Former NYPD sergeant Atickul Islam pleaded guilty in federal court on September 30, 2026, to falsely impersonating a U.S. government officer. Prosecutors said he threatened a Queens woman and her family with ICE action, then sent a second message claiming to be the director of ICE’s New York Field Office. He has not yet been sentenced; sentencing was scheduled for March 24, 2027.
What did Islam send the woman?
According to the New York Daily News account of the case, Islam used his personal phone to send a threat on March 29, 2025. The message included: “ICE will come get you and your family and you will always live poor. Matter of fact I will make the phone call myself,” followed by a threat referring to his knowledge of where the family lived. About four hours later, he allegedly sent a message from a different number claiming to be “James W. Anderson,” the ICE New York Field Office director. The message told the woman and her family to report to an ICE location or face further legal action and enforcement measures. QNS reported that the second message presented itself as an official notice. New York Daily News; QNS
What was the motive, according to reports?
The New York Daily News, citing law-enforcement sources, reported that the woman had rejected Islam’s romantic advances. U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella characterized the conduct as using lies and the threat of deportation to take revenge on a woman in his personal life. The reports do not identify the woman. QNS says the messages were sent between March 22 and March 29, 2025.
During his plea, Islam said, “I sent a text message impersonating a federal field office director of ICE, via a cell phone,” according to the Daily News. Nocella said Islam had used “lies and the threat of deportation” for a personal vendetta, adding that his office would not tolerate an officer using federal law enforcement in that way. FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Barnacle, quoted by QNS, said Islam’s guilty plea showed that impersonating a federal officer is a serious crime that erodes public trust. The case concerns alleged misuse of the threat of immigration enforcement in a personal dispute; the plea resolves the false-personation charge, while the court still must determine the sentence.
