Check Epic Games Public Status before changing anything on your device. If Fortnite, Login, Game Services, or Matchmaking is degraded, wait for Epic’s incident update; if those systems are operational, restart Fortnite and your network equipment, then test a mobile hotspot or wired connection to identify a home-network problem.

Start by identifying which layer failed

“Fortnite won’t connect” can describe three different failures: Epic’s services are unavailable, your Epic account cannot authenticate, or the game can sign in but cannot establish a match or network session. The quickest fix depends on separating those layers before you reset settings.

What you see Most likely layer First action
Cannot sign in, or the launcher keeps asking you to authenticate Epic login or account services Check the Login component on Epic Games Public Status and wait if an incident is active.
Logged in successfully, but matchmaking returns error #1, #2, or #3 Server maintenance or your network path Check Matchmaking and Game Services status before troubleshooting locally.
Matchmaking error #5 or #7 Fortnite could not connect you to a match Check status, fully restart Fortnite, then test your connection.
ESP or other network error Local router, Wi-Fi, ISP, firewall, proxy, or an Epic service incident Restart the modem, router, and computer; disable VPN or proxy software; test another connection.
Fortnite works on a phone hotspot but not home Wi-Fi Home router, Wi-Fi configuration, or ISP path Troubleshoot the home network or contact the ISP; the game itself is reaching Epic over the alternate connection.
It fails on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and a hotspot while Epic reports operational Device, installation, account, or an issue not yet reflected on the status page Record the exact code and escalate to Epic Player Support.

Check Epic’s service status before changing settings

Open Epic Games Public Status and inspect each component separately: Fortnite, Login, Game Services, and Matchmaking. A green Fortnite indicator does not automatically prove that login or matchmaking is healthy, so read all four entries and the incident history.

Status information changes quickly. A page snapshot used for this troubleshooting sequence recorded scheduled Fortnite version 42.40 downtime beginning October 15, 2026 at 08:00 UTC and completing at 10:02 UTC. It also recorded an EOS Sessions and Lobbies incident on October 16, 2026: investigation began at 22:20 UTC and the incident was marked resolved at 23:17 UTC. Those entries are historical examples, not a guarantee that services are available when you read this; refresh the page immediately before retrying.

If an incident is active

  • Do not repeatedly change DNS, firewall, router, or account settings while Epic is investigating. Local changes cannot restore a disabled service and can make later diagnosis harder.
  • Keep the status page open and watch for a change from investigating or identified to monitoring or resolved.
  • Retry only after the relevant component changes state. A Fortnite-wide incident requires a different response from a Login-only incident.

If every component is operational

Move to the local checks in the order below. Record the current error text and number first, because changing several settings at once removes useful clues.

Recover a login failure

Epic describes login incidents as events that can prevent players from signing in or updating the game and directs players to Fortnite Status for updates. If Login is degraded, the correct action is to wait for the service update rather than repeatedly resetting your connection.

  1. Check Login, Game Services, and Fortnite on Epic Games Public Status.
  2. If Login has an active incident, wait for the incident to be resolved or for Epic to post a recovery update.
  3. Once Login is operational, close Fortnite completely. On a PC, exit the game rather than leaving it suspended; on a console, use the platform’s normal close or quit command.
  4. Relaunch Fortnite and try to authenticate once.
  5. If the same login error remains while all components are operational, test the connection steps in the network section and preserve the exact message for support.

Repeated login attempts during an outage do not speed recovery. They can also leave you unsure whether a later attempt occurred before or after Epic restored service, which is why the status timestamp matters.

Fix Fortnite matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3

Epic says errors #1, #2, and #3 are mainly caused by server maintenance or a network connection issue. Treat them as a two-branch diagnosis rather than as proof that your installation is damaged.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

When Matchmaking or Game Services is degraded

  1. Confirm that the Matchmaking or Game Services component is marked degraded, investigating, or unavailable.
  2. Leave Fortnite closed while the incident is active if you have already confirmed the error.
  3. Refresh the status page after Epic posts a recovery update.
  4. Relaunch Fortnite and try matchmaking once.

When Epic reports normal service

  1. Close Fortnite completely and relaunch it.
  2. Restart the modem and router, then restart the computer or console. Allow the network equipment to finish reconnecting before opening the game.
  3. Temporarily disable any VPN or proxy software and try again.
  4. Test Fortnite on a mobile hotspot or another independent connection. This comparison tells you whether the problem follows the device or stays on the home network.

