If you cannot open a Samsung Galaxy A20, first determine which kind of lock you are facing. A forgotten PIN, pattern, or password is a screen-lock problem; a phone that rejects another carrier’s SIM has a network lock. The remedies are different. For a screen lock, try a normal restart, then check whether a configured Samsung remote-unlock feature is available while your fingerprint or face still works. If no recovery method was set up, Samsung says a factory reset may be necessary. A reset restores access but removes local data that was not backed up.
A carrier lock cannot be removed with a screen reset. You must use the original carrier’s rules for the country and account attached to the handset. Samsung’s general support pages do not establish one universal carrier-unlock procedure.

Identify the lock before choosing a fix
Look at the exact message and the circumstances. If the A20 asks for a PIN, pattern, or password at the lock screen, use the screen-lock path below. If it accepts the phone’s original SIM but refuses a SIM from another network, it is a carrier or SIM-network lock. If the phone is frozen, restarting it is different from bypassing a forgotten credential.

| What you see | Likely problem | Correct starting point |
|---|---|---|
| The phone asks for a forgotten PIN, pattern, or password | Screen lock | Try a restart, then biometric access and Samsung’s remote option if it was configured |
| Your fingerprint or face still opens the phone, but you cannot change the lock type | Screen-lock recovery with biometric access | Use Samsung Find My Mobile if the service and account are available |
| A different carrier’s SIM shows a network-unlock message | Carrier/SIM lock | Contact the original carrier in the country where the phone was sold |
| The display is unresponsive or the phone repeatedly crashes | Software or hardware fault | Attempt a soft restart before considering a reset |
Check your exact Galaxy A20 variant
Galaxy A20 models are not identical worldwide. Samsung’s Caribbean support page identifies an SM-A205G/DS model and links an Android 9 manual for that regional variant. Your model number and software version may differ, so do not assume that a button sequence or menu shown for another A20 applies to yours.

If you can open the phone with a fingerprint or face, go to Settings > About phone and record the model number and Android version. If you cannot unlock it, check the original box, purchase record, or the label on the handset or SIM tray. Keep that information available when asking Samsung or a carrier for help.
Protect data before attempting a reset
Samsung Electronics Service Korea’s forgotten-screen-lock guidance, dated 1 January 2025, warns that a full reset erases data that was not backed up and that deleted data cannot be recovered. Treat this as the decisive trade-off: regaining use may require sacrificing files stored only on the phone.
- Use a working fingerprint or face unlock immediately, if available, to copy photos, documents, contacts, and authenticator information.
- Check whether Samsung Cloud, Google backup, photo backup, or a computer copy already contains the material you need.
- Make sure you know the Samsung and Google account credentials associated with the A20. Setup may ask for account verification after a reset.
- Remove a microSD card before resetting if it contains files you want to preserve. A reset normally targets internal storage, but keeping the card out prevents accidental formatting choices.
Do not pay a third-party service that promises to preserve a forgotten credential unless you can verify its authorization and data-handling practices. The official Samsung material reviewed here does not establish any third-party bypass tool or paid unlock service as an approved solution.

1. Perform a normal restart
Samsung’s current UK support guidance, updated 28 September 2026, lists a soft restart as a troubleshooting step when the problem may be temporary. Use the on-screen Power or Restart control if the phone responds. If the screen is stuck, use the physical restart combination specified for your model in its Samsung manual; button names and timing can vary by variant.

A restart can clear a temporary freeze, but it does not erase or remove a forgotten PIN, pattern, or password. If the same credential prompt returns, move to the recovery options rather than repeatedly guessing.
2. Test a registered biometric method
Try the fingerprint sensor or face recognition that you previously enrolled. Android may require the backup PIN or password after a reboot, after a security timeout, or after several failed biometric attempts. In those cases, biometrics will not replace the credential, and guessing indefinitely can increase lockout delays.
If biometrics still work, check Samsung Find My Mobile
Samsung describes Find My Mobile as a possible way to reset the unlock method in the narrower situation where you can still access the phone biometrically but have forgotten the PIN, pattern, or password and cannot change the screen-lock type. Availability depends on the device, Samsung account, network connection, and features that were enabled before you were locked out.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On another phone or computer, open Samsung’s Find My Mobile service and sign in with the same Samsung account used on the A20.
- Select the Galaxy A20 from the device list. If it is missing, confirm that you used the correct account and that the phone had previously been registered.
- Choose the available control for unlocking or resetting the screen lock. Samsung may use different labels as the service changes; follow the warning shown for your account and model.
- Approve the operation and wait for the A20 to receive it over the internet. Keep the phone powered on and connected to a mobile network or Wi-Fi.
- Afterward, create a new screen-lock method in the phone’s security settings and record it in a secure password manager.
This operation removes the existing unlock information; it does not reveal the old PIN, pattern, or password. If the service reports that the device or account is unsupported, do not assume that repeating the request will bypass the lock. Proceed to the reset decision below.

