First identify whether you own the Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox app, Xbox console, or cloud edition and note exactly where startup stops. Then verify the published PC requirements, install all pending updates, restart, and follow the repair path for your platform. The steps below separate those paths so you do not apply a Steam fix to an Xbox app installation or mistake a storage shortfall for a graphics problem.
Identify the edition and the exact launch symptom
Forza Horizon 5 was developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios. The Steam edition released on November 8, 2021, but the Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox app, Xbox console, and cloud versions do not expose the same repair controls or depend on the same local files.

- Steam: The game is installed and launched through Steam. Steam account ownership, Steam services, overlays, and the local installation manifest can all affect startup.
- Microsoft Store/Xbox app on Windows: The Store account, Xbox account, Gaming Services, Xbox Identity components, Windows updates, and app package permissions are part of the launch chain.
- Xbox console: Console storage, installed updates, account status, and a damaged local installation are the main local variables; Windows repair menus do not apply.
- Cloud play: There may be no local game installation to validate. Network quality, service availability, account entitlements, and the cloud session itself matter more than PC files.
Record the symptom before changing anything. “No window appears,” an immediate close after the splash screen, a permanent “Launching” state, a black screen, an error code, and a sign-in loop point to different branches. Note whether the problem began after an update, a driver change, a Windows update, or moving the game to another drive.
Check the published PC baseline before deeper repairs
Steam’s current listing gives the following baseline for the PC edition. These figures are requirements for running the game, not a promise that every computer meeting them will launch successfully.

Check free space on the drive that contains the game, not merely the system drive. If it has less than 110 GB available, free space or a larger drive is a necessary conditional remedy; it is not a universal fix for computers that already meet the requirement. A 1 TB gaming SSD is a reasonable capacity anchor for a library that includes FH5, but replacing storage will not correct an account, service, driver, or corrupted-file problem by itself.
On Windows, press Win, type winver, and confirm the build. In Settings > System > About, check installed RAM and system type. Use Settings > System > Storage to inspect available space. Confirm that your graphics hardware supports DirectX 12 and that its driver is not several releases behind.
Apply the safe, cross-platform checks first
- Install the game update. In Steam, open Library, right-click Forza Horizon 5, choose Properties > Updates, and allow pending downloads. In the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, open the library or downloads area and update FH5.
- Update Windows. Go to Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart even if Windows does not insist on an immediate reboot.
- Update the graphics driver. Use the support channel for your Nvidia, AMD, or Intel GPU, install a driver that supports DirectX 12, and reboot. If the failure began immediately after a driver update, note that timing for later support rather than repeatedly installing unrelated drivers.
- Update the launcher and dependencies. Update Steam, the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, and Xbox Identity components where applicable. A partially updated service can prevent the game from reaching its first window.
- Restart, then test once. Close the launcher, reboot Windows or the console, sign in again, and launch FH5 without changing several other settings at the same time. A controlled retest makes the result useful for the next branch.
Temporarily remove nonessential variables during this test: overlays, recording widgets, hardware-monitoring overlays, and unusual launch options. Re-enable them individually after a successful launch so you can identify a conflict instead of leaving the system in an unnecessarily altered state.

Steam: repair the launcher, account and installation
Confirm Steam ownership and session state
Open Steam, verify that you are signed in to the account that owns FH5, and check that the game is not hidden behind a family-sharing or offline-state restriction. Sign out and back in if the library shows the title but the launch button does nothing. Restart Steam completely rather than merely closing its window; use Steam > Exit, wait for the process to close, and reopen it.
Validate the installed files
- Open Steam > Library.
- Right-click Forza Horizon 5 and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and test FH5 once the download or replacement process completes.
File verification repairs files that differ from Steam’s current manifest. It does not repair Windows, your GPU driver, an Xbox account token, or a failed third-party overlay, so a clean verification result does not rule out those causes.
Test for overlay and launch-option conflicts
Disable the Steam Overlay for FH5 temporarily in the game’s Properties window. Also pause other overlays and capture tools for one test run. Remove custom launch options, compatibility flags, or injected performance tools until the game starts normally. Restore them one at a time; if the crash returns after a specific tool is re-enabled, you have isolated a conflict rather than permanently blaming the game.

