Buy Gran Turismo 7 if you want a PS5 racing game you can play now, track-focused competition, Sport Mode, Gran Turismo Sophy or confirmed PS VR2 support. Wait for Forza Horizon 6 if your priority is an open-world driving adventure set in Japan, festival progression, exploration and announced cross-play/cross-save. Forza Horizon 6 Standard and Deluxe Editions are scheduled for January 26, 2027, with Premium Edition early access from January 21, 2027; it is not a playable PS5 alternative today.
The short answer
These are not interchangeable versions of the same racing formula. Gran Turismo 7 is the immediate PS5 choice for structured circuit and track-route racing, collecting and tuning cars, organized online competition, AI races and virtual-reality driving. Forza Horizon 6 is the future choice for a broad, open-world driving adventure in Japan, where festival activities, discovery and social events matter as much as racing from one corner to the next.

Availability decides the first branch of the decision. Gran Turismo 7 already has a PS5 edition. Playground Games announced on October 8, 2026 that Forza Horizon 6 Standard and Deluxe Editions will launch on PS5 on January 26, 2027, with Premium Edition owners receiving early access on January 21. A PS5 disc is planned through supporting retailers. Until that release, any judgment about the PS5 version’s frame rate, resolution, wheel behavior, controls or hands-on feel would be speculation.
At-a-glance comparison
| Question | Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 | Forza Horizon 6 on PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Can you play it now? | Yes; the PS5 edition is available. | No; Standard and Deluxe are scheduled for January 26, 2027. Premium early access starts January 21, 2027. |
| World structure | Circuits and track routes, with races and events built around them. | Open-world Japan with driving, exploration, festival events, car meets and creative activities. |
| Progression emphasis | Structured racing and car-collection progression, plus Sport Mode competition. | Festival progression and activities spread across an explorable world. |
| Cars and routes cited by official pages | Over 400 cars and over 90 track routes with dynamic weather. | More than 550 real-world cars; the PS5 listing also highlights custom event creation. |
| Online requirement on PS5 | PlayStation Plus is required for Sport Mode and Lobby, according to the online manual. | PlayStation Plus is required for console online multiplayer, according to the PlayStation Store listing. |
| Cross-platform play and progression | Not established by the cited product information. | Publisher-announced cross-play and cross-save across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PS5 and Steam. |
| PS VR2 | Supported on PS5. | The cited official PS5 announcements do not announce VR support. |
| AI feature highlighted by the publisher | Gran Turismo Sophy, described as a next-generation racing AI agent on PS5. | No equivalent PS5 AI feature is established in the cited announcements. |
The car totals are not a quality score. One listing counts a large collection in an open-world game; the other pairs its car count with a stated number of track routes. The figures also come from separate product pages and both use “over” or “more than,” rather than a fixed final total.

Availability, editions and what “buy now” means
Gran Turismo 7 is the current PS5 purchase
Gran Turismo 7 can be purchased and played on PS5 now. Its official product information identifies the current product iteration as SPEC III, which began with an update on December 4, 2025. Live-service game details can change, so check the current in-game version and store description at the time you buy rather than treating an old feature list as permanent.
Forza Horizon 6 is a future PS5 release
Playground Games’ October 8, 2026 announcement gives the following schedule:
- January 21, 2027: Premium Edition early access begins, five days before the standard launch.
- January 26, 2027: Standard and Deluxe Editions release on PS5.
- Physical option: A PS5 disc is planned at supporting retailers.
The PlayStation Store also lists January 26, 2027 as the PS5 release date. A preorder is a commitment to a future product, not access to a currently playable PS5 build. If you need a game for this weekend, choose GT7; if you are happy to wait for the Japan setting and open world, FH6 is the relevant future purchase.

Gran Turismo 7: races organized around tracks
GT7 presents driving through circuits and defined track routes. That structure suits players who want to learn braking points, repeat a layout to improve a time, compare a car’s behavior on the same course and enter organized races. Its official page lists over 90 track routes and dynamic weather, so a route is not necessarily a single unchanging test. The game also builds its identity around a large car collection, with over 400 cars cited on the product page.
This does not mean every session is a formal championship. You can collect cars, run events and take part in online formats, but the central mental model is “choose a car and master a route,” rather than “drive anywhere and discover the next activity.”

