Several vendors advertise PST password utilities, but those claims are not comparative proof that a tool will work on your file. First confirm that Outlook is asking for a PST password—not an email-account password or an OST file password—then protect the original file before considering a third-party utility.
First confirm what password Outlook is asking for
A password prompt does not automatically mean your PST file is locked. Microsoft distinguishes a password-protected .pst data file from an email-account sign-in, and says an Offline Outlook Data File (.ost) cannot use this PST-style password. Check the file extension and when the prompt appears before buying software. See Microsoft’s guidance on changing a password for an Outlook Data File.

- PST data-file password: Outlook is asking to open a specific .pst file.
- Email-account password: The prompt concerns signing in to an account or connecting to a mailbox, not unlocking a PST.
- OST file: Microsoft says this type of file does not support the PST password mechanism.
If you are sure it is a PST password prompt, check that Caps Lock is off and enter the password with the correct capitalization. Microsoft notes that PST password entry is case-sensitive and that Caps Lock is a common reason a valid password appears not to work. Its support page states: “If you forget your password, Microsoft can’t recover it.”

Microsoft’s options—and what they do not do
Microsoft’s instructions for Outlook 365 and Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016 say there is no way to retrieve a forgotten PST password; changing an existing password requires knowing the current one. Microsoft describes a PST password as a way to help prevent unintentional access by other people sharing a computer, not as protection against intentional malicious access. Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool, SCANPST.EXE, is a separate option when an Outlook data file is damaged. It repairs data-file problems; Microsoft does not describe it as a forgotten-password recovery tool. Use the Microsoft instructions for repairing Outlook data files only when corruption is the issue.
Five vendor-described PST password tools
These products are named in vendor pages or Microsoft Marketplace listings as PST password utilities. The descriptions below report what those sources claim, not independently confirmed performance. The available evidence does not establish ten distinct, current tools, a defensible ranking, or comparative success rates, so a ten-item list would imply more certainty than the facts support.

The descriptions do not establish that these tools all recover the original password: a product may instead generate an alternate usable password, remove protection, or reset access. Confirm exactly what the current version does, which Outlook and operating-system versions it supports, and what the trial allows you to do before paying.

How to evaluate a utility without risking the only copy
- Keep the original untouched. Make a separate backup copy of the PST and work on a duplicate. Do not treat a vendor’s data-integrity claim as a guarantee.
- Verify the publisher and download source. Obtain the installer from a source you can verify, and check that the product name and publisher match the vendor or marketplace listing.
- Check how it handles your file. Determine whether processing is local or involves uploading the PST or sending it to a vendor. The product descriptions cited here do not establish data-handling practices for every tool.
- Read the trial limits. A demo may show a scan or identify a file without actually restoring access or saving usable output. Check what it lets you verify before purchasing.
- Match the tool to the job and your setup. Look for explicit support for your Outlook, Windows or Mac version and PST format, and find out whether it returns the original password, generates another usable password, or removes or resets protection.
A June 2026 Microsoft Learn Q&A thread includes an individual report that MailsDaddy removed a password from an old PST so the user could import calendar data. That is one user’s account, not a controlled test or assurance that the utility will work on another file. No independent success-rate or comparative performance figures are established for the products listed here.

If the file is damaged rather than password-locked
A PST that will not open because it is corrupt presents a different problem from a forgotten password. Microsoft’s SCANPST.EXE guidance covers repairing Outlook data files, including PST and OST files; it does not promise to bypass a forgotten PST password. Diagnose the error before choosing a repair path, and retain the untouched copy before attempting repair.
