Formlabs’ specifications are clear, but independent long-term reliability, noise, print-success and total-cost testing are not yet established.
What the Form Studio 1 is
Form Studio 1 is a desktop masked stereolithography (MSLA) resin printer from Formlabs. MSLA exposes an entire layer through a masked light source rather than tracing each layer point by point. In practical terms, that makes it suited to detailed small parts, figurines, models, concept work and selected prototypes, provided you are prepared for resin handling and post-processing.

Formlabs lists a build volume of 20.0 × 12.5 × 23.5 cm (7.9 × 4.9 × 9.3 inches), equal to 5.9 liters. That is a useful capacity for a desktop machine, especially for batches of smaller parts or taller single models. Open Material Mode and resin compatibility
Open Material Mode is included, which is the printer’s most important differentiator for buyers who do not want to be limited to a closed resin catalog. Formlabs says the machine supports nine of its own materials as well as third-party materials. That gives you more freedom to select a resin for appearance, toughness, flexibility or another requirement, but compatibility does not remove the need to validate exposure settings and post-processing for each resin.
Third-party resin also changes the safety and emissions picture. Formlabs’ low-emissions statement is tied to a specific combination, not to every possible material or room setup. Treat an unfamiliar resin as a separate chemical-handling decision and follow its safety data and curing requirements.

What comes with the Complete package
The Complete Founders Edition includes the core printer hardware and the equipment needed to wash and cure printed parts:
- Form Studio 1 printer
- Resin tank

Those contents are listed on Formlabs’ Complete Founders Edition page. The package is more convenient than buying a printer alone, because resin prints must be cleaned and post-cured before many parts reach their intended properties. It still does not represent a complete lifetime operating budget: resin, tank wear, cleaning supplies and safety equipment remain recurring or situational expenses.

How the ownership workflow works
- Prepare the printer and material. Install the resin tank and build platform, then confirm that the selected resin and its exposure profile are appropriate for the job.
- Print the part. MSLA creates the model layer by layer inside the resin vat.
- Remove the print. Detach the cured part from the build platform using the appropriate release procedure.
- Wash it. Cleaning removes uncured resin from the surface and from detailed features.
- Cure it. Post-curing stabilizes the material’s final properties according to the resin’s requirements.
- Inspect and maintain. Check the part and the printer, clean the tank when needed, and investigate failures before starting another job.
Formlabs’ support index covers receiving and unboxing, setup, resin-tank inspection and cleaning, print-failure diagnosis, release-texture cleaning and UPS selection. These topics indicate that tank cleanliness, troubleshooting and power continuity are normal ownership tasks, not edge cases. The support library is available at Form Studio 1 Product Support.
Safety and emissions: what the certification does—and does not—mean
Formlabs states: “Paired with Alpha Resins and the Formlabs VOC Extractor, Form Studio 1 is the first and only resin printer with UL GREENGUARD Certification for low chemical emissions.” That is a manufacturer statement published on its Form Studio 1 Founders Edition page.

The qualification matters: the claim depends on the named Alpha Resins and VOC Extractor pairing. It should not be generalized to every third-party resin, an unventilated room or a setup without the extractor. Resin printing still calls for a controlled workspace, appropriate protective equipment, careful handling of uncured material and disposal practices that follow the resin’s instructions.
Where it fits best—and where expectations should be lower
Formlabs’ own use-case table rates the Form Studio 1 “Best” for figurines/models and concept modeling, “Good” for functional prototyping, and “Fair” for rapid tooling/jigs and end-use parts. These are manufacturer ratings, not independent performance tests.

How much does Form Studio 1 cost to run?
The documented entry price is $699, but that figure does not answer the ownership question by itself. Your recurring budget should account for:
- Resin: each print consumes material, including supports and failed parts.
- Resin-tank wear: tanks are consumable components and may need replacement as they age or become damaged.
- Washing and curing: these steps require equipment, cleaning media and electricity; the Complete package includes Form Studio Wash+Cure.
- Safety controls: gloves, protective handling supplies, ventilation or extraction and suitable storage may be necessary for your workspace.
- Downtime and failures: a contaminated tank, poor support strategy or interrupted power can waste resin and a build.
No independently measured total cost of ownership, resin price schedule, tank life, noise level or verified print-success rate was established for this review. Calculate a job-specific estimate from your resin usage, expected failure rate and replacement schedule rather than multiplying the $699 purchase price by a presumed payback period.
What has not been independently proven
Available documentation establishes the specifications, package contents, material-opening feature and manufacturer’s emissions claim. It does not establish long-term reliability, a laboratory speed benchmark, a measured acoustic profile or an independently verified success rate. Choose the Form Studio 1 if its combination of 5.9-liter capacity and included Open Material Mode solves a real workflow constraint, and if you can support resin handling, washing, curing and maintenance. The Complete package is the more usable starting point because it adds Form Studio Wash+Cure, while the $699 listing should be treated as an entry price rather than the finished cost of ownership. Buyers seeking proven long-term reliability or independently measured operating economics should wait for extended testing or validate those points directly before committing.
