checkout. Xbox’s Deluxe and Premium packages are documented, while PS5 package parity and add-on transfer are not yet established.
- Use the supported account for cross-save. Confirm the account you intend to use before creating progress on a second platform.
Bottom line: which version should you get?
Get the Xbox Series X|S version if you want to play immediately, use Game Pass, or already own your games in the Xbox ecosystem. Get the PS5 version if that is your preferred console, you want its planned disc release, or you are comfortable waiting until January 2027. Multiplayer and progression should not force the choice: cross-play, cross-save and a shared pool of named community content connect PS5 with Xbox and Steam.
Do not describe either console as the technical winner yet. PS5 has an announced 4K 30fps Quality mode and 60fps Performance mode, while Xbox advertises 4K Ultra HD and 60fps support; neither set of information is a controlled comparison.

Does Forza Horizon 6 run at 60fps on PS5?

Xbox is the choice for earliest access and Game Pass; PS5 is the choice for existing PlayStation owners and its planned disc edition. Cross-play and cross-save connect the communities, but no reliable test currently proves one console performs better.