Forza Horizon 6: an open-world festival in Japan
FH6 is designed as an open-world driving adventure set in Japan. Playground Games describes festival events, exploration, car meets, multiplayer activities and creative tools, including custom event creation. Driving between activities is part of the experience rather than merely a menu transition, so the appeal extends to sightseeing, finding new roads and joining social events.
The open-world format changes what “progress” feels like. You are not limited to a sequence of track sessions; the festival provides a framework for activities distributed across the map. That makes FH6 the better fit if the pleasure is wandering, discovering a route and then turning that discovery into an event. It is not evidence that its circuit racing is better or worse than GT7’s; the games are prioritizing different kinds of driving.
Campaign and progression: choose the loop you will repeat
GT7’s structured improvement loop
GT7 is suited to a player who enjoys a deliberate cycle: select an event, prepare a car, race on a known route, improve the result and add another vehicle to the collection. Track layouts and weather conditions give you concrete variables to study. Sport Mode adds a competitive layer for players who want scheduled online races rather than only solo events.
Gran Turismo Sophy is another reason to choose this loop. The official product page describes it as a next-generation racing AI agent developed through a collaboration between Polyphony Digital, Sony AI and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The cited information confirms the feature on PS5; it does not promise that Sophy replaces every opponent or appears in every event, so treat it as an AI option within GT7 rather than the entire campaign design.
FH6’s festival and exploration loop
FH6’s announced progression is built around a festival in Japan. You can move through festival events, explore the open world, attend car meets, join multiplayer activities and use creative tools to make custom events. This loop is a natural match for players who dislike repeating one circuit until every tenth of a second is optimized and instead want variety in scenery, activities and destinations.
Because the PS5 version has not launched, the final balance of activities, unlock requirements and campaign pacing is not yet verified. The publisher’s feature descriptions establish the intended structure, not a hands-on assessment of how quickly content unlocks or how demanding the progression becomes.
Cars, routes and content scale
| Published figure | Game and source context | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| More than 550 real-world cars | Forza Horizon 6 PS5 PlayStation Store listing (2026) | A large announced car roster in an open-world setting. |
| Over 400 cars | Official Gran Turismo 7 product page | A substantial collection tied to GT7’s track-racing ecosystem. |
| Over 90 track routes | Official Gran Turismo 7 product page | A stated set of routes with dynamic-weather racing. |
Do not subtract 400 from 550 and call the result a winner. The FH6 figure counts real-world cars but does not state a route total in the cited listing. GT7 reports both cars and routes, which gives more information about its track-focused content. Neither page establishes how many of the cars overlap, how often each vehicle appears in events, or how much post-launch content will be added.
If your buying question is “Which game has more cars?”, FH6 has the larger announced number. If your question is “Which game gives me a large collection and many explicitly listed circuits?”, GT7 supplies the clearer track context. If your question is “Which game lets me drive those cars through a broad world?”, the announced FH6 structure is the relevant distinction.
Online multiplayer, subscriptions and cross-platform play
PlayStation Plus requirements
Both games require a separately purchased PlayStation Plus membership for the cited online functions on PS5, but the wording differs. GT7’s online manual says PS Plus is required for Sport Mode and Lobby. The FH6 PlayStation Store listing says console online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. Plan for the subscription if online competition or multiplayer is a deciding factor; owning the game alone does not cover that requirement.
Cross-play and cross-save in FH6
Playground Games advertises cross-play and cross-save for FH6 across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5 and Steam. That is useful if your household or regular group uses different platforms, or if you switch between a console and PC. The announcement establishes the feature across those platforms, but does not provide the detailed account-linking steps or explain every mode’s platform rules. Check the final support documentation near launch before moving an existing save.

- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
GT7’s organized competition
GT7’s product page highlights Sport Mode Daily Races and an annual Online Championship. This is a more specific competitive promise than a general “multiplayer available” label: the game has named race formats for players who want recurring online competition. The online manual’s PS Plus requirement applies to Sport Mode and Lobby.
PS VR2 and other hardware considerations
GT7 has confirmed PS VR2 support
GT7 supports PlayStation VR2 on PS5. For a PS VR2 owner, this is a confirmed feature that can settle the purchase without comparing smaller differences. The official product information also references a Logitech G923 racing wheel and pedals as an example accessory on the purchase page, but the cited material does not verify that a particular wheel model works with both games on PS5.
FH6 VR status is unconfirmed, not a permanent “no”
The official FH6 PS5 sources cited for this comparison do not announce PS VR2 support. That means you should not buy FH6 expecting VR based on the available announcement, but it would be too strong to turn the omission into a permanent statement that VR will never be supported. Recheck the final PS5 feature list after launch if VR is important to you.
Wheels and controls
A racing wheel and pedals can be a sensible category of accessory for either kind of game, but compatibility is model- and platform-specific. The available information does not verify a particular wheel with both GT7 and FH6 on PS5. Confirm the exact model’s PS5 support and the game’s compatibility list before spending money. Do not infer frame rate, resolution, force-feedback quality or controller behavior for FH6 from the Xbox or PC versions.
What is still unknown about FH6 on PS5
The PS5 edition is being developed by Panic Button in collaboration with Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios. That establishes who is working on the port, not how it will perform in a living room. No independent benchmark or hands-on PS5 comparison is established here.
Best Value
- Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
- Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
- Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
- Final frame-rate targets and resolution modes are not confirmed in the cited material.
- Controller response, loading behavior and wheel support on PS5 have not been hands-on verified.
- The final launch balance of open-world activities, event creation and progression remains to be experienced.
- Comparative driving feel against GT7 cannot responsibly be declared before the PS5 release.
These are normal pre-release limits, not evidence that FH6 will perform poorly. They simply mean a decision made before January 26, 2027 should be based on structure, timing and announced features rather than invented performance claims.
Which game fits your priorities?
Choose Gran Turismo 7 now when…
- You need a PS5 racing game immediately.
- You prefer circuit and track-route racing to free-roaming exploration.
- You want a large collection paired with over 90 officially listed track routes and dynamic weather.
- Sport Mode Daily Races, Lobby access or the annual Online Championship are central to your plans.
- You own PS VR2 and want a confirmed racing title for it.
- Gran Turismo Sophy is appealing as an advanced AI racing option on PS5.
Wait for Forza Horizon 6 when…
- Your ideal session starts with exploring a Japan-set open world rather than selecting a circuit from a menu.
- Festival progression, car meets, multiplayer activities and custom event creation sound more attractive than a track-first campaign.
- You want the announced cross-play and cross-save ecosystem spanning Xbox, PC, PS5 and Steam.
- You are comfortable waiting until January 26, 2027, or buying Premium for January 21 early access.
- The announced total of more than 550 real-world cars matters more to you than GT7’s explicitly listed track routes.
When both could make sense
Some players will reasonably own both, but for different moods. GT7 covers focused practice, organized competition and PS VR2 sessions. FH6 covers open-world discovery, festival activities and cross-platform social play once its PS5 version arrives. Buying both is only rational if you value those distinct loops; the car counts alone do not justify treating them as duplicate purchases.
Buying and waiting checklist
- Decide whether you need to play now. If yes, GT7 is the available PS5 option. If no, continue to the preference questions.
- Choose your world structure. Pick GT7 for track routes and structured races; wait for FH6 for Japan, exploration and festival activities.
- Check online needs. Budget for PlayStation Plus for GT7 Sport Mode/Lobby or FH6 console multiplayer.
- Check your hardware. PS VR2 support is confirmed for GT7; FH6 PS5 VR support is not announced in the cited sources. Treat wheel compatibility as model-specific.
- Choose the FH6 edition only if the timing works. Premium early access starts January 21, 2027; Standard and Deluxe launch January 26, 2027. A preorder does not provide access before the applicable date.
- Recheck final FH6 details near launch. Confirm the store listing, edition contents, PS5 performance modes, accessories and any VR announcement before release-day purchase.
Verdict
For a PS5 racing game you can buy and play today, Gran Turismo 7 is the practical recommendation. Its track-based identity, over 400 cars, over 90 track routes with dynamic weather, Sport Mode, Sophy AI and confirmed PS VR2 support give it a clear purpose.

Choose it because you want that structure and can wait—not because its pre-release numbers prove it will handle or perform better than GT7 on PS5.
