Fortnite’s Item Shop is where you buy cosmetics; quests and other eligible in-game offers are ways to earn some items without buying them. A quest reward is not automatically available in the shop, and a shop item is not free just because it appears alongside free rewards. What you can earn—and how long you have—depends on the specific offer, experience, and season.
Item Shop vs. quest rewards: what is the difference?
| Question | Item Shop | Quest rewards |
|---|---|---|
| How do you get the item? | Purchase a listed cosmetic or other in-game item through the shop. | Complete a listed quest or its stated requirements to claim the reward. |
| Is it free? | Shop cosmetics are purchases unless a specific official offer says otherwise. | Some quests award items without a purchase, but requirements and eligibility vary. A quest may award XP or levels rather than a cosmetic. |
| Where do you check? | Look at the in-game Item Shop or Epic’s official web shop. | Open Quests from the Fortnite lobby and select the relevant experience. |
| How long is it available? | Shop inventory changes; check whether the item is currently listed. | Quest windows may be limited. Epic says many free items are seasonal. |
Epic describes the Item Shop as a place to discover and purchase in-game items. Quests are a separate route: completing them can grant rewards, but the reward and conditions are defined by each quest. See Epic’s Item Shop FAQ and quest instructions.

How to find quests that may reward cosmetics
- From the Fortnite lobby, open Quests.
- Choose the relevant Fortnite experience and review its quest list. Epic says experiences including Rocket Racing, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, LEGO Fortnite Brick Life, and Fortnite Festival have their own quests.
- Read the task, eligibility, reward, and any time limit shown for the quest before you start.
- Complete the listed requirements in the relevant experience, then check the quest or reward screen for completion and claim instructions.
Not every quest offers a cosmetic: rewards can include XP or levels. Epic’s guide explains how to complete quests and notes that quest sets differ between experiences.

Quests are not the only possible route. Epic’s free-items guidance lists in-game challenges, free Battle Pass content, and account security with two-factor authentication (2FA) among possible ways to get free items. These are not blanket guarantees: the particular item, offer, and eligibility determine what is available. Check Epic’s official account-security guidance and the terms of the specific offer; the cited information does not establish a currently active 2026 2FA cosmetic reward.

Can a free quest cosmetic later appear in the Item Shop?
Sometimes an event’s rewards may later be offered for purchase, but that is not a universal return policy. In its May 2, 2023 Find the Force announcement, Epic said items from that event’s free and Premium Reward Tracks were not exclusive and might become Item Shop purchases later. That statement applied to the event; it does not confirm that any particular quest reward will return.
Time limits matter, too. Epic’s August 30, 2022 Play Your Way announcement described a quest event with cosmetic rewards tied to specified completion thresholds and a deadline of September 6, 2022 at 8 AM ET. It is a historical example of an event-specific window, not a current offer or a schedule for future rewards.

How to check whether an offer is real
- Verify current quest rewards and deadlines in the in-game Quests area, and confirm shop listings in Fortnite or Epic’s official web shop.
- Look for promotion details on official Epic Games properties and channels. Epic warns that suspicious external offers for free Epic products or V-Bucks may be scams.
- Do not treat an unofficial screenshot, message, or promise of free V-Bucks or cosmetics as proof that an offer exists.
The official guidance establishes general ways to obtain free items, not the live cosmetic rewards, quest requirements, or deadlines for October 2026. Check the game and official Fortnite announcements for the offer you are considering.
