A Fortnite island code usually fails for one of six reasons: a mistyped digit, an unpublished or disabled island, a private playtest code, a release that is no longer active, a map that is unlisted rather than searchable, or a Fortnite service problem. Start by entering the code again in Fortnite’s island-code entry flow, then confirm the creator’s current release state. An island can be perfectly valid and still be absent from Discover.
Fast diagnosis: work through these checks in order
- Recheck every character. Epic’s 2023 guidance for an invalid code is to “Triple-check that every digit in your island code is correct.” Do not rely on memory or a screenshot with a partially hidden digit; copy the complete code again from the creator.
- Enter the code directly. Use Fortnite’s island-code entry flow rather than judging the code from a Discover search. Unlisted islands can be played by anyone who has the code but do not appear in Discover.
- Ask which release is active. The creator may have a listed, unlisted, private, unpublished, rejected, or disabled version. Only a published and enabled release can be played publicly.
- Check whether it is a private-version code. Private codes are for playtesting. They are not public island codes and do not pass the normal public moderation path.
- Check moderation or disablement. Epic says a disabled island “cannot be played, opened, or playtested.” A creator must read the reason in Creator Portal, correct the issue, and resubmit or use the available appeal path.
- Check live service status. If several unrelated islands fail, look at Epic Games Public Status, the @FortniteStatus account, and Fortnite’s known-issue channels before changing local settings.
This sequence separates a bad code from a valid code whose island is unavailable, hidden from Discover, or affected by an outage.

What the main Fortnite error states mean
“Invalid island code”
Invalid normally means Fortnite cannot match the characters you entered to an available island code. A single wrong digit is enough. Re-enter the code from the original source, including every digit and separator shown by Fortnite. If the same code fails for everyone, ask the creator to verify that it is the current code for a published release rather than an old or private version.
“Island unavailable”
Unavailable is broader than invalid. The code may be correctly formatted, but the associated island is unpublished, disabled, rejected, private, or temporarily affected by a service issue. The creator’s release and moderation state matter as much as the characters in the code.

“Expired”
Epic’s public documentation does not define one universal expiration timer for public island codes. Treat an “expired” message as a prompt to verify three things: the creator’s release is still published and enabled, the code was copied correctly, and Fortnite has no current outage or known issue. Do not assume that every public code automatically expires after a fixed number of days.
Release states: listed, unlisted, private, and unpublished
The creator’s release state determines whether a code can be used and where players can find the island.

A code’s absence from Discover is therefore not proof that it is broken. An unlisted island is intentionally omitted from that surface while remaining playable by people who have the code.

Moderation states that can block a working code
Approved release
An approved release can be live as a listed or unlisted island. Discover placement is separate from basic code validity: Epic says approved islands “constantly move into and out of the Discover section,” and Player Support cannot control when a specific map appears there.

Rejected release
A rejected release has not passed the required moderation process, so the new version is not available as a public island. The creator should read the moderation reason in Creator Portal, correct the violating content or metadata, and submit a corrected release.
Disabled island
Disabling removes access even if players still have an old code. Epic states that disabled islands cannot be played, opened, or playtested. The creator must follow the reason shown in Creator Portal, make the required fix, and resubmit or use the available appeal path.
A failed new release does not automatically remove a currently live release. Epic’s Island Moderation Tips and FAQs state: “A failed release does not affect a currently live island, and so your last approved release remains as the current version.” If players suddenly lose access, the creator should check whether the old release was separately unpublished or disabled rather than assuming every failed submission caused the outage.

1. Obtain the code from the original source
Return to the creator’s official post, video description, profile, or message and copy the complete code. Avoid manually transcribing a code when possible. Compare each digit visually with the source before submitting it.

2. Use the direct code-entry flow
Open Fortnite’s island-code entry flow and submit the code there. A search result in Discover is not a substitute for direct entry because unlisted islands are intentionally absent from Discover.
3. Test whether the problem is specific to you
Ask another player to enter the same code. If the code works for others, the island is probably published and the problem is limited to your account, platform, connection, or current Fortnite client. If it fails for everyone, focus on the creator’s release or moderation state.
4. Confirm the release state with the creator
Ask a precise question: “Is this the current listed or unlisted public release, or is it a private playtest code?” Also ask whether the project is currently published, approved, and enabled. This avoids confusing an older code with the active release.

