There is no universal winner. Choose Fortnite when your priority is getting a mixed-device group into the same game, especially across consoles, PC, and mobile. Choose Apex Legends when you want named characters with distinct abilities, deliberate squad coordination, and a clearly documented Ranked/Unranked structure.
Both games are free to start and support cross-platform play. The practical choice comes down to the platforms your friends use, your PC’s published requirements, and whether you prefer a broad social ecosystem or a hero-based tactical format.

The table reveals an important qualification: on the listed minimum RAM figures alone, Apex has the lower floor at 6 GB, while Fortnite lists 8 GB. Minimum specifications are not an FPS guarantee, and the two publishers may define their guidance under different testing assumptions. Check the complete requirement page for your operating system and graphics hardware before deciding that either game will run well on an older machine.

Fortnite is the practical choice for a mixed-device friend group
Fortnite has the broader platform list in the supplied documentation. A group can include PC players, both generations of PlayStation and Xbox, either listed Switch generation, and supported Android or iOS/iPadOS devices. That breadth is its biggest objective advantage in this comparison: fewer friends are excluded simply because they own a different type of hardware.

- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.

- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.

Epic explicitly identifies Fortnite as one of its first-party crossplay games. That does not make every account, region, feature, or parental-control setting identical, but it does establish cross-platform play as part of the game’s supported ecosystem. If your first question is, “Can everyone in our group install the same game?” Fortnite is usually the safer starting point when the group spans console, computer, and mobile.
Apex is the better fit for ability-driven squad tactics
Electronic Arts describes Apex Legends around Legends with individual skills and deep tactical squad play. Your choice is therefore not only about weapons or map movement; it also involves selecting a character and coordinating the way the squad’s abilities work together. Players who enjoy role definition, communication, and planning around a team’s composition will find that identity more explicit than a generic battle-royale checklist.
Apex also gives its competitive audience a formal mode structure. Ranked and Unranked are documented as Core modes, so you can separate progression-focused sessions from lower-pressure matches without relying solely on a community convention. If you want your regular game to have an obvious ranked path, Apex has the clearer published answer.

Where Fortnite can be played
The current Epic platform list supplied for this comparison includes PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Android, and iOS/iPadOS. Mobile availability can depend on operating-system version, storefront rules, and region, so regard the list as a starting point rather than a guarantee for every handset.
Where Apex can be played
EA’s listed platforms are PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the EA App and Steam. The supplied list does not include an Apex mobile edition. If one member of your group plays only on a phone or tablet, that difference can decide the question before gameplay preferences matter.
What crossplay means in practice
Crossplay lets supported platforms share multiplayer sessions; it does not remove the need for each player to install the game, create or use the required account, and add friends through the game’s social system. Apex cross-platform play is enabled by default according to EA. Epic identifies Fortnite as a crossplay title, but account, privacy, and platform settings can still affect invitations.

- List every player’s device. Separate PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Android, and iOS/iPadOS rather than assuming that “console” is one category.
- Check the overlap. Fortnite has the wider documented overlap, especially when mobile is involved. Apex’s documented set covers console and PC but not mobile.
- Install the same free game. Use each platform’s official store or launcher and allow the game to finish its first update before trying to party up.
- Sign in to the required game account. Crossplay invitations generally use the game’s account identity, not only a console-friends list.
- Add one another in the in-game social menu. Menu names and privacy controls can change with live-service updates, so follow the label shown in your current build.
- Test a private or low-stakes session first. This catches voice-chat permissions, parental restrictions, and account-region issues before a ranked match.
If a friend cannot join, verify the game version, platform support, account privacy settings, and whether crossplay has been manually disabled. Do not assume that a failed invitation proves the game lacks crossplay.
Modes, pacing, and competition
Apex has a documented menu for different commitments
Apex’s published mode guide lists Ranked and Unranked as Core modes. It also identifies Wildcard, Bot Royale Evolved, Mixtape, limited-time modes, and Private Match. That range matters when your group does not always want the same type of session.
- Classic Battle Royale: EA describes the standard match as a 60-person format.
- Ranked: A formal progression-oriented mode for players who want competitive placement and a persistent ladder.
- Unranked: The other Core option when you want the standard experience without ranked progression.
- Wildcard: Matches are described as approximately 15 minutes with 30 players, making it a shorter commitment than the classic format.
- Bot Royale Evolved: Supports up to 60 players and is an alternative when you want a different opponent mix or a less conventional session.
- Mixtape, limited-time modes, and Private Match: Additional ways to vary the session, although availability can change as the live service rotates content.
EA says Apex seasons are approximately three months long. That cadence helps explain why ranked progress, event content, and mode availability can shift during the year; treat any current menu as time-sensitive.
Fortnite should be chosen for access, not an assumed mode comparison
The official Fortnite material supplied here establishes platforms and crossplay but does not provide a complete, current mechanics or mode inventory. It would be inaccurate to claim that Fortnite has a particular ranked structure, player count, or queue behavior based only on this evidence. If your decision depends on one specific Fortnite playlist, check the current in-game Discover or mode screen after installing it.
That limitation does not make Fortnite a poor choice. It simply means the strongest supported reason to pick it in this comparison is its platform reach and social convenience, rather than a feature-by-feature claim about every current playlist.

