ChatGPT’s Sketch feature lets you draw directly in the chat and use that rough drawing as a visual guide for an AI-generated image. Type @Sketch, draw the composition, confirm it, and add text describing the subject, colors, style, lighting and materials. The result combines visual placement from the sketch with the descriptive control of a normal prompt.
What ChatGPT Sketch does
OpenAI describes Sketch as “a new feature which lets you draw right in ChatGPT and use it as a visual guide.” Instead of explaining every spatial relationship in a long paragraph, you can show the approximate arrangement first. A rough room plan, clothing outline, product layout or mascot pose gives the image generator a reference for position, scale and framing.

The sketch is not the finished artwork and does not replace written instructions. It communicates the broad visual structure; your text supplies the attributes that are difficult to draw quickly, including color palette, rendering style, lighting, texture, materials, mood and camera direction.
How to use Sketch on a phone
- Open the ChatGPT mobile app. In the message box, type
@and choose Sketch from the tool list. - Draw the idea. Use simple lines and shapes to indicate the important objects and their positions. The mobile canvas includes color selection, an eraser and undo for correcting strokes.
- Confirm the drawing. Tap the checkmark when the rough guide is ready.
- Add a text prompt. State what the drawing should become, along with colors, style, lighting, materials, viewpoint and any details that matter.
- Send the request. ChatGPT generates an image using both the sketch and the written description.
OpenAI’s example turns a simple house drawing into “a watercolor painting of a red house surrounded by trees.” The same workflow can preserve a layout while changing the visual treatment completely.

A useful rule is to draw only the relationships that would be cumbersome to explain. A few boxes can establish a product-photo arrangement; the prompt can then request a clean studio image, exact product colors and soft directional lighting. A quick room plan can show where the sofa, windows and table belong, while the text asks for a warm Scandinavian interior and a particular camera angle.

Product photography
Sketch three boxes to show the positions of a hero product and two supporting objects. Ask for a clean studio photograph with specified colors, a pale background and controlled three-point lighting.

Characters and mascots
Doodle the pose and the direction the character faces. Then specify the character’s features and ask for a polished children’s-book illustration, comic panel or another chosen treatment.
Why a sketch can make prompting faster
A paragraph can describe a layout, but it must spell out relationships such as “the smaller object sits behind and to the right of the larger one.” A drawing communicates those relationships at a glance. This is a practical advantage inferred from Sketch’s visual-guide workflow, not a published accuracy or speed benchmark. OpenAI has not released Sketch-specific adoption, accuracy or performance statistics.

Text remains the better tool for fine detail. If the exact fabric, brand-neutral color, time of day, surface finish or illustration technique matters, write it explicitly. The strongest workflow is therefore visual-plus-text rather than sketch-only prompting.
Editing results and handling imprecise selections
After an image is generated, continue the conversation to request changes instead of starting over. You can ask for a different palette, a revised object, altered lighting or a new background while keeping the overall idea.

OpenAI’s Help Center cautions that editor highlights are not always precise and that an edit can extend beyond the selected area. Review every revised image, especially around boundaries and nearby objects. If an edit changes too much, describe the intended boundary in the next message and ask ChatGPT to restore the unaffected elements.
Availability and device differences
OpenAI says Images 2.5, the image-generation system associated with this announcement, is available to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex users on desktop, mobile and the web. The detailed freehand controls described above—color selection, erasing, undo and the confirmation checkmark—are documented for the ChatGPT mobile app. The exact tool menu and controls may therefore differ on other clients.
For finer control on a touchscreen, a capacitive stylus pen can make short lines and outlines easier to place, but it is optional; the feature is designed to work with ordinary touch input.

Bottom line for creators
Sketch is most useful when the arrangement matters as much as the subject: rooms, outfits, posters, product shots and posed characters. Draw the layout simply, confirm it, and use the written prompt for everything the sketch cannot express precisely. Treat the first result as a starting point, inspect edits for spillover, and refine the image conversationally.
