There is no universal winner: Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks offer different growth, profitability and valuation profiles, so portfolio fit depends on your time horizon, risk tolerance, existing holdings and the price you pay. Fortinet’s latest reported quarter showed strong product growth and cash generation; Palo Alto Networks reported faster revenue growth and rapid growth in next-generation security annual recurring revenue, alongside a much higher forward P/E in an October 2, 2026 snapshot.
What the two companies do
Fortinet: secure networking and security operations
Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT) describes its Security Fabric as spanning secure networking, unified Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) and AI-driven security operations. That combination makes its results particularly relevant to investors weighing security software against network-security products and related infrastructure demand.

Palo Alto Networks: a broader platform portfolio
Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ: PANW) describes offerings across Network, Cloud, Security Operations, AI and Identity, including its Network & AI Security, Cortex and Idira platforms. Its reported NGS ARR—annual recurring revenue associated with its next-generation security business—and remaining performance obligations offer additional indicators of subscription and contracted demand, but they are not directly interchangeable with Fortinet’s billings or product revenue.

#1 Best Overall
| Measure | Fortinet | Palo Alto Networks |
|---|---|---|
| Latest reported revenue | $2.05 billion in Q2 FY2026, up 26% year over year; Fortinet | $3.41 billion in Q4 FY2026, up 34% year over year; Palo Alto Networks |
| Additional growth indicators | Product revenue was $773 million, up 52%; billings were $2.37 billion, up 33% in Q2 FY2026; Fortinet | NGS ARR was $9.10 billion, up 63%; remaining performance obligations were $21.2 billion, up 34% in Q4 FY2026; Palo Alto Networks |
| Profitability and cash flow | Q2 GAAP operating margin was 34%, versus 38% non-GAAP; free cash flow was $966 million. Fortinet | FY2026 adjusted free cash flow was $4.414 billion, a 38.4% adjusted margin. FY2026 GAAP operating income was $695 million, versus $3.356 billion non-GAAP. Palo Alto Networks |
These metrics answer different questions. Fortinet’s product revenue and billings point to product demand and invoicing activity; Palo Alto’s NGS ARR and remaining performance obligations reflect recurring-revenue and contracted-work measures. Their growth rates should not be ranked as if the measures had the same definition.
Profitability: read GAAP results beside adjusted figures
Fortinet’s margins and guidance
Fortinet reported Q2 FY2026 GAAP operating income margin of 34%, non-GAAP operating margin of 38%, GAAP EPS of $0.82 and non-GAAP EPS of $0.90. For FY2026, its July 2026 guidance called for revenue of $8.020–$8.180 billion, billings of $9.350–$9.550 billion, non-GAAP operating margin of 35%–37% and non-GAAP diluted EPS of $3.41–$3.47. Those are forecasts, not completed results.
Fortinet says its non-GAAP guidance excludes stock-based compensation, acquired-intangible amortization, intellectual-property-related gains and tax adjustments. It did not reconcile those forward non-GAAP measures to GAAP, citing items it could not reasonably predict. Its FY2025 filing provides a historical GAAP reference point: revenue of $6.80 billion, operating income of $2.08 billion and operating margin of 30.7%. Fortinet FY2025 filing
Palo Alto Networks’ adjustments are material to the comparison
Palo Alto Networks reported FY2026 GAAP operating income of $695 million and GAAP net income of $307 million, compared with FY2025 GAAP operating income of $1.243 billion and net income of $1.134 billion. In Q4 FY2026, GAAP operating income was $172 million versus $1.0 billion non-GAAP operating income, and the company recorded a $282 million GAAP net loss.
Rank #3
The gap between its FY2026 GAAP and non-GAAP operating income is substantial. The company’s reconciliation added back $1.712 billion in share-based compensation-related charges, $295 million in acquisition-related costs and $638 million in acquired-intangible amortization, among other items. Its FY2027 guidance, issued September 1, 2026, projected a 29.5% non-GAAP operating margin and a 38.0% adjusted free cash flow margin. The guidance excludes share-based compensation, acquisition costs, acquired-intangible amortization, litigation and other adjustments; management did not reconcile the forward measures to GAAP. Adjusted figures can help illustrate operating trends, but the adjustments matter when judging earnings quality and shareholder costs. Palo Alto Networks cautions that its non-GAAP measures exclude recurring items such as stock-based compensation and may not be directly comparable with similarly named measures from other companies. Compare GAAP results, cash generation and dilution alongside adjusted margins rather than treating the adjusted figure as the whole story.

The two companies also frame forward earnings differently: Fortinet’s FY2026 EPS outlook is non-GAAP, while Palo Alto Networks’ forward guidance excludes a broader set of items. A single multiple is not a return forecast or a complete measure of value. Recheck the price and estimates when making a decision, and compare valuation with growth, GAAP profitability, cash flow, dilution and execution.

Quick Recap
- Consider the Fortinet thesis if you are looking for exposure to secure networking and want to assess its recent product and billings momentum alongside reported GAAP margins and cash generation. Evaluate whether its investment spending, supply-related risks and valuation fit your expectations.
- Consider the Palo Alto Networks thesis if you are focused on its broader platform portfolio and recent NGS ARR growth. Weigh that growth against its higher forward multiple in the cited snapshot and the substantial gap between GAAP and adjusted operating results.
- Compare both against your portfolio if you already hold cybersecurity, enterprise software or technology stocks. Two different companies can still add overlapping sector exposure, and neither company’s results establish that its shares suit your objectives or ability to absorb losses.
A practical checklist before deciding
- Set your investment horizon and risk limit. Decide what time period you are investing over and how much volatility or loss you can tolerate before comparing companies.
- Choose comparable measures carefully. Put revenue beside revenue, but do not treat Fortinet’s billings as equivalent to Palo Alto’s NGS ARR or remaining performance obligations.
- Check GAAP results and cash generation. Review operating income, net income and cash flow alongside each company’s adjusted measures; identify significant exclusions such as stock-based compensation and acquisition-related costs.
- Refresh valuation data. Verify current share prices and estimate-based valuation metrics rather than relying on an October 2, 2026 snapshot.
- Assess concentration and execution risk. Consider your existing technology exposure and whether the risks each company discloses are acceptable for your portfolio.