5. Check Fortnite and Epic service notices
When multiple players or unrelated islands fail, consult Epic Games Public Status, @FortniteStatus, and Fortnite’s known-issue channels. A service incident can make a valid code appear unavailable; changing the code or repeatedly reinstalling the game will not resolve a server-side problem.

6. Record the exact result
Note the full message, platform, account, region, time, and whether another player can load the island. Those details tell the creator or Epic Support whether the failure is a typo, a release-state problem, or a localized issue.
Why a published island may be missing from Discover
Discover is a recommendation and visibility surface, not a complete directory of every published island. Listed islands are eligible for Discover, but Epic says approved islands constantly move into and out of that section. Player Support cannot control when a specific map appears there.
An unlisted island is expected to be absent from Discover. If the creator gave you a valid unlisted code, direct entry is the correct way to play it. If a listed island disappears, ask the creator to confirm that the current release is still approved and enabled; do not infer that the code expired merely because the tile is no longer visible.

Verify which version is live
Open Creator Portal and identify the release that is currently approved and live. Compare its public code with the one being shared. A new submission can fail while the previous approved release remains live, so publishing a replacement does not necessarily change the code players should use.
When private-code publishing shows “PRIVATE CODE FAILED”
Epic’s guidance for this content-service error is to wait 24–48 hours and try publishing the private version again. If the failure continues after that waiting period, contact Epic Support. The 24–48 hours is a retry interval for this creator-facing error, not a universal expiration period for public island codes.
When moderation rejects or disables the island
- Read the reason attached to the release in Creator Portal.
- Remove or correct the content, metadata, or configuration identified in the notice.
- Submit the corrected release for moderation.
- If the decision appears incorrect, use the appeal path available in the portal.
- Tell players whether the previous approved release is still live and provide its current code.
Do not tell players to keep retrying a disabled or unpublished island. Those states block play until the creator restores an approved, enabled release.
Use the failure pattern to narrow the cause

Scope checks: account, platform, region, and service
Compare the failure across the dimensions that can change the diagnosis: code validity, release state, moderation state, visibility surface, service health, and scope. Scope means whether the issue affects everyone or only one account, platform, or region.

- Only one account fails: capture the exact message and compare with another account before concluding that the island is offline.
- Only one platform fails: compare with a second supported platform and check platform-specific known issues.
- Only one region appears affected: record the region and time, then consult current service notices; do not label the code expired without confirmation from the creator.
- Only Discover is affected: use direct code entry and verify whether the island is unlisted or simply outside the current Discover rotation.
What not to assume
- “It is not in Discover, so the code is invalid.” Unlisted islands are designed to be accessed by code without appearing in Discover.
- “Expired means every code has a fixed timer.” Epic has not published one universal expiration timer for public island codes.
- “A private code is the public code.” Private-version codes are for playtesting and are not publicly accessible.
- “A failed release deleted the live map.” Epic says a failed release does not affect a currently live island; the last approved release remains current.
- “Retrying will fix a disabled island.” A disabled island cannot be played, opened, or playtested until the creator resolves the moderation issue or uses the available appeal process.
When to contact Epic Support
Contact Epic Support after checking the code, confirming the creator’s release state, and reviewing current service notices. Include the exact island code, the complete error text, your platform and region, the time of the failure, whether other players can load the island, and any Creator Portal moderation message. For a private-code publishing failure, include that you waited the recommended 24–48 hours and still received “PRIVATE CODE FAILED.”
Bottom line
Start with the digits, then verify the release. A typo explains most “invalid” messages; an unlisted release explains many missing Discover results; private, unpublished, rejected, or disabled releases explain genuine unavailability. If the same code fails for everyone or many islands fail at once, check the creator’s Creator Portal status and Epic’s live-service channels before treating the code as expired.
