It does not establish Cisco Secure Firewall’s corresponding features, so it cannot support a complete three-vendor verdict. Nor does vendor documentation alone show which product is more secure, faster, easier to manage, or less expensive.
What can—and cannot—be compared
Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks document different parts of their firewall approaches in the materials available for this comparison. Fortinet describes FortiOS capabilities, supported platform types, and its Security Fabric. Palo Alto Networks documents policy-matching fields and management choices spanning individual firewalls, Panorama, and Strata Cloud Manager.

The available Cisco Secure Firewall material does not establish comparable details about Cisco’s security controls, policy model, management products, or licensing. Cisco therefore appears below as an unresolved comparison point, not as a product that can be ranked from the documented facts here. All feature descriptions are vendor documentation, not independent tests of security effectiveness or operational ease.

FortiGate: FortiOS across appliance, virtual, and cloud platforms
Fortinet identifies FortiOS as the operating system for FortiGate next-generation firewalls and says it supports physical appliances, hypervisors, and cloud computing platforms. Its getting-started guide describes security functions including IPS, advanced malware protection, web security, inline malware prevention, and data loss prevention. It also positions FortiOS as central to Fortinet SD-WAN and ZTNA offerings. These are descriptions of the vendor’s platform and functions, not proof of comparative protection or performance.

What Security Fabric adds to the documented picture
Fortinet describes Security Fabric as an architecture connecting security solutions across hardware, virtual, and cloud environments. Its Fortinet Security Fabric | FortiGate / FortiOS 7.6.5 administration documentation lists topology views, security-rating checks, fabric connectors, and event-triggered automation. Those features suggest areas to examine when assessing visibility and coordination across a Fortinet environment; they do not establish that the Fabric integrates more broadly or works better than another vendor’s ecosystem.
Palo Alto Networks: policy matching and management options
Policy rules
Palo Alto Networks’ Security Policy documentation says firewall rules can evaluate source and destination zones, addresses, applications, users, and services. It also notes that some security features require subscriptions—including Advanced WildFire, Advanced URL Filtering, Advanced Threat Prevention, or DNS Security—with requirements varying by feature and product configuration. Buyers should map the features they intend to use to the exact products and subscriptions in their proposed deployment rather than assume every capability is included.

Local and centralized administration
The Firewall Administration guide describes a web interface, CLI, XML API, and Panorama as management methods. It says Panorama provides web-based management, reporting, and log collection for multiple firewalls. The About Panorama overview further describes centralized configuration and deployment using templates and device groups, aggregated logging and reporting, and distributed administration.

Palo Alto Networks’ Determine Your Management Strategy guide describes three choices: manage individual firewalls through PAN-OS, manage a group through Panorama, or use cloud management through Strata Cloud Manager. The guide describes shared policy and cross-environment visibility for the cloud option. Availability and requirements depend on the product and release, so validate them against the specific deployment under consideration.

Why this does not support a Cisco comparison or security ranking
The available official Cisco Secure Firewall material does not substantiate a product model, management product, licensing requirement, policy architecture, or security advantage for comparison. A responsible buyer should verify those details in current Cisco documentation before treating Cisco as equivalent to either of the documented approaches above.
More broadly, feature descriptions do not answer whether one firewall blocks more threats, is simpler to operate, or costs less over its lifecycle. The available material includes no common benchmark, comparable throughput results, independent efficacy test, or cross-vendor price evidence. A defensible ranking would require evidence gathered under comparable conditions, not just vendor descriptions.

How to evaluate the options for your environment
Use a requirements-led evaluation rather than choosing on feature lists alone. Compare the same traffic, deployment pattern, and administrative workflow across products, including Cisco once its current documentation and proposal are available.
- Set the deployment scope. Record whether you need physical appliances, virtual firewalls, cloud deployments, or a mix. Fortinet’s guide explicitly lists those platform categories for FortiOS; confirm the exact supported products and releases for each candidate.
- Map management scale and workflow. Decide whether administrators will manage devices individually or need centralized or cloud management. For Palo Alto Networks, assess PAN-OS, Panorama, and Strata Cloud Manager against the number of firewalls, shared configuration needs, log aggregation, reporting, and delegated roles.
- Test representative policy operations. Use real policy examples to assess which traffic attributes matter to your organization and how rules are created, reviewed, and maintained. Palo Alto Networks documents matching on zones, addresses, applications, users, and services; establish equivalent details directly from current Fortinet and Cisco documentation and product demonstrations.
- Inventory integrations. List existing network, cloud, endpoint, identity, and operations tools that must interoperate. Fortinet documents Security Fabric connectors and visibility functions, but the cited description does not establish a comparative integration advantage. Verify required connectors and workflows with each vendor.
- Normalize subscriptions and lifecycle terms. For each quote, identify which inspection and security features are included, which require subscriptions, and how support and renewals are priced. Palo Alto Networks documents subscription requirements for some features; the available material does not provide comparable bundle or price details for the vendors.
- Measure performance under the intended workload. Compare the exact models with the inspection features enabled, representative traffic mix, and intended network topology. No comparable independent throughput evidence is available here, so request evidence or run a controlled proof of concept instead of relying on an unmatched headline figure.
Document the test conditions and acceptance criteria before the evaluation. That makes differences in policy handling, management workload, integration, and performance more meaningful than an unqualified feature checklist.
