What was his scientific work?
His research addressed the mechanical behaviour of materials, alloy development and X-ray diffraction from structural imperfections. These areas connect the properties and structure of materials with how they perform, and helped establish the scientific foundation for his later leadership roles in research institutions and government departments, as described in the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board commemorative biography.
