What was K. Sivan reported to have said?
An Economic Times search-result summary associates the headline with K. Sivan, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, and describes his point as improved climate and atmospheric modelling helping people predict and prepare for a possible “Super El Niño.” The article itself was not accessible, so his exact words and context could not be verified. The available account does not establish that he predicted El Niño would physically weaken.

That distinction matters: better forecasting can help governments and communities prepare for climate risks, but it is not a forecast that an El Niño event will lose strength.

In a 5 August 2026 release, the Ministry of Earth Sciences reported that the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) assessed El Niño conditions as having developed in May 2026. The assessment put the probability of their persisting from June 2026 through February 2027 at 70% to 90%. This is a forecast probability for that period, not a guarantee.

A separate Ministry of Earth Sciences parliamentary reply published on 30 July 2026 said conditions had strengthened from weak in June to moderate in July and could reach the very strong category in October–December 2026. It also cautioned that the event’s precise intensity and its effects on India depend on coupled ocean–atmosphere conditions.
What does El Niño mean for the Indian monsoon?
El Niño can influence monsoon rainfall, but it does not determine the result by itself. The Ministry of Earth Sciences identifies the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), regional ocean–atmosphere interactions and prevailing winds as other factors affecting the monsoon. As the ministry put it in its 5 August release, “The Indian monsoon is influenced by several interacting climate drivers, including the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and regional ocean-atmosphere interactions.”

Consequently, the forecast strength of an El Niño event should not be read as a direct prediction of rainfall for every part of India. Regional conditions and updated forecasts matter.
Is “Super El Niño” an official category?
No. In its 30 July 2026 parliamentary reply, the Ministry of Earth Sciences said: “There is no officially defined category known as a ‘Super El Nino’ by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) or the India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the Ministry.” The reply describes the categories used as weak, moderate, strong and very strong, based on sea-surface temperature anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific.

So “Super El Niño” may appear in headlines or informal discussion, but it is not an official WMO or IMD classification in the cited government statement.

For current conditions and local implications, use updated official forecasts rather than treating a headline or an older forecast as current guidance. The Ministry of Earth Sciences says IMD issues forecasts and advisories, including daily impact-based forecasts and risk-based warnings valid for seven days. INCOIS provides coastal ocean-state forecasts and warnings; its Ocean State Forecast services cover waves, winds, swells, currents and sea-surface temperature up to ten days in advance, according to the ministry’s 5 August 2026 release.
