That identification is unofficial, and one film appearance is not evidence that the tool is becoming Hollywood’s favourite accessory. Still, the reported choice puts a notably substantial piece of practical gear on screen.
Which Leatherman does Ryan Gosling use in Project Hail Mary?
T3 reported on March 30, 2026, that viewers had identified the tool as a Surge, while describing the identification as unofficial. The Gadgeteer later reported that Leatherman sent several models to the film’s props department and that the Surge was selected. That is secondary reporting, not confirmation from the studio or Leatherman; no verbatim statement from a named representative establishing the choice is available in the cited coverage.

So the careful answer is: the multi-tool is reported to be a Leatherman Surge, but the exact model has not been officially confirmed in the cited sources. T3’s suggestion that the production chose the tool for practical reasons is the journalist’s inference, not a statement from the filmmakers or the company.

Why the Hollywood framing needs a caveat
The Surge’s appearance is a useful contrast with the luxury watches often highlighted in celebrity coverage. For example, GQ’s January 2026 reporting covered actor Colman Domingo’s relationship with Omega and his awards-season watch appearances. That context does not show that actors are replacing Rolex or Omega with multi-tools, or that Leatherman has become a celebrity or red-carpet trend.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The cited coverage establishes a reported appearance in one film, not a wider Hollywood pattern. It provides no figure measuring how often Leatherman tools are used by actors or productions. The most defensible story is the Surge’s on-screen moment—not a change in celebrity accessory habits.

Is the Surge a good fit for everyday carry?
The main trade-off is straightforward: a broad tool set and replaceable components come in a 12.5 oz package. That weight may be worthwhile for someone who expects to use the pliers, cutters, blades, saw, or file; it may be excessive for someone who mainly wants a light pocket tool. The closed length of 4.5 inches and the separately sold sheath also matter when deciding how to carry it.

- Check before buying: the current US price and availability, whether the included configuration suits your needs, and the cost and fit of a sheath if you want one.
The listed specifications make it possible to judge the Surge on its own, but they do not establish that it is better than a particular alternative. A meaningful comparison should weigh tool selection, dimensions, weight, replaceable parts, and current price together; the cited material does not provide an independently tested head-to-head comparison.
