He sees surface-water gameplay as a natural candidate for a major new feature, but these are his personal ideas—not confirmed plans from Bethesda.
What Nesmith thinks boats could add
In an interview with GoHumanize, Nesmith framed boats as more than a way to travel. If the game used a setting such as Iliac Bay, he said, the water could support sea exploration and other boat-based activities. He also floated the possibility of water-related skill trees, spells and creatures. These are conditional examples of what the setting might make possible, not announced features. VGC reported his comments on October 2, 2026; FRVR also covered the interview.

Nesmith described boats and surface gameplay as a potential “dragon-level feature”—a major addition capable of shaping how the game is played. His point is that a boat could become a platform for exploration and distinct mechanics, rather than merely shortening a journey.
Why he would focus on the surface, not underwater
Nesmith argued that developing underwater content would add substantial scope. Recalling an underwater concept prototyped for Fallout 4 but not pursued broadly, he recommended concentrating effort on surface-water play instead. As he put it: “When it comes to Elder Scrolls VI, if it were me, I would probably kibosh anything underwater and keep everybody focused on the surface in that same spirit, not because it wouldn’t be cool, but because I’d rather do this part really well rather than do both of these parts not so well.”
#1 Best Overall
That is a design trade-off he recommends, not a description of Bethesda’s current plans. A focused surface system might allow more depth in sailing and related activities; adding underwater environments would mean building another category of gameplay. Nesmith’s preference is to do one well rather than divide development effort across both.
What is confirmed—and what remains speculation
The reporting establishes that Nesmith expressed a hope for boats and potentially naval combat. It does not establish that Bethesda intends to include any of these features. Nor does it confirm Iliac Bay, Sentinel City or another setting. Boats, naval combat, sea creatures, spells, water-focused skill trees and underwater areas all remain possibilities raised in interview coverage, not verified game features.
Rank #2
- EXPAND TO 8 PLAYERS: This expansion increases the player count from the base game, allowing 5–8 players to explore Skyrim together in epic, large-scale tabletop adventures.
- MORE HEROES, MORE CHAOS: Supports bigger parties and bolder strategies, perfect for groups who want deeper cooperation, rivalry, and emergent storytelling across the province of Skyrim.
- SEAMLESS CAMPAIGN INTEGRATION: Designed to plug directly into The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – Adventure Board Game, preserving narrative depth, progression, and immersive gameplay.
- PERFECT FOR GAME NIGHTS & EVENTS: Ideal for larger gaming groups, clubs, and marathon sessions where more players means more interaction, alliances, and unforgettable moments.
- EXPANSION ONLY: Requires The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – Adventure Board Game base game to play; enhances existing campaigns without replacing core systems.
Nesmith is not working on The Elder Scrolls VI. FRVR reports that he left Bethesda before the game began development and does not know its exact details. The comments should therefore be read as a former designer’s informed perspective, not inside information about the project. PlayStation Universe reported on October 2, 2026 that the game had no release date at that time; that status may change.

Why boats are a plausible idea, not a prediction
Nesmith’s suggestion connects a possible coastal setting with a feature that could give players more to do on the water. But a plausible design opportunity does not show that a particular feature is being developed. The available coverage attributes these ideas to Nesmith’s GoHumanize interview, not to an announcement by Bethesda.