Factory-reset fallback when no remote method was configured
Samsung’s UK guidance says a factory reset may be necessary when you are locked out and did not set up a remote unlock method. A reset returns the phone to its setup state, so use it only after checking backups and account credentials.
When you can still reach Settings
If biometric access lets you enter Android, use the software reset path rather than a hardware-key procedure:
- Open Settings.
- Choose General management.
- Tap Reset, then Factory data reset.
- Review the account and data list on screen, scroll to Reset or Delete all, and authenticate when prompted.
- Leave the phone connected to power while it restarts and completes the erase.
Menu wording can differ by Android release. If your A20 shows different labels, use the closest Samsung-defined reset entry and read every confirmation screen.
When the phone will not accept any credential
Use the recovery menu documented for your exact model and software version. The general process is to power the phone off, enter Android Recovery with the model-specific hardware-key combination, select Wipe data/factory reset, confirm the choice, and then select Reboot system now. A20 variants can require different timing, and some recovery environments require a USB connection before the key combination works, so follow the SM-A205G/DS Android 9 manual or the manual for your recorded model instead of treating one internet sequence as universal.

In Recovery, the volume keys normally move the highlight and the Power key selects it, but confirm the labels on your screen. Do not choose a firmware-flashing, bootloader-unlock, or formatting option merely because it appears nearby; those actions are unrelated to ordinary screen-lock recovery and can create additional problems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do after the reset
Allow the first boot to finish; it can take longer than a normal restart. Select the language and region, connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, and sign in with the account previously associated with the phone if setup requests verification. Restore only the backups you trust, install system updates offered for your exact model, and create a new PIN or password that you can retrieve securely. Re-enroll fingerprints or face recognition after the primary credential is set, because biometrics are an additional unlock method, not a replacement for the backup credential.
A network-locked Galaxy A20 needs the original carrier
A factory reset does not remove a carrier or SIM-network restriction. Eligibility can depend on the country, the original carrier, whether the handset was paid off, account status, and how the phone was supplied. The Samsung sources available for this model do not state those criteria or provide a universal code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Identify the carrier that first sold or activated the A20 and the country of sale.
- Record the exact model variant, such as SM-A205G/DS, and the device IMEI from the box, SIM tray, or Settings > About phone when accessible. Do not publish the IMEI publicly.
- Ask that carrier whether the phone is eligible for network unlocking and which request channel it requires.
- Follow the carrier’s instructions exactly, then insert the new SIM and test calls, messaging, and mobile data.
If you do not know the original carrier, a local repair shop may be able to identify the network history, but it cannot change the carrier’s eligibility rules. Avoid websites that promise a universal Samsung code without asking for the country, carrier, and IMEI.
Common failure points and the safest response
| Symptom | Likely reason | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Find My Mobile shows no A20 | Wrong Samsung account, the phone was never registered, or the service is unavailable for that device | Verify the account and connection; if the device remains absent, use the backup-and-reset path |
| Fingerprint worked yesterday but now asks for the PIN | Android requires the primary credential after a reboot or security event | Use the PIN or password; biometrics cannot override that requirement |
| Recovery keys do not open the menu | Variant-specific timing or software differences | Check the manual for the recorded model instead of trying random combinations |
| The phone starts but another SIM still fails | Network lock, not a screen lock | Contact the original carrier for country-specific eligibility |
| A reset appears to have removed files | Those files were stored locally without a backup | Check every existing cloud, computer, and removable-card backup; data deleted by the reset cannot be recovered according to Samsung’s regional guidance |
Quick decision checklist
- Can you unlock with a fingerprint or face? If yes, back up important data immediately.
- Is the problem a PIN, pattern, or password, rather than a SIM message?
- Did you previously enable and sign in to Samsung Find My Mobile?
- Have you checked backups and written down the Samsung and Google account credentials?
- Have you confirmed the exact A20 model and Android version before using recovery keys?
- If the issue is a different carrier’s SIM, have you contacted the original carrier in the country of sale?
The safest order is therefore: identify the lock, restart once if the phone may be temporarily stuck, use biometric access and Samsung’s remote option when genuinely available, and choose a model-specific factory reset only after accepting its data consequences. Treat carrier unlocking as a separate carrier-controlled process.