When Steam still shows “Launching”
Check whether the process appears briefly in Task Manager and disappears. An immediate disappearance after file verification commonly warrants checking Windows and driver updates, while a persistent launcher state warrants restarting Steam, confirming account ownership, and checking whether another Steam process is stuck. Do not repeatedly delete random folders or registry entries; those actions can create a second problem and are not a documented first-line repair.
Microsoft Store and Xbox app on PC
Use the same Microsoft account in both apps
Sign in to the Microsoft Store with the account that purchased or has access to FH5, and sign in to the Xbox app with the account intended for play. A mismatch can leave the game visible but prevent entitlement or identity checks from completing. After correcting the accounts, close both apps, reopen them, and try again.
Update the Store, Xbox app and Gaming Services
- Open Microsoft Store > Library and select Get updates.
- Open the Xbox app and install any offered app update.
- Allow updates for Gaming Services and Xbox Identity Provider if they appear in the Store library.
- Restart Windows and launch FH5 from the same storefront in which it is installed.
Gaming Services is a dependency, not the game itself. If it is missing, stuck, or partially updated, FH5 can fail before a game window appears even when the game files are intact.

Repair, then reset the affected app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and use Repair.
- Repeat the repair for Microsoft Store and, where listed, Gaming Services.
- Restart and test.
- If repair changes nothing, return to the same screen and use Reset for the affected app. Resetting signs the app out and clears its local app state; it does not erase the installed game, but you will need to sign in again.
Use reset deliberately, after recording which account is supposed to own the game. If the game is installed on an external or nearly full drive, confirm that the drive is connected and has space before resetting app state.

Xbox console
- Open My games & apps > Manage > Updates and install the FH5 update.
- Check Settings > System > Updates for a console update.
- Quit FH5 completely from the Home screen, restart the console, and test again.
- Check internal storage and the installation’s update status. If the installation remains damaged after updates and a restart, reinstalling is a later option; ensure your saves are synchronized before removing the local copy.
Console steps do not use Windows repair menus, Steam file verification, or PC driver updates. If other games also fail to start, treat the issue as a broader console, account, or service problem rather than an FH5-only file problem.

Cloud sessions do not provide local file-integrity repair. Confirm the subscription or purchase entitlement, sign in with the correct account, test another supported network, and check whether the service can start other cloud games. A black screen or disconnect in the cloud session is not evidence that a local FH5 installation is corrupted.

Choose the next step by where startup stops

These branches are diagnostic priorities, not guarantees. The same symptom can have different causes on different editions, which is why the storefront and account checks come before increasingly invasive changes.
Collect evidence before contacting support
If FH5 still will not launch, stop cycling through random fixes and prepare a precise report. Turn 10 Studios says its Troubleshooting Hub is organized into Known Issues, Report New Issues, and Closed categories for status tracking and workarounds. It also specifically directs players not to submit game crashes, lost saves, or player reports there; those should continue through the Forza Support website.
- Edition and storefront: Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox app, Xbox console, or cloud.
- Windows version and build, if using PC.
- GPU model and driver version, if using PC.
- Available storage on the installation drive.
- Exact error text or code, including capitalization.
- Where startup stops and how long it remains there.
- Whether the issue began after a game, Windows, driver, or launcher update.
- Every step already attempted and its result.
Use the official Forza Support route for crashes, lost saves, and player-specific cases. The studio has continued investigating and fixing bugs through monthly series updates, so include the current game version and date of the failure instead of assuming an old workaround still applies.

What not to do
- Do not treat a controller purchase as a launch repair; an Xbox-compatible controller affects input compatibility, not whether the executable, account, or services initialize.
- Do not assume freeing disk space fixes every launch failure. It matters when the drive is below the published 110 GB minimum or lacks temporary update room.
- Do not delete saves or reinstall before checking account synchronization and recording evidence.
- Do not apply Steam verification to an Xbox app installation, or Windows app reset steps to an Xbox console.
- Do not submit crash reports to the Troubleshooting Hub when the studio says to use Forza Support for those cases.
