Forget AI: iOS 18 Finally Lets You Leave Blank Spaces on the Home Screen

iOS 18’s most useful Home Screen change has little to do with Apple Intelligence: you can place apps and widgets in any open grid position, leaving deliberate blank space instead of forcing every icon into the next slot. You can frame a person in a wallpaper, keep a widget prominent, or build a sparse first page—but icons still snap to Apple’s grid and cannot be positioned freely at pixel level.

Apple introduced this feature in iOS 18, which is no longer the newest iOS generation in 2026. The instructions and labels below describe the iOS 18 interface; later releases may rename or relocate controls.

What iOS 18 actually changed

The headline feature is flexible placement. Apps and widgets can occupy open positions on a Home Screen page rather than automatically filling the first available cell. That makes blank areas possible for the first time in Apple’s standard layout system.

Apple announced the change as part of iOS 18’s Home Screen updates: Apple’s iOS 18 announcement describes arranging apps and widgets around wallpaper. Three related controls are easy to confuse, but they solve different problems:

  • Size: enlarges icons and removes the app names underneath them.

These are native controls. You do not need a paid customization app, jailbreak or Shortcuts-based replacement icons for the basic effect.

How to leave blank spaces between apps

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
  2. Touch and hold the app or widget you want to move.
  3. Drag it to the open grid position you want.
  4. Release it, then tap Done.

To create a gap, first move the surrounding apps away from the area you want to keep clear. To move an item to another page, continue holding it and drag it toward the left or right edge; the exact edge animation can vary by iOS release, so check the behavior on the version installed on your phone.

It is flexible, not fully freeform

“Put icons anywhere” is a convenient shorthand, not a literal description. Every app and widget still occupies one or more positions in Apple’s underlying grid. Icons cannot overlap, sit at fractional coordinates or float between grid cells. A large widget can consume several cells and displace multiple apps.

The practical result is flexible grid placement: you can leave an empty column, put a few controls below a widget, or keep the center of a photograph unobstructed, but you cannot design a freeform canvas like a graphics app. MacRumors’ Home Screen guide documents the same grid limitation.

How to change icon and widget appearance

  1. Touch and hold the Home Screen background until the icons jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap Customize.
  4. Choose an appearance such as Light, Dark, Auto where available, Tinted or Clear where that control is offered in your iOS 18 version.
  5. For Tinted, adjust the color and saturation sliders. Apple’s guide also describes using the eyedropper to sample a color from the wallpaper.
  6. Use the size control to switch between the standard and larger icon presentation, then tap outside the panel and Done.

Apple’s step-by-step documentation is in Customize apps and widgets on the iPhone Home Screen. Appearance treatment applies to widgets as well as icons; Apple’s developer guidance covers light, dark, clear and tinted widget appearances in its Widgets Human Interface Guidelines.

What “large icons” really does

The large setting is not simply a zoom slider. Apple removes the names beneath the icons, giving the page a cleaner, more poster-like appearance. That can make a minimalist layout work better, but unfamiliar apps become harder to identify at a glance. Switching back to the smaller setting restores labels.

Will every app look equally good when tinted or dark?

No. iOS applies a system-level treatment, but the visual result depends on the app’s supplied icon assets and the platform version. Apple’s App icons Human Interface Guidelines describes default, dark, clear and tinted appearances that developers can support. Third-party icons may therefore look less consistent, overly muted or awkward compared with Apple’s own icons.

Tinting also changes widgets. It is a coordinated Home Screen style, not a guarantee that every individual icon will become a perfectly matching monochrome graphic.

Layouts that make the feature useful

Keep a wallpaper subject visible

For a portrait, pet or landscape with a clear focal point, leave the grid cells over that subject empty and arrange apps along the opposite side or lower rows. The value is functional as well as decorative: the wallpaper remains readable without resorting to a custom icon pack.

Build a widget-centered page

Place a medium or large widget in the area where you want attention, then position only the controls you use with it around the remaining cells. Remember that the widget’s footprint determines which grid positions remain available.

Create a minimalist first page

Keep only essential apps on page one and leave the rest in the App Library or on later pages. Large icons can remove labels for an especially sparse look, but that trades visual simplicity for slower recognition.

Make one-handed access easier

Move frequently used apps into the lower rows while leaving unused cells above. This preserves the familiar grid while putting the controls you reach most often in a more comfortable thumb area.

Coordinate a dark or tinted wallpaper

Choose Dark or Tinted from the Customize panel and tune the color and saturation rather than expecting every app to match perfectly. A layout designed around one wallpaper may need adjustment when you change the image.

Trade-offs to consider before rearranging everything

  • Findability: decorative gaps and a sparse page can make muscle-memory searches less reliable.
  • Labels: large icons remove names, which is inconvenient for infrequently used apps.
  • Contrast: dark or tinted treatments can reduce the visual distinction between neighboring apps.
  • Maintenance: changing icon size, adding a large widget or replacing the wallpaper can force a redesign.
  • Navigation: keeping fewer apps on the first page may mean more swipes or more use of the App Library.

Fixes when the layout goes wrong

An app disappeared from the Home Screen

Open the App Library, find the app, touch and hold it, then choose the option to add it back to the Home Screen. Moving an icon during editing does not uninstall the app.

A widget blocks the arrangement

Temporarily remove or resize the widget, arrange the apps, and add the widget again. Its size determines how many grid cells it occupies.

Edit or Customize is missing

Start the gesture on a blank area of the Home Screen, not by holding an individual app. The app context menu and the Home Screen editing controls are different. If necessary, tap away and repeat the blank-area hold.

  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.

The page is too confusing

Return to the Customize panel, choose Light or Auto, and select the smaller icon setting to restore labels and stronger visual separation.

Does this require Apple Intelligence?

No. Home Screen placement, icon appearance and icon sizing are ordinary iOS 18 customization features. They arrived in the same major release as Apple Intelligence announcements, but they do not depend on an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone or an AI service.

Who benefits most?

This is a meaningful upgrade for people who care about wallpaper composition, want a minimalist first page, prefer a native alternative to Shortcuts icon theming, or need frequently used controls in a particular part of the screen. It is less compelling if you depend on a tightly packed, label-heavy layout and do not want to relearn where apps are.

Apple’s later software documentation, including its iOS 26 feature overview, makes clear that iOS 18 should be treated as the release that introduced this capability—not as the current iOS generation in 2026.

The Bottom Line

iOS 18 removes the old requirement that every Home Screen item fill the next available slot. You can leave blank grid spaces, arrange apps and widgets around a wallpaper subject, and apply native dark, tinted or label-free styles. It is a substantial quality-of-life improvement, but the grid remains: this is flexible placement, not a completely freeform canvas.