If the alternate connection succeeds, focus on the router, Wi-Fi path, or ISP rather than reinstalling Fortnite. If it fails everywhere while Epic remains operational, keep the exact error number and escalate.

Fix matchmaking errors #5 and #7

Epic’s description for error #5 is direct: it appears when Fortnite is unable to connect you to a match. Error #7 generally represents the same practical symptom—a player cannot be connected to a match—even though the displayed number differs.

  1. Check Epic Games Public Status, including Matchmaking and Game Services.
  2. If either component is affected, wait for the incident to change before attempting more repairs.
  3. If status is normal, close and relaunch Fortnite.
  4. Restart the modem, router, and gaming device.
  5. Disable VPN or proxy software temporarily.
  6. Try an Ethernet connection or a mobile hotspot. An Ethernet test removes the Wi-Fi radio and local wireless interference from the path; a hotspot tests a different ISP route.

Do not interpret a successful login as proof that matchmaking must work. Authentication and the later connection to a game session use different service steps, so a player can reach the lobby while Matchmaking is degraded.

Resolve ESP and other network errors

For ESP or general network errors, Epic recommends restarting the modem, router, and computer, disabling VPN or proxy software, and testing a different connection. Follow that sequence before making advanced Windows changes.

Basic network restart

  1. Close Fortnite and any Epic launcher window.
  2. Turn off or unplug the modem and router.
  3. Wait until both devices have fully powered down, then power the modem back on and allow it to reconnect to the ISP.
  4. Power the router back on and wait for its normal internet indicator.
  5. Restart the computer or console.
  6. Open Fortnite and retry the action that produced the error.

Restarting the router is different from pressing a factory-reset button. Use a normal power cycle; a factory reset erases configuration and is not justified by a single Fortnite error.

Remove VPN and proxy variables

Disable VPN software and any configured proxy temporarily, then retry. A VPN or proxy changes the route and can make a healthy home connection appear to be an Epic or Fortnite failure. Re-enable it after testing if you need it for another purpose; the test is not a recommendation to leave security software off permanently.

Use a second connection as a controlled test

  1. Enable a mobile hotspot on a phone with cellular data.
  2. Connect the gaming device to that hotspot instead of the usual Wi-Fi.
  3. Launch Fortnite and attempt login or matchmaking once.
  4. Disconnect from the hotspot and restore the normal connection after the test.

A hotspot test is diagnostic, not a permanent gaming solution. It may consume mobile data and can have higher latency. Its value is that it changes the ISP and access path while leaving the Fortnite account and device largely unchanged.

What the hotspot result tells you

Result What it indicates Next move
Works on hotspot, fails on home Wi-Fi The device and account can reach Fortnite; the home router, Wi-Fi configuration, or ISP path is the leading suspect. Try Ethernet, inspect router or ISP restrictions, and contact the ISP if the wired path also fails.
Fails on hotspot and home Wi-Fi on one device The problem may be local to that device, its game installation, platform network settings, or account session. Apply the platform-appropriate checks, then contact Epic with the exact code if the failure persists.
Every device on the home network fails The fault is more likely the router, ISP connection, or an upstream service path than one Fortnite installation. Test Ethernet if available and ask the ISP to investigate the connection.
Only one device fails while others play normally The issue is scoped to that PC or console rather than the whole home connection. Compare that device on Ethernet or hotspot and use its platform’s network diagnostics.
All connections fail while Epic components are operational A local installation, account, device, or unlisted service issue remains possible. Preserve evidence and escalate to Epic Player Support.

Epic notes that a wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi for large downloads. Ethernet is therefore useful both for downloading an update and for isolating whether wireless conditions are involved. A cable cannot repair an Epic outage; it only changes the connection path.

Windows checks after Epic confirms normal service

The additional checks below are Windows-oriented. Use them only after checking status and recording the current error. Change one item at a time, retry Fortnite, and note the result so you can undo an unsuccessful change.

Flush the DNS cache

  1. Close Fortnite.
  2. Open Command Prompt with the normal Windows search.
  3. Run ipconfig /flushdns.
  4. Wait for the confirmation message, restart Fortnite, and test again.

Flushing DNS clears locally cached name lookups; it does not change your Epic account, repair game files, or bypass an outage.

