Here are 10 notable voices working in those roles for the 2025–26 season, ranked by current visibility, range of work, broadcast tenure and playing résumé. The order is editorial judgment—not an official league or network ranking—and does not claim to measure who is the most skilled or popular commentator.
How this list is ranked
A game analyst works during a live broadcast, often explaining tactics and what is unfolding on court. A color commentator adds analysis alongside a play-by-play announcer; studio analysts discuss games and league news in a set program. Networks may use one person in more than one format, but those assignments are not interchangeable. This ranking weighs the prominence of a commentator’s current 2025–26 role, documented work across formats, continuity in broadcasting and NBA playing résumé. It does not score charisma, audience approval or analytical quality.

10 former NBA players who became commentators
1. Richard Jefferson
Jefferson ranks first for the prominence of his ESPN work. The network identifies him as an analyst and game analyst, and its 2025–26 coverage announcement places him on its lead team for major games. He joined ESPN in 2019 after a 17-season NBA career. ESPN also reported that he received his first NBA Finals analyst assignment in 2025. ESPN’s biography and 2025–26 assignment announcement establish his role and playing history.

2. Grant Hill
Hill brings an 18-season NBA résumé and experience in more than one broadcast setting. NBC Sports lists him as an NBA game analyst beginning in June 2025; his broadcasting work has also included TNT Sports and CBS college basketball. That mix of national NBA and college coverage makes him one of the more experienced names in the current group. NBC Sports’ biography describes his career and analyst work.

3. Jamal Crawford
Crawford joined NBC Sports as a game analyst in January 2025 for the network’s 2025–26 NBA coverage, with the announcement saying he would work one or more games weekly. Before NBC, he worked as a studio and game analyst for TNT and NBA TV. That experience across live games and studio programs gives him a broader documented broadcast background than a single-format assignment. Crawford played 20 NBA seasons, from 2000 to 2020. NBC Sports’ biography covers his playing and broadcast careers.
4. Reggie Miller
Miller’s place on the list rests on a prominent new national assignment: NBCUniversal announced him as a game analyst for its 2025–26 NBA coverage. The announcement establishes the role, though it does not by itself establish how often he will appear across the full season. NBCUniversal’s commentator announcement names him and distinguishes game analysts from studio contributors.

The NBA’s announcement of Prime Video’s 2025–26 coverage gives his biography and role.

6. Dell Curry
Curry combines national streaming work with a long-running regional role. Prime Video named him as an analyst for 2025–26, and the same official announcement says he had served as a Charlotte Hornets color commentator since 2009. He played 16 years in the NBA. The combination of regional continuity and a national assignment gives him a distinctive place among former players on this list. The NBA’s Prime Video coverage announcement documents those details.

7. Steve Nash
Prime Video named Hall of Fame player Nash among the former players in its 2025–26 NBA coverage. The announcement supports his inclusion in the coverage team, but does not specify a particular format or regular game schedule. That makes his current role less precisely defined in the cited material than the game-analyst assignments above. The NBA’s announcement identifies him as part of the team.
8. Dwyane Wade
Wade is also named among the Hall of Fame players in Prime Video’s 2025–26 coverage announcement. The source confirms his participation but does not spell out whether his appearances are primarily in studio, during games or in another format. His inclusion reflects the visibility of the assignment, while the ranking accounts for the less detailed role description. The NBA’s Prime Video announcement names him.

9. Brian Scalabrine
Scalabrine has a defined and sustained regional role: NBCUniversal describes him as NBC Sports Boston’s primary Celtics game analyst since the 2020–21 NBA season. He played 11 NBA seasons. His spot here reflects continuity and clear game-analysis duties, even though the cited source describes a regional rather than a national assignment. NBCUniversal’s NBA commentator announcement provides those details.
10. Danny Green
Green’s broadcast work includes analyst and color-commentator roles for ESPN and Turner Sports, according to an NBA.com interview published January 22, 2026. He won three NBA championships during a 15-year NBA career. Green described his own approach this way: “I always have the players back, and I give the fans an inside perspective on what it’s like to be a player in the locker room and on the court.” That is his stated aim, not an independently measured assessment of his commentary. NBA.com’s interview reports his experience and comments.

Where former-player commentators appear in 2025–26
The national roster spans several networks and formats. ESPN/ABC has Jefferson on its lead team for major games; NBC Sports and Peacock’s announced coverage includes game analysts such as Hill, Crawford and Miller, along with studio analysts; Prime Video’s roster includes Barry, Curry, Nash and Wade. Regional broadcasts remain important, as Scalabrine’s Celtics role and Curry’s Hornets work illustrate. Assignments can change by season, and an announcement naming someone to coverage does not establish how often they will appear.
Studio appointments should not be mistaken for live game commentary. NBCUniversal announced Carmelo Anthony and Vince Carter as studio analysts, for example; that makes them relevant to a broader list of former-player television analysts, but not evidence of a game-commentary assignment. Similarly, a roster announcement that names a person without describing a format should not be read as proof of a specific game role.
Quick Recap
What to look for when comparing former-player analysts
- Format: Check whether the assignment is game analyst, color commentator or studio analyst; each calls for different work.
- Regularity: A network roster confirms an assignment, but not necessarily a fixed number of appearances.
- Experience: Broadcast tenure and work across live games and studio coverage are useful context, not automatic measures of quality.
- Perspective: Former players can draw on firsthand experience, but a playing résumé alone does not establish how effective someone is on television.
