Former BioWare lead Mark Darrah has linked some of the development problems behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard to EA’s expectation that BioWare release a game every year. The account, reported by GamesRadar+, also points to missing senior leadership and repeated deadline changes; it does not establish annualization as the sole cause of the game’s commercial performance.

According to GamesRadar+, Darrah said that while he was assigned to Anthem from 2017 to 2019, The Veilguard ran without BioWare’s most senior leadership. The outlet printed his explanation: “The project ran without its most senior leadership when I was on Anthem, from 2017 until 2019.”

GamesRadar+ also describes repeated release-date changes in small increments. In its account, those shifts kept the team close to what it understood to be the release date, leaving little room to reconsider the project. Darrah’s explanation therefore concerns both the studio’s release cadence and the conditions under which the game was developed.
How the reported yearly schedule was supposed to work
GamesRadar+ says EA wanted BioWare to publish something every year, a difficult rhythm for large role-playing games. The outlet describes a proposed sequence beginning in 2013: Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age 4. Delays disrupted that sequence and cascaded through the slate; the game ultimately released as Dragon Age: The Veilguard in late 2024.