Check the Windows Hosts file

Epic’s Windows guidance includes resetting the Windows Hosts file when name resolution has been altered. A modified Hosts file can redirect or block a service even when ordinary websites load. Review the file at C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts using an administrator account and follow Epic’s official reset procedure rather than deleting entries blindly. Save a backup before changing it so an unrelated custom entry can be restored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review firewall and proxy settings

Confirm that Windows Firewall or third-party security software is not blocking Fortnite or the Epic launcher, and verify that an unwanted system proxy is not enabled. Do not permanently disable protection as a fix. Use a brief, controlled test, then restore the protection and create an appropriate allow rule if your security product identifies a legitimate block.

Whitelist Epic domains

Epic’s Windows-oriented troubleshooting also calls for allowing its required domains through security software. Use the domain list in Epic’s current support instructions; domain names can change, so do not copy an old list from an unrelated forum. Apply the allow rule only in the firewall, DNS filter, or security product that is actually blocking the connection.

Disable background applications

Close overlays, download managers, traffic shapers, and other background applications temporarily. The goal is to remove competing network or overlay software as a variable, not to leave the computer in a permanently stripped-down state. Re-enable applications one at a time after Fortnite works so you can identify a conflict.

Choose the right branch: service, account, Wi-Fi, or ISP

Use these comparisons when two causes still seem plausible:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Service-side versus local: an incident on Epic Games Public Status affecting the same component and time window points to Epic; a failure limited to one device or one household network points local.
  • Login versus matchmaking: inability to authenticate is a Login problem; reaching the lobby but failing to join a match is a Matchmaking or connection-path problem.
  • Wi-Fi versus ISP or upstream path: Ethernet success with Wi-Fi failure points to wireless conditions; failure on both home Wi-Fi and Ethernet but success on a hotspot points toward the home router or ISP.
  • One platform versus all devices: one PC or console failing while another device plays normally narrows the investigation to that platform; simultaneous failure everywhere warrants a network or service check.

Common mistakes that prolong recovery

  • Reinstalling during an outage: a new installation cannot restore Login or Matchmaking services and may create a large download while the service is still unavailable.
  • Changing several settings at once: resetting DNS, replacing the Hosts file, disabling security software, and changing router settings together makes it impossible to tell which change mattered.
  • Assuming a green Fortnite indicator covers every service: Login, Game Services, and Matchmaking are reported separately.
  • Using a hotspot as proof that Fortnite is fixed: it proves only that the alternate path works. Your home connection still needs investigation.
  • Factory-resetting the router: a normal restart is the recommended first action. A factory reset can erase ISP credentials, Wi-Fi names, port rules, and other settings.
  • Retrying without recording the code: error numbers such as #1, #2, #3, #5, and #7 distinguish different stages of the connection. Write down the exact number and wording before troubleshooting.

When to contact Epic Player Support

Escalate when Fortnite fails on your normal connection and an independent hotspot or wired test, while Epic reports the relevant services operational. Also escalate when the same error persists after a full restart and the Windows checks appropriate to your setup.

Include useful, non-sensitive details:

  • The exact error code and complete message, including whether it is #1, #2, #3, #5, #7, or an ESP/network error.
  • Your platform and operating system version where relevant.
  • The approximate time of each attempt, preferably in UTC, and the status-page state at that time.
  • Whether Login succeeded and whether the failure occurred in the lobby or while joining a match.
  • Whether the game worked on Ethernet, home Wi-Fi, and a mobile hotspot.
  • Which steps you completed, including a normal modem/router restart and any Windows change.

Do not send passwords, authentication codes, or other account secrets in a support ticket. The exact error and connection comparison are more useful than a long list of unrelated tweaks.

A compact recovery sequence

  1. Open Epic Games Public Status and inspect Fortnite, Login, Game Services, and Matchmaking.
  2. If the affected component has an incident, wait for Epic’s update and recheck before changing local settings.
  3. If status is normal, close and relaunch Fortnite.
  4. Restart the modem, router, and gaming device.
  5. Disable VPN or proxy software for a controlled test.
  6. Try Ethernet or a mobile hotspot.
  7. If hotspot works, troubleshoot the home router or ISP; if every path fails, preserve the exact code and contact Epic Player Support.
  8. On Windows, only after those checks, flush DNS, review the Hosts file, check firewall and proxy rules, whitelist required Epic domains, and test with background applications closed.