How to interpret the numbers
“Minimum” means the publisher considers the configuration eligible for the game; it does not promise a stable frame rate, high visual settings, or fast loading. CPU generation, graphics-driver support, thermal throttling, background applications, and available disk space all affect the result. Apex’s 75 GB storage requirement is explicit, while the supplied Fortnite figures do not state a storage number.
If your computer has between 6 GB and 8 GB of RAM, Apex has the lower published memory requirement, but that does not automatically make it faster. Its listed graphics card requirement is also more specific, and your system must run 64-bit Windows 10. If you have 8 GB or more and graphics close to Fortnite’s minimum, Fortnite is within its published floor; 16 GB gives more headroom against paging and background-task slowdowns.
A sensible pre-install check
- Open your operating system’s system-information panel and record the exact CPU model, installed RAM, graphics adapter, Windows edition, and free storage.
- Compare the processor and graphics model, not just the amount of RAM, with the publisher’s minimum line.
- Leave additional free space beyond the stated game size for updates and temporary files; Apex explicitly lists 75 GB, but live-service patches can require working room.
- Update the graphics driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer and restart before the first launch.
- Close unnecessary launchers and overlays during the first test so you can distinguish game performance from background load.
- Start with conservative visual settings and observe stability in an actual match, not only the main menu.
Do not buy memory or a graphics card solely because a comparison says one game is “easier.” Use the exact requirement, then check whether your whole system—not one component—meets it.
Free-to-play, battle passes, and spending
What “free” covers
Both titles are free-to-play: you can download the game and enter its multiplayer ecosystem without purchasing a boxed copy. Optional spending can cover cosmetics or progression-related items. A paid battle pass, where offered in the current season, is not the same as an admission fee; it is an optional track layered on top of the free game.
Seasonal offers, prices, and included items can change, so check the purchase screen in your region before paying. Neither the title nor the platform list guarantees that every cosmetic, pass, or promotion is available in every country.
Apex’s explicit position on gameplay advantage
Electronic Arts’ Apex Legends FAQ states:
"No. In Apex Legends, we don’t sell any items that offer a gameplay advantage. When you enter the Ring, no player will have an advantage based on how much they have spent."

That is EA’s stated policy for Apex. It means a purchase is not supposed to improve a player’s combat statistics or give a paid competitive edge, while cosmetic and progression purchases remain optional.

What you should verify in Fortnite
The supplied Fortnite facts establish free access and cross-platform availability but do not include an equivalent publisher quotation about item advantages or a current pass price. You do not need to buy a pass to start playing, but read the description of any item before purchase and treat seasonal terms as changeable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controller, keyboard, mouse, and headset requirements
You do not need a dedicated gaming headset or premium controller to begin either game. A headset can make squad communication easier, but it is an accessory rather than a stated system requirement.
EA explicitly documents Xbox and PlayStation controller support for Apex on PC. That makes Apex a straightforward choice if you already own one of those controllers and prefer analog movement. Console players can use the standard controller supplied for their platform.
The supplied Fortnite material does not give a separate controller-compatibility matrix. On a console or mobile device, use the input method supported by that platform; on PC, check the current in-game control settings and your operating system’s detected device. Do not purchase a controller solely on the assumption that it is mandatory.

Decision guide: pick the game that matches your group
Pick Fortnite when most of these statements are true
- Your friends are split among PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC, and possibly mobile.
- You want the widest documented chance that everyone can install a supported version.
- Your group values getting into one shared social space more than a formal ranked ladder.
- You want to test a free game before buying any accessory or seasonal content.
- Your PC meets Fortnite’s 8 GB minimum and you prefer its broader device reach, even though Apex lists a 6 GB RAM minimum.
Pick Apex Legends when most of these statements are true
- You want characters with individual abilities to shape squad tactics.
- You specifically want documented Ranked and Unranked Core modes.
- Your friends are on the listed console and PC platforms rather than mobile.
- You like having alternatives such as a roughly 15-minute, 30-player Wildcard match or a Bot Royale Evolved session for up to 60 players.
- Your PC is compatible with Windows 10 64-bit, the listed graphics floor, and 75 GB of storage.
- You prefer a publisher statement that spending does not provide gameplay advantage.
When the decision is genuinely tied
If everyone owns a supported console or PC and both games run acceptably, invite the group to try one session of each. Keep the comparison fair: use the same controller or keyboard setup, the same voice-chat arrangement, and similar session length. Judge which game your group voluntarily wants to play again, rather than treating a single unfamiliar match as proof of superiority.
Common pitfalls and fixes
“My friend is on a different console, so crossplay must be broken.”
First verify that both players are on supported platforms, fully updated builds, and the same regional service. Then check account privacy and crossplay settings. Apex enables cross-platform play by default, while Fortnite is identified by Epic as a crossplay title; an account restriction can still block an invitation.
“The minimum RAM number tells me which game will run faster.”
It does not. Apex lists 6 GB and Fortnite lists 8 GB, but processor, graphics adapter, operating system, drivers, thermals, and storage also matter. Compare the complete specification, then test at conservative settings.
“Free means every feature is unlocked forever.”
Free entry means you can start without buying the game. Seasonal cosmetics, progression tracks, and other optional items may be sold, and their availability can change. You can decline those purchases and still begin playing.
“A headset or pro controller is required to compete.”
Neither is listed as a requirement. Use the input device you already have, make sure voice permissions work, and upgrade only if a specific comfort or communication problem justifies the expense.
Bottom line for different readers
For a family or friend group scattered across many device types, start with Fortnite because its documented platform coverage is broader, including mobile systems. For a squad that wants character abilities, tactical coordination, and a formal Ranked/Unranked choice, start with Apex Legends. On an older PC, compare the full requirements rather than repeating a slogan: Apex’s published minimum is 6 GB RAM, Fortnite’s is 8 GB, and Apex additionally lists Windows 10 64-bit and 75 GB of storage. Both are free to try, so the best final test is whether your group can install the same supported build and enjoys returning to it.
